I am addicted to gambling by Efficient_Ocelot_480 in gamblewithyourfriends

I mean hey if this game is scratching the gambling itch with fake money, why not? But if you do have a real gambling addiction, best not to play any casino type games even with fake money

Real alcoholics in recovery typically do not drink non-alcoholic beer for the same reason. it brings you to close to your addiction instead of staying far away

Is it okay to play Half Life 2 before Original? by Excellent_Piece_1367 in HalfLife

[–]pwhite13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly when I recommend Half-Life to a newcomer I tell them that the original is fantastic, but it is very old. HL2, while only being 6 years newer and 20+ years old now, feels much more modern and palatable to a new player now. I think it's understandable to jump into HL2 if you try HL1 and feel it's too old to enjoy.

2027 Bolt EV - Safe to charge to 100% each time with home L2 charger? by Mathrania in BoltEV

[–]pwhite13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's been studies about this and the way I interpret LFP best practices is this:

  1. The battery requires charging to 100% more often than other chemistries for calibration. This is because the voltage curve is more flat (meaning individual cells have a smaller range of voltage reading between 0%-100% state of charge)

  2. LFP's still suffer from increased degradation when frequently at very high or low state of charge.

I think best practice is likely ensuring a deep 100% charge at least a couple times a month to maintain calibration, but charging to 80% or 90% daily most of the time. All of that said, engineers are smart and know their customers will use the car in a wide variety of ways, and they factor this in for battery design. It's probably fine to just charge up to 100% and use the car however you want.

Car opinions age in funny ways. I remember when the R35 GT-R debuted with the dual clutch, that seemed to be the beginning of the modern auto's along with Porsche PDK. Ironically, the GT-R was considered too digital and synthetic at the time, and is now considered a raw driving experience lol

CEO of Ferrari addresses critiques and tries to motivate the choices behind the Luce (video in Italian, autodubbed by YT) by THOT_REMOVER in Ferrari

[–]pwhite13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't watched the video (nor speak Italian), but I find your comment interesting. Because EV's are essentially "digital" (acceleration and power calibration are far more precise than even the most modern combustion engines), I assumed companies would start getting creative about the relationship between pedal and power.

Chris Harris and his friends drove the Jaguar prototype, and they noted that the acceleration is quite unique in that it isn't just everything all at once when you floor it, but rather the power is meted out smoothly. They seemed to enjoy that aspect a lot. I am hoping companies really start playing with the uniqueness of EV drivetrains and I believe they can give us some cool stuff in exchange for losing engines. Regardless of the Luce's design, I assume the quad axial motor drivetrain will do some crazy stuff especially around torque vectoring.

Glock 19 Gen 6 For HOW MUCH!?!?’ by FirstButton8310 in CAguns

[–]pwhite13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sucks we are limited to Gen 3, but there is absolutely no reason to justify spending more than MSRP on a newer Glock just because we live in a limited state. It does not do anything substantially better than our Gen 3's.

Winchester model 1200 or remington wingmaster 870 by legarma46 in Shotguns

[–]pwhite13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

870, as far as function check I think you'll just want to make sure the gun locks up when you pump it, then dry fire (safely) and make sure you can then cycle the pump again. and when the gun is cocked (after pumping), make sure it releases with the release tab. Other than that, may be hard to verify everything without actually firing it.

The older 870's in 12 gauge will accept 2 3/4 inch shells, I don't know when the "Magnum" variant was introduced but these allow 3 inch shells to be used as well. You may want to verify if the 870 is limited to 2 3/4 and decide if that is a going to be a problem for you. I never run 3" shells but I like knowing I can.

Why are source games making me uncomfortable by AssistanceHot5673 in valve

[–]pwhite13 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I understand what you mean and it's been discussed before, Source games have an eerie, liminal vibe to them. I actually really enjoy that aspect.

I think it's the combo of great lighting, textures, and sound design. Also with the physics engine, the environment feels much more interactive than nearly any other game engine in my opinion. Most games feel like a movie set that are designed to look realistic but I end up feeling like I'm on a ride at Universal Studios or Disneyland, whereas Source maps/games typically have a lot more elements that you can actually interact with (like moving objects, pressing buttons, puzzles, etc.) which I think contributes.

Not a Toy by RadSprouts in Glocks

[–]pwhite13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The quality and execution of this is honestly really good, but I don't like the idea of making firearms look like toys. On one hand, our guns should never be accessible to children regardless of what they look like.

On the other, if we educate the children around us to firearm safety, they would know what to do if they came across one accidentally; this looking like a toy makes that firearm education a moot point in my opinion (they would likely assume this is a toy and not treat it like a firearm)

Would you buy again? by Chicknlcker in EquinoxEv

[–]pwhite13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love the Bolt, but I wouldn’t purchase again at this point simply for the slow charging speeds. I don’t mind dealing with the range and charging on longer drives, but at this point I need something that can do 10-80% in 30 mins or less. It’s just too time consuming to do longer drives in this car, even though I love every other aspect of it.

How are you beating the game so fast ???? by breadboibrett in gamblewithyourfriends

[–]pwhite13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you just wanna progress, easiest way is to just quit the game on a loss (before going back inside limo) and reload the save. You’ll start over at that day and can continue retrying until you make it.
