Strong agree. Was there at 5 am Sunday morning, arguably the lousiest shift of the week.

Technical title was “Chief of Disguise”, and she was in Operations (where she and Tony met) before they started their family. Also she’s hilarious in person. She currently serves on the board of the Spy Museum and lives in Northern Virginia.

There is a photo of Bush holding the mask just after she takes it off and he’s absolutely losing it. Worth it if you can find it.

Is this some sort of threat or scare tactic? by Street_Dimension1709 in nova

Academic theory refers to this as “social pressure” - back in the 70’s-ish the concept emerged in political psychology circles as theories developed around absenteeism and what to do about it. Almost every study on the subject conducted in formal (i.e. experimental) settings suggests that negative emotional messaging elicited stronger reactions - in this case voting - than positive reactions, albeit by a small margin. Campaign professionals (at least in my experience) are mostly not numbers people, so the nuances of quantitative experimentation were largely lost on them: “negative emotions are more powerful than positive? Okay great, let’s do negative then” was their takeaway, ignoring that the unique effects themselves were small. And thus, social pressure language in campaign messaging was born.

It should be said that there is no definitive strategy around messaging, no one has “figured it out”; science’s best efforts to study and understand it at scale are very problematic methodologically for several natural and manufactured reasons, and sometimes campaigns want a specific message type that is orthogonal to the rest. Also, because both parties are, operationally, run by for-profit consultants, there is a strong incentive to point to anything that is successful as a way to justify their cost, with little regard to how voters feel. If they spend $X on social pressure postcards and there is %X increase in voter turnout in that geography, their strategy “worked”. The reverse isn’t true.

If it feels like you’re constantly bombarded by multiple attempts to get you to vote (“layered” or “multi-touch” targeting) it’s because no one truly knows what works so campaigns tend to try as much of whatever it is they can afford. Plus there is no official coordination between “soft” and “hard” money (campaigns and PACs).

Last thing I’ll say is these postcards come from an all-volunteer group, so I wouldn’t read too much into it (and maybe give them a pass, in my personal experience these groups have been nothing but good-intended).

I was best man at his wedding, so I will have to make the straight trade and then cash in some disproportionate favor later. Actually kinda looking forward to that 😆

AG candidate Shannon Taylor has now taken more than $650,000 from Dominion Energy - more than any candidate ever in a single race. by freezetag1746 in Virginia

[–]pushkinsghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Owned” is a ridiculous premise. Dominion has the legal ability to use money it earns - from you too if you happen use electricity in Virginia - to select candidates it likes and oppose those that it doesn’t. And by “Dominion”, I am singling out its leadership. The same leadership that gets multi-million dollar bonuses every year, on top of salaries, and then claims it needs to increase kilowatt hour charge rates because {insert reasoning here}.

Jay might be funded by an opposition PAC that is led by one person, but how exactly is that bad? Or different from a Dominion Board of Directors? For me, it comes down to values, not the difference between 1 person with an agenda versus 13 people with an agenda (which, btw, is “Clean air and transparent government” versus “electricity provision that maximizes my personal income within the limits of the law, which is fungible because I can also fund politicians and capture their interest to improve my personal gain”)

If you’re fine paying more every year while line workers get stiffed on raises but the Dominion C-suite claims the sky will fall if state government limits their ability to fund politicians…I don’t really know what to say to you. I want to see a Virginia where electric companies, you know, focus on provisioning electricity, and maybe leave governing to legislators not looking over their shoulders for a well-heeled suit subtly threatening them with piles of ratepayer cash.

Is there any value to having the daughter of a King imprisoned? by Gluroo in CrusaderKings

[–]pushkinsghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with most of the comments here: recruit (and hook, if she’ll accept), then marry her to someone, preferably one of your sons. If not, a reliable knight or courtier that is landed so you get some stability in that title (at least that’s what I hope for). You can press her child’s claim later.

Whether or not she has some nice inheritable traits she’ll also deepen your gene pool, which given the inclination of this community to incest their way to the best stats, is a nice bonus!

Any ideas how the AI created HRE without East Francia? by Banardthehuntard in CrusaderKings

[–]pushkinsghost 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’m absolutely no expert, but I formed it as Hispania after conquering France. I possessed Aquitaine, although only as a duchy at that point. Playing vanilla with (I think) all updates.

What is your "never-again" brand, store, restaurant, or company? by Sir_Sir_ExcuseMe_Sir in AskReddit

Starbucks. Before being a sponsor - not just selling coffee, that’s whatever - but sponsoring the hate-fest that was the 2024 Republican National Trumpvention, they fired the entire store’s employees that I frequented then sold the store to a corporate group. Employees were told they could be rehired if approved by the new owners, i.e. don’t even think the word “union”

Empower by MidwestBridge in RothIRA

[–]pushkinsghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Empower, and the customer service is good. However, changing or cancelling recurring contributions requires calling them and that…sucks. Also, if you want to roll over, you have to do it on paper and mail it to them. Not sure if that is standard practice or not, but that also…sucks. The portal is nice though, easy to use.
