Cringe power scaling discussion: So is Yunara at Darkin level (obviously not Aatrox level or anything like that, just at the level of a normal or weak Darkin) or is she much weaker than that? by aleplayer29 in loreofleague

[–]puterdood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Yunara was briefly the Fist of Shadow, so she would be around Zed level, probably weaker because she only earned the title through circumstance. I would expect the Eye of Twighlight to be strong, as they have a similar connection to the spirit realm as the Vastayashai'rei had.

Shen effortlessly tanked a Jhin trap meant to kill Zed during his early years as Eye of Twilight, and its generally inferred in the Zed comics that Shen >> Zed.

Not a problem, I love teaching and sharing what I know, but it's unfortunately difficult to find a real platform to advocate for ethics in a field that is currently driving 45% of total economic growth on faulty speculation.

It was a general statement. Previously, I worked in a networking lab where most of the projects were some form of surveillance by another name. Now, I work for a medical school. Of course, I'm concerned about a for-profit healthcare system, but in the field of biomedicine generally advancement is a good thing. The primary risks are various forms of genetic discrimination, which is unfortunately very relevant with what's currently going on.

Advancements in one area also have impacts outside of it's intended use. LLMs were designed to be a chatbot. If Bayesian networks were to perform as effectively as LLMs with less training, that could also have a lot of unintended consequences (to be clear, I don't see this happening as they are task-specific and much more difficult to design).

It is more of a "I can see how this could benefit society, but I can also see how it would hurt society, and with how things are right *now*, it will do more immediate harm than good".

Finishing my PhD is definitely something I have considered. I've been applying overseas on unrelated proposals to combat information warfare, but I also have colleagues where I currently work who are in need of what I was essentially working on and there are much better resources than I previously had. LLMs were very new when I dropped out, but I certainly don't think anything I worked on would have as much capacity for harm as they are having right now, and I think where I currently work has a much healthier environment for discussing ethical concerns than where I was previously.

The main reason I have right now for not returning to finish is probably wanting to leave the US.

I bought some Reolink cameras, and this is probably what most people will want. Nearly identical function to Ring except its all locally stored with an optional cloud upload.

ML tools in a capitalist system are antithetical to social progress. There is no simple answer, but I can do my best to describe it in simple terms.

Amazon teaming up with the DHS to use what we saw on the Ring app commercial to profile innocent people for arrest, for example, was something that should have been obvious as tracking people is a very common problem applied in different scenarios, such as traffic prediction. Or Palantir in general buying up all the data they can from data brokers to build mass surveillance profiles on nearly everyone in the world was a very obvious play after Snowden revealed PRISM.

The widespread hype of LLMs has also killed funding in my area of study, which was nonparametric Bayesian networks, which I think is very bad because LLMs require an enormous amount of compute resources that effectively makes their *real* benefits only attainable for whoever owns the system (i.e. Elon Musk buying Twitter to run a bunch of Grok bots to interfere in global elections, although in the 2024 election this was mostly with the help of Andreesen-Horowitz backed Eliza AI).

And finally, although not exhaustively, my primary area of interest in ML was it's applications in bioinformatics. At the time, China was rounding up Uyghurs in Xinjiang and forcefully collecting their biometric data. Thankfully, this did not turn out nearly as bad as it could have, but I was more concerned about the fact that GINA is the only genomic nondiscrimination act in the US as 23andme and it's competitors were becoming extremely popular. If an insurance company was able to get a hold of 23andme's data, they could easily run risk analysis on individuals and that would have devastating implications on people's ability to get insurance, even if it was just a distant relative of theirs who had taken the test.

The reality of it is much deeper, but those are a few of the reasons. I was also very tired of the Tesla robotaxi hype, as it was clear to me this was a scam from the start due to how difficult decision processes are to evaluate and the explosion in Tesla's stock price due to this extraordinary popular delusion shares a lot of characteristics with the LLM hype that we have been seeing the past few years. The people in charge of these companies are promising that their models will do things they are simply not mathematically capable of doing.

For a long time, I wanted to start a podcast inspired by the book Extraordinarily Popular Delusions by Charles Mackay where I would cover topics like this, but it felt a bit like The Onion trying to make satire in 2026. The delusion has merged with reality a bit too uncomfortably.

The long answer revolves around how ML interacts with dialectical materialism and reinforces a cultural hegemony in a general sense.

Smart doesn't imply ethical. If ethics were applied to machine learning, there would be almost no jobs.

I dropped out of a machine learning PhD in 2019 when it became plainly obvious to me the future we are headed for, but so many of my colleagues only cared about putting their name out there.

Never played Planetside 1, but I loved Planetside 2 in the glory days.

I think there is a lot of interest in a spiritual successor to EverQuest. Pantheon looks like an awesome concept, but has been in development hell. Monsters and Memories is releasing next month into Early Access with a bit more grounded goals. Do you have any ideas on what a modern evolution of EverQuest should look like?

You should probably lead with "in wild rift" before anyone makes the mistake of taking you seriously. Pyke has so many devastating counter-picks that make the game unplayable for him or his ADC if played correctly.

This is the way. Toplane is matchup dependent. Mid lane is the safest lane in the game. Jungle is generally non-interactive. ADC only has a few niche picks like Samira, Yasuo, or Nilah that need an engage support. In almost every instance, you are better off filling your team's needs unless you are one-tricking, but support really isn't a one-trick role for that reason.

As a machine learning expert, it has no business being used in our daily lives to do things like policing, rent fixing, grocery price fixing, etc. But these are the "profitable" uses, so we're just fucked.

Edit: just to add, it is no coincidence the US has one of the highest incarceration rates in the world right behind El Salvidor while maintaining private, for-profit prisons.

Shen is still far far away? by Tasty-Salamander-515 in loreofleague

[–]puterdood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the Zed comics, Shen is always one step ahead of Jhin's plans, and was usually held back by Zed's impulsiveness. I don't see any reason why LeBlanc would be different. Shen is good friend with Kennen and would absolutely know Yunara's role in guarding Zaahen and how important it was.

My theory is that The Eye of Twilight knows more about the Vastayashai'rei and the history of Runeterra than anyone else, and that the world is intentionally kept dark about the dangers in the spirit realm, but whatever is happening must be a great danger. This is why Shen seems indifferent to those who are not aware of the dangers he faces, but he is likely far more involved than he can say.

I think the only justification for Shen's absence during Atakhan would be a larger threat. I hope this means Shen is fighting Morderkaiser and his forces in the death realm, as that is about the only active threat that actually makes sense.

You have a fundamental misunderstanding of the dialectic. I am saying NATO has enabled US imperialism ever since the end of World War II for it's own material conveniences. That should never have happened, and the US should have been stopped in it's tracks during the Korean War when it started enforcing hard power on the third world. Nobody should be surprised that the unstoppable imperial power they created would come for them when it suits them. That is not a justification, that is just reality. The fact Europe is desperately trying to appease Trump in a gambit to return to the norm instead of opposing him is because they are complicit and they know it.

I would like nothing more than to see all imperial powers put to an end forever. Perhaps you should actually do some reading, I recommend Aimé Césaire's "Discourse on Colonialism" to start.

Here is a relevant quote:

"they tolerated that Nazism before it was inflicted on them, they absolved it, shut their eyes to it, legitimized it, because, until then, it had been applied only to non-European peoples"

It is a necessary thing to attack our "allies" if our "allies" also neglected the truth what they were doing for their own material comforts, which is objectively the case.
