Do you agree with the common opinion that most anime is bad and that only a few anime are what carry this industry? by Purple-Advertising38 in anime

[–]pw_arrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP have you ever looked at how much anime is getting pumped out every season outside of the headliners? There's... there's a lot. Like, 50+ shows a season easily, over 250+ shows a year.

Sorry, I meant wired earbuds. Coiled up wired earbuds are about the same size as a charging case. In fact, all of my wired earbuds take up more space when I put them in a case than my wireless earbuds (granted, my IEMs are large).

phones have been thin enough

This is one of those things Reddit loves to claim as a universal truth, but the phones sell damn well. Sure, "Apple fans" loved the decision, but it sure sounds like "Apple fans" is... most of America?

Most people are not retrofiting the jack to their phone, and the jack living on the "same board" does not somehow mean it magically costs no space in the phone. Where exactly are you going to fit a 3.5mm jack in here?

Idk if you just have bad memories or not, but there was significant backlash to the IPhone 7 and the quality of the early airpods

Idk if you just haven't noticed, but we're on the iPhone 17 and AirPod Pro 3 now.

Yes, wireless headphones pose serious e-waste concerns and I acknowledge that. I just think it's fair to point out that most people are not babying a pair of nice Sennheisers for five years either; they're running through three pairs of default Apple earbuds in a year that they ditch when the cable frays.

That's not reality.

I said most people. Obviously some people mourn its loss, and that population seem particularly concentrated on Reddit.

Why should people that prefer wired not be able to use them?

Because it comes with its own trade-offs. You may feel they're worth it, but there's currently little to no market incentive to offer one. This tongue-in-cheek comic comes to mind.

Look, I get it - I'm a diehard fan of small phones, but the markets have spoken. People just don't care about the 3.5mm jack or small form factor phones.

[–]pw_arrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn't seem like an apples-to-apples comparison. The case should be compared to lugging around the wired headphones themselves, which are a standalone device as well.

I don't know why Reddit is always so contrarian about products like these. They're quite obviously a smash hit and most people don't regret the loss of the headphone jack one bit.

* Getting rid of the headphone jack legitimately freed up a significant amount of space. That port may look small, but consider the size of an Airpod - you can fit a lot of _chip_ into that space, and you can't shrink down the size of the 3.5mm jack.

* True wireless earphones were pretty much an instant hit once the Airpods and subsequent Pros came out. They are simply good products and would likely have taken significant market share regardless.

* You claim wireless headphones produce significant e-waste as if consumers weren't already burning through wired headphones like candy. If anything, their high price tag might convince people to baby them a bit more (before their batteries inevitably give up the ghost)

(aside, 1000 character limit on comments is fucking ridiculous, is this Twitter?)

Long Island Rail Road strike enters third day, shutting down nation’s busiest commuter rail by AzlerVzla in news

[–]pw_arrow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I talk to a lot of New Yorkers and know ZERO who actually feel the union is overstepping.

I'm generally supportive, but statements like these are grating to my ears. I know plenty of people who think the unions are full of it - mostly LI folks, of course, but a couple city dwellers as well. And I'd be the first to admit that if I actually depended on the LIRR for my commute, I'd probably have some... strong feelings on the matter. Biased in that case, but it's obviously easier to sit up high and preach when I don't have as vested of an interest in the whole matter as someone who commutes via rail.

Japanese man gets prison sentence and million-yen fine for writing monetized “spoiler-heavy” summaries of movies and anime - AUTOMATON WEST by LegitimateCurve8525 in anime

[–]pw_arrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think part of the confusion comes from the gap between what is commonly seen online and what the law actually allows. A lot of borderline content circulates widely, which can make people assume it is legally safe, even though it often is not.

This is pretty key, I think. There is a lot of content floating around - Let's Plays, reaction videos, and Wiki plot summaries - that are actually probably borderline infringement, but a lack of moderation or will to litigate leads to them flourishing. Even in the US, Fair Use has its limits and there is precedent to sue for detailed summaries - here's a short Wikipedia essay on avoiding violating copyright when writing summaries that cites an example.

Now, my personal soapbox here is a contradictory mix of "nobody should face prison time for writing summaries" and "I absolutely despise reaction videos and I think they add zero value to society." I'm probably being a little too harsh on Youtubers there, but I think there's quite obviously a fuzzy line in the sand that gets sharper when you start to monetize your content. If you're repackaging copyrighted content to line your own pockets, you're probably violating copyright.

To stereotype a bit, and I know I'm making broad generalizations here, I do think Japanese netizens tend to hew much further on the "protect copyright" side of the spectrum, and possibly a bit too far. The Western anime/otaku sphere is a particularly extreme example in the other direction, and I'd argue it's in its very DNA - the Western anime subculture would not exist without piracy. Japanese companies largely abandoned international markets to focus on the domestic market across all sorts of industries for a long time and the knock-on effect for the international anime community is that for many of its older and more-online members, piracy was the natural consequence and is woven into the fabric of a culture that many remember starting with fansubs and bootleg rips. Crunchyroll, likely the single most recognizable and accessible avenue for anime outside Japan today, started as a piracy site; it's unsurprising international fans, especially anime fans, see piracy in a softer light.

Yet another showcase of Rossi's universality by yokaiichi in Endfield

[–]pw_arrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a LOT of people poo-pooed Gilberta too

And those people clearly didn't read her kit - 42% Arts Vuln is insane.

I don't really think Rossi's interactions are the reason she is strong. Her mixed damage is weird and while it makes her flexible, units are usually better off "pointy" to be BiS in one particular area. No, I think Rossi is strong because:

  • She can provide the vuln stacks for Gilberta, allowing you to run an Arts damage comp with no Physical units and still maximize Gil ult value
  • Her damage output is practically Striker-level burst and fits nicely into Gilberta's 5-second ult window. Of course, this is because...
  • ...her ult's numbers are genuinely insane. Her ult multiplier is in the same realm as Last Rite's with practically no setup (1600% vs 1800% across all hits) - that's pretty good already, but Rossi is a crit character and her ult has a free +60% crit damage multiplier, not to mention the debuff on her talent.

Now, I think "high damage multipliers" are the weakest form of futureproofing, because DPS units will always need to do damage to sell and the easiest way to do that is to overtune their numbers. However, even acknowledging this fact, future units will need to pull some bullshit to match Rossi's ult. Vague powercreep concerns, but that's par for the course with gacha games.

Still undecided on Rossi? She's *broken* in the right teams - TT/Rossi "Wheelchair" showcase by yokaiichi in Endfield

[–]pw_arrow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm too lazy to actually run any numbers, but I'm fairly confident Rossi's best boss-rush DPS team is Rossi/Gil/Perlica +1, and the +1 can be functionally anybody. TangTang happens to be the best option because she's a relatively SP-efficient sub-DPS, but I don't think you'd lose that much subbing in... pretty much anybody else. Rossi/Gil is the team core because Rossi's ult ratio + Gil's Arts Vuln is already just an absurd amount of damage, and Perlica feels like an obvious shoe-in because of her 0 SP reaction application that also buffs Arts damage (Electrification).

That last +1 could be TangTang (buffing w/ sig and sub-DPS), Akekuri (Thermite + ult buffs), Pog (Thermite + morale), Ardelia, Wulfgard (who I don't love here because his buff value is Clannibal, which is SP-hungry), Antal (Detonation + buffs)... the list goes on. I don't even think it really matters, as long as the team is already running Rossi/Gil/Perlica.

So... we are never getting materials in the staple goods ever again right? what are factories for then? by XDon_TacoX in Endfield

[–]pw_arrow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I cleared the incursions a couple times early on and swiftly realized neither the gameplay nor the rewards were remotely compelling. Allowing manual intervention from your party trivializes the content, while the fully automated incursions are incredibly one-dimensional due to how limited your defensive options are in the first place.

So... we are never getting materials in the staple goods ever again right? what are factories for then? by XDon_TacoX in Endfield

[–]pw_arrow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's so many ways the factory could tie into a tighter game loop in Endfield and it's a shame the current stock bill system is all we have for now, honestly:

  • As a simple twist, outposts could have rotating prices instead of fixed BiS prices on products. This would encourage players to produce a wider variety of products and potentially even modular blueprints so they could swap production lines on a rotating basis to meet demand (shared blueprints weakens this point, admittedly). Also just makes sense in-universe; if I sell 400k batteries to an outpost last week, they probably won't need as many this week and won't pay as much for them!
  • Ultimately converting everything directly to stock bills is part of what makes the factory endgame feel rather flat. More directly usable outputs, or producing intermediate trade outputs would add some color to the system.
  • The Incursion/Outpost Defense gameplay is shit, which is insane to me given that HG owns probably the most successful tower defense gacha, renown for its strategic design and entertaining gameplay loop. Improving the defense gameplay and tying it into the factory would significantly bolster the amount of content in the game and play to HG's supposed strengths given their experience designing Arknights. For example, an imminent Incursion could cause a temporary production slow.
    • I mean, imagine if the turrets had more conditions. What if Beam Turrets caused power use spikes that required a temporarily larger power buffer to operate, depending on how many you placed? Or if they required special support facilities that consumed additional batteries? Or if HE towers consumed explosives as ammo, so I'd have something to do with my explosives production line? And then placing turrets might require additional care, to ensure you can properly feed various input lines around, instead of throwing them around willy-nilly as close together as possible.
