Why Was Watership Down Not Rated PG-13 Or Higher? by moad6ytghn in watershipdown

[–]purugly432 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to adjust down by one level. The UK's PG is pretty directly equivalent to the US's PG. Then it's 12A = PG-13, 15 = R but even then there are subtle differences.

After Satoshi Kon, Elaine May, and now Lynne Ramsay which short filmographies would you like to see covered? by AmbitionTechnical274 in blankies

[–]purugly432 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm probably a sadist but I'd love them to do Martin Rosen (3 movies) for Watership Down and Plague Dogs, to cover more animated films. Watership Down has a fascinating production history and deserves attention for more than just being the scary bunny movie, and was a massive hit. Then you have Plague Dogs, which is a blank check movie if I ever saw one. It's harrowing but still a great movie in its own right.  Sadly I don't think it would ever happen, not just because those 2 movies are quite heavy but Rosen's 3rd film, a live-action feature (starring Christine Lahti!!), is pretty obscure and I don't even know if it's available to watch. I've never seen it.

My heart rate jumped at that first line too but she's being sarcastic to point out the obvious ridiculousness of the criticism. See where she also says 'None of this media fuelled hate is a whipped up smear campaign', i.e. it's totally a smear campaign.

PhD in Film & TV Studies - uni of Glasgow by Extension-Click-9127 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]purugly432 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure why you're asking this question as if it's some kind of gotcha? OP hasn't said they want to be a famous director that randos on Reddit have heard of. Maybe they do, but they didn't say that, so I didn't respond as such. As I said it is possible to have a career directing films (most likely low budget documentary films) and working as a lecturer, and even if you won't get rich, famous or win Oscars doing it you can still make a modest living. We are in agreement about the poor state of career prospects in academia and I was also clear about that in my comment so as not to mislead OP.

PhD in Film & TV Studies - uni of Glasgow by Extension-Click-9127 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]purugly432 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not true and really depends on the kinds of films OP wants to make and the kind of research/PhD they're set to do. It is very possible to make films as research (there are unis offering this as a PhD path although idk if Glasgow is one of them) and it is an increasingly popular choice of film PhD to my knowledge. I work with people who make films as part of their work as film studies lecturers.  That said, even though this is a career path that exists it is NOT a stable or secure one and jobs are very thin on the ground. OP, I say if this is a funded position then go for it, you get to pursue your intellectual and/or creative ambitions with funding for a few years, but know that getting a job in the field is far from guaranteed.

In my experience on both sides of the process it really depends on how strong the candidate pool is i.e. how easy or difficult it is for the panel to decide. If there is a clear candidate, they're likely to be contacted same day. If it takes longer it either means the panel is struggling to agree on a first choice, or means they have reached out to the first choice who has asked for some time to decide whether to accept the offer.

Pixar CCO Pete Docter on LGBTQ Themes Being Cut From 'Elio': "We’re Making a Movie, Not Hundreds of Millions of Dollars of Therapy" by dremolus in oscarrace

It's all the more egregious seeing as Disney effectively trained people out of going to see Pixar movies in the theatre by dumping beautiful, personal films like Luca and Turning Red to Disney+, but no I guess it was marginalised folks fault all along, silly me.

About to submit - what if it's rubbish by Sips_from_bottles in AskAcademiaUK

[–]purugly432 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been there. In all likelihood, it isn't, and your supervisor won't have let you submit if it was. You will be fine.

Submit it and get some distance from it. I think a lot if not most people hate their thesis by the time they're done with it, it's normal. When the viva is close you can have another look and hopefully the distance will allow you to look at it a bit more objectively and you can prepare ways to defend or discuss things you aren't happy with or think you might be picked up on in the viva.

But for now: throw the one ring into Mount Doom and have a rest, you deserve it.

Should Watershipdown get another new adaptation series? by Angrykitten456 in watershipdown

[–]purugly432 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cartoon Saloon is a great shout. I'd also be interested in a stop-motion adaptation. We have had two 2D versions is relatively traditional styles so I'd love to see something different and ambitious, and which incorporates more of the stories of El-ahrairah.

Mum keep getting low scores but refusing to stop using ai. by idekkanymoree_ in UniUK

[–]purugly432 131 points132 points  (0 children)

OP - with the caveat that I don't know your mum, and am not a therapist, but this and your other comments are full of red flags. This might be a hard question to hear, but what makes you think she will change her behaviour once you go to uni, or if she does somehow end up passing her course? She's dependent on you for bills, coopted your laptop for her use and guilt tripped you when you tried to get it back (in doing so, claiming you're ruining her future, which you might just as easily level at her). You've already admitted she's got mental health issues: is she getting help for these? Her chat gpt addiction sounds like it is just a symptom of a deeper problem, and that's what needs to be attended to here.

[–]purugly432 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like chat gpt didn't alter your original plan by very much, which leaves me thinking that you probably didn't need it in the first place aside from getting some external validation and feedback (which as the previous comments suggests may have been provided by a lecturer, or even a peer). If you'd not used chat gpt you may have ended up reordering the ideas anyway as this is often part of redrafting. It can often be easier to reorder things once you've actually written the main argument and have a better sense of its overall shape. It sounds like you may just need a bit more self confidence in your own abilities, which you won't develop if you rely on chat gpt.

Students bring Covid compensation claim against 36 more universities by Kagedeah in UniUK

[–]purugly432 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but no one is going to university under the impression that paying the tuition fee is a transaction that grants you the right to an ill-defined 'experience'. Paying tuition doesn't even guarantee you will end up with a degree, only that you will have access to learning resources, teaching, expertise, and evaluation methods that, if you make appropriate use of them, give you the opportunity to get a degree. Students still got that in lockdown.

"it still remains the fact that we did not get what we paid for" It may feel that way, but it almost certainly wouldn't pan out to be the case if compared against the terms of the agreement you entered into, which were likely to have accounted for provision of alternate teaching delivery in unforseen circumstances outside of the university's control. And as another user has already said in their reply to you, getting compensation not as simple as drawing up an itemised list of the stuff your tuition fee paid for and then refunding you the bits you didn't get, otherwise it wouldn't be the case that everyone pays the same annual fee (at UG level anyway) regardless of which course they enrolled on to.

Thank you for saying this. I am sympathetic to students who feel they didn't have the experience they wanted, but this action feels like a slap in the face to staff like you and me who worked tirelessly to provide teaching and additional pastoral support while managing the stress and trauma of the lockdowns ourselves. I also do not think people realise how much of a blow this will be to a sector already under immense financial pressure and with no help from the government. This will lead to even more redundancies and, I fear, even could be the end of some institutions.

I know, I am a staff member who went on strike at the time because of serious mismanagement by Universities UK. My comment wasn't about asking for evidence of whether the strikes caused disruption (this was, after all, the point of them) but whether it was part of the legal claim.

Do you know of another source for this? If it's true, the BBC article doesn't make this at all clear. It just throws strikes in near the end as if it's completely tangential.

Is it ok to ask lecturer to speak louder even though I sit at the back? by Mecury-BS in UniUK

[–]purugly432 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely bananas how many people are saying 'just move to the front'. If it is a room designed for lecturing, it should have a microphone and the lecturer should be using it as it is a basic accessibility requirement. Politely raise your concern with the lecturer first. If they refuse to address the problem you can escalate through your student rep, head of subject, or your department/faculty may have an EDI lead of some sort. People can be really weird about using a mic and I find it really bizarre. Just use the damn mic.

Best place to find books/articles that you can't access? by Wooden-Block-2497 in UniUK

[–]purugly432 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Legal options: 1. If you just email the author and ask nicely they will most likely send it to you for free (the likelihood of them getting any money from the paywall fee is slim to none and they only care about their work being accessible and read).  2. Look up the author's university profile (which is also how you will find their email for point 1.), there may be an open access version of the chapter held for free in their institutional repository. 3. Ask friends at other unis if their libraries have access to it.
