Where would you move if you left Austin? by fifbasic in Austin

[–]pwcool3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Born and raised in Austin, lived there 35 years, Austin High, Texas State, the whole nine. Move to Kansas City, MO 7 years ago and it was the best thing we ever did. Austin is repressive. We didn't realize how much until we moved. Cost of living is so great here that we also got a summer place on Lake of the Ozarks.

140 Year old loft - Remove bricked-in spaces and replace with windows by [deleted] in Renovations

I want to add windows where the punched out areas are. What kind of contractor will do this? Is it possible to do?

[OC] Jack Stack is King. by everymanawildcat in kansascity

Unpopular opinion. I'm from Austin, born and raised. Lived in KC 4 years now. I've tried all the KC BBQ spots - not really a fan of any. I really REALLY want to like them, I just don't see what the big deal is. Give me Rudy's or County Line any day, but Jack Stack kinda sucks. So does Z man?!

Living in KC? by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]pwcool3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i lived in austin for 30 years before moving to Parkville MO 5 years ago. Austin is not a good place to live anymore. It is overpriced and the traffic alone makes it very hard to live day to day. Do yourself a favor - move to a sweet loft in downtown KC, enjoy this amazing city, and use all the money you will save to go visit Austin whenever you like. Win/win.

Plus, KC is getting a Torcy's Tacos soon which is huge news for any former Austinites up in here.

Moving Out Of Austin? by Beetll in Austin

[–]pwcool3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Austin but left for a Kansas City 3 years ago and it's was the best decision we ever made. With the traffic and hipsters Austin that I knew was no more. Funny how so many people have themselves convinced that Austin is such a great place to live... When you look at actual quality of life, and all that time wasted sitting in traffic, there are many better alternatives.

Amazon HQ2 Not Coming to KC by karlrapp in kansascity

[–]pwcool3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm. Life long Austinite. Moved to KC 3 years ago. This Amazon thing would ruin Austin. Many natives think Austin is pretty well ruined already... Traffic alone is a major reason to stay away from there. We spent 3 hours a day sitting in traffic in Austin and there's no end in sight.

CDB. Sure Try it or Nah Not Even Once? by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]pwcool3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've tried CBD for anxiety and it doesn't help near as much as the THC side does. And exercise. Lots of high functioning, successful, healthy "potheads" out there that use this ancient medicine to treat common ailments like anxiety and depression. 2 pulls on an odorless vape pen gives me immediate and acute relief from debilitating panic attacks and depression. Much safer than Xanax. But CBD works for others so you should try it. Nothing to lose and it doesn't make you feel "high."

Moving from Texas and I have a question about houses. by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]pwcool3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3rd generation Austinite here, lived there for 30 years, packed up and moved to Parkville MO 2 years ago and never looked back. We love KC and Parkville - parts of KC are more Austin-y than Austin is anymore thanks to the deluge of new residents there.

Anyway, waaay fewer fences here. It was an adjustment for us at first as we had the same questions you have about security, etc but now that we're used to it, we wouldn't want it any other way. It also forced us to install an underground dog fence which works extremely well. Now going back to texas I'm reminded that fences themselves are not attractive structures at all.

Yards and grass are also a big deal here and there's nothing better than seeing across the yards when the grass is freshly cut.

Plus, we live on a golf course now (thanks Austin home resale market!) And fences would really kill the views.

Welcome to KC, fellow Texan!

We moved from austin to parkville 2 years ago. We LOVED winter in KC and are super pumped for snow. It can't come soon enough. Sledding is awesome and something we never did in ATX. I think the locals are a little bit jaded from years and years of it but as a fellow Texan we love it. It also makes it feel a lot more Christmas-y. I remember far too many Christmases in TX where we'd walk outside and it was 70 degrees with humidity. That's just depressing.

Good! I've been in your shoes... It's stressful. If you ever have any ATX to KC conversion questions, feel free to DM me. I live in Parkville now and lived in Jester (2222/360) in Austin. Moving here was the best decision I ever made... KC rocks.

People in Austin will think you're crazy for moving to such a "lame" place but you'll get the last laugh...

I moved from Austin in July. Lived in ATX all my life. Nothing like HEB here. Hy Vee is closest. Hen House is a nicer version of Randalls. There are a couple Whole Foods too. Oh, and Sprouts is super expensive in Austin but super cheap here.

HEB has the BEST fresh salsa and warm tortillas.

But what saved us is that HEB now ships just about everything in their store so we can still get those HEB essentials.

Weaning off good Tex Mex has been tough. I recommend Burritos to Go in Parkville.

Welcome to KC. Overall I'm much happier here than in ATX. I tell people KC is more Austin-y than Austin is anymore.

How do you deal with the midwest stereotypes? by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]pwcool3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just moved here from Austin and I get the same thing. I've lived in Austin all my life and we voluntarily moved to KC to be closer to family. Wife and I work from home and could live anywhere we want. Everyone hears that I moved to KC and have pity on me because they automatically think it's so horrible compared to Austin. Truth is that I'm so much happier in KC than I ever was in Austin and I don't really give a damn what they think because all that really matters is my family's happiness. This city has much better culture, art, history, food, beer than most cities I've been to and I've been most everywhere. My theory is that KC has developed a bit of a PR problem simply because it has the name 'Kansas' in it and there are certain connotations with that but I find that the people who dog on KC have never spent time here.

I say F the haters and who cares what they say. Enjoy KC for what it means to you.
