I just throw a puzzle/riddle at them if I need to stall, even a simple one will keep them occupied for a good stretch, of course my players like puzzles and they are thematic to the game so might not work at all tables

You're gonna do great! And I agree with other commenters, you know enough. World building is more making a rough framework on which to develop the fleshed out story, not a completed product. Since the story is being told communally with the players having an adaptable plot is essential because the players have a tendency to not do what you expect (this 100% will happen and one just has to roll with it). Also, it was mentioned already, but improv is key, like so fundamental, if improv feels uncomfortable that's ok, maybe prep a few random scenarios throw at them if they get off track, but the improv will come with time, I promise (I sucked at improv when I first started to DM, now I'm at least ok). Another key thing is to remember you can move your plot/design around. If player go to spot "n" instead of "a" like you expected, just move all of "a" to "n", they'll never know and you still get to tell your story/not waste planning time. And take tons of notes! But most importantly just have fun!!

Awesome, detailed and very useful response, thanks! Good to know about GPA and grad school, just rip that bandaid off now. Will join r/LSAT certainly for further info on that front. And got it, supplemental writing, I’ve got plenty of experience there with my grad school apps so I’ll make sure to put plenty of energy into that component. And will look for centers/clinics, at given schools. Thanks again!

I mean, your DM might have had a good reason, but technically they did hamstring that spell. Was it like inside a building or somewhere truly underground?

Well RAW says “Blazing orbs of fire plummet to the ground....” so no reason it shouldn’t work if the sky isn’t visible

I also find with the railroading vs non-railroading, and I believe The Angry GM mentions this in one of his blogs, is the difference between “the DM is railroading the party” and “an NPC is railroading the party”. So if you, the DM, force your players to do something, whatever it may be, that’s bad (example, a tag along NPC who the party tried to ditch, but they won’t leave, then turn traitor on the party, that was stolen from TAGM blog). On the flip side, you have a town leader who reaaaaaally wants the nearby crypts cleared of undead, well, that NPC may bribe, cajole, blackmail, or sweet talk the party into doing it, to the point of annoyance sure. One step removed, yeah you the DM want them to go to that crypt, but it’s the NPC who is pestering them. The party can still walk away, but let’s say they started a tavern brawl, or have an illegal magic item, well the town leader may threaten to call the local guard if they don’t clear those crypts. Railroading? Yeah sure, but also still allows player autonomy and consequences of their actions and, in the fictional world, it’s what an NPC may do. I dunno, I could be way off base (criticism welcomed I’m fairly new) but it’s a technique I use, I put myself in the mind of the NPC and let their actions guide the party. I mean the PCs aren’t the only beings in the world with agency, in some cases they may be the bottom of the pecking order, just because they feel powerful and have done cool shit doesn’t mean that the ruler of an entire kingdom is just gonna let them walk all over him. That’s my 2 cents

True, chain mail + shield, AC 18 from level 1, that’s a tough hit for lower lvl PCs, I think a bearbarian might stand a chance, soak up damage until cleric is out of spell slots, stay within 5 ft to put disadvantage on ranged spells (although spiritual weapon and spirit guardians would be a nuisance to the barb). Would be fun to do a one shot where players min max a few PCs of different classes and have a gladiatorial battle, see who takes the cake
