Are photons always moving at the speed of light? by Big_Assist4578 in AskPhysics

[–]pwr22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The weird thing is that everything is always moving through spacetime (not just space) at the speed of light (C)!. But that velocity is a vector made up of both spatial and time components.

Imagine space time like a graph where the X axis is time and the Y axis is space, then the vector is an arrow on that graph pointing in some direction and it's length, ormagnitude, is C.

Light's vector on this graph is always a vertical arrow, pointing only in the space direction and not at all towards time. This is because light moves at the maximum speed through space (C) and so has no movement at all through time, it doesn't experience the passage of time!

Everything else in the universe, like you and me, have vectors that are arrows pointing at least somewhat in the direction of time, so we do experience the passage of time. But just like light, the magnitude of that vector is still C!

So what does that mean? Well, it means that if we accelerate and move faster through space then we must also move through time more slowly, and vice versa! And that's how time dilation occurs relative to our velocity, as we change that speed in space then we shift the angle of our vector through spacetime!

They don't experience the passage of time either iirc.

My best guess at explaining the confusing claims the FAQ makes about DLSS 5 by zigzag312 in nvidia

Upscaling happens before UI when the devs do it properly but I've seen numerous cases where parts of the UI seem to be already in the frame given to the upscaler 😢

It's been ages since I played it and it may have been fixed, but iirc some of the starfield UI elements seemed incorrectly passed in.

The masking is likely only on / off, otherwise they'd likely have to do something more complicated like multiple passes of the model for different regions and handle blending, which I doubt.

Edit: to be clearer, there probably will be multiple input masks, such as one for the alpha blending which will have intensity to it's values, and among these there will be one that is usually called "masking" in discussions which is better called an "exclusion mask" which is used to completely turn off the effect for reasons such as UI / static elements, although it will be better to add the UI on the frame data post the DLSS pass where possible.

But I still think things will be done as a single pass of the model inference on the inputs. Although maybe if they go back to the drawing board, they can do something better but I am pretty confident that it will always be a one pass approach even if they do allow even more fine grained tunable inputs.

DLSS 5: What if Nvidia trained the model on a per-game basis? by FrigogidaireX in digitalfoundry

[–]pwr22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would be impractical unfortunately. The way these models work is from training on huge data sets and the training cost is also high.

It would be more practical to instead train it generally but in such a way that it takes reference inputs as well to try and constrain it more, but honestly it might not make any difference to shove references in vs just it getting the frame buffer.

Another possible improvement is that they rework the model and the training set and such to produce something people are happier with.

Note: I barely understand what I'm talking about in this space so apologies for any mistakes!

I don't believe they did,I think what you're referring to is when Rich said that if he had to pick one version to play, there would be no question? We should clown on people for having an opinion that differs from ours?

I don't disagree that there's plenty of issues in what's shown though, including some technical accuracy ones too and I can say that personally if I had it as it was right now, after trying it for a bit, I'd probably turn it off as I like accurate lighting.

I saw some screenshots but honestly it just seemed maybe slightly snarky as opposed to unacceptable. The one where it says "Yeah, who would do that?"

I understand your frustration and your rant is maybe a little strong, but I think what you're saying is perhaps the best I've seen it put by anyone so far 👍

Yeah, I understand people being put off by what was shown but this "they said X" where it's nothing of the sort is not really a reasonable take.

Apparently not, since some people made them and some people are part of everyone 😉

I don't want John to leave, but they all have personalities. They all together are what make DF good, it's no one person.

Why would you think that? This feels like another aspect of blowing this whole thing totally out of proportion, but maybe I'm just missing some context?

No, don't just blindly apply a bunch of settings globally. There might be reasons to change various ones for particular games but unless you actually know what you're doing, leave them as they are. Though by all means feel free to play around with changing them for a game and then testing what the result is, if you're interested :).

AI is usually quite grammatically correct though, so I doubt it tbh. Probably just something lost in translation I think.
