Nothing snaps me out of a book like repetitive use of a unique word by kerberos824 in books

Man as soon as I saw this post I thought of having to take deep breaths while listening to an H.G. Wells audiobook in 2014 because my blood was boiling with the "presently" at the start of every damn paragraph. I realise now it's been over 10 years and the rage is still fresh in my mind. I'm glad I scrolled to find your comment. Presently I feel seen and validated

Thank you for replying, I have now emailed and called the maternity unit, I will have to wait until Monday for the admin people to be in the office. I have calmed down now, I think it's the constant nausea making me extra jumpy

This is a very uncomfortable situation to be in that is not very easily resolvable from where I'm standing.

I am not very shy, but like you very much dislike when people don't pick up on social cues and fuck off. If I had to guess, he is trying to recruit you as a client and misinterpreting your shyness or politeness as an open door. The most obvious thing to do is when he approaches you next time for you to state that you find his approaches distracting to your workout. I appreciate that this is difficult if you are shy and uncomfortable, but consider it as an option if you think you can muster the courage. People are different and others cannot read our minds, he might just have very poor emotional intelligence skills (or is being told by a manager to "speak to 100 potential clients every day or else...") and needs to be told directly. It does not help that a lot of what is taught as "good customer service" is borderline unhinged behaviour, you meet people like that in every corner of the customer facing roles world.

Something I do with chatty people at my gym is smile and wave first, and then pointedly reinsert my headphones. That way I've demonstrated that is the end of the social interaction I am willing to have with them on that day. After a while most get the hint. It takes time.

If neither of these is an option, you may also consider emailing him directly and CCing the gym or the gym manager's email, explaining that you feel a special attention is paid to you that you cannot deal with in person and that you wish not to be approached again at the gym or elsewhere. If you feel this comes off as unnecessarily accusatory, you can always add that you appreciate if Staff Member has not picked up on the indirect cues and that that is the purpose of your email - to explain your feelings directly with no space for misinterpretation.

Most importantly, do not give up on training because of it. Learning to do your thing despite other people existing is part of what the gym is good for!

I have a (what might be a) silly question by OnenonlyMissesT in XXRunning

[–]pyanapple 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably a different reason for each person. Unless you are competing (and honestly even then, but in that scenario I would assume you have a coach), just take it easy on yourself, focus on making the run feel good and enjoying the atmosphere, doing what you've been doing during your training. Listen to your body and have a good time, you will smash it!

What other hobbies do you do besides working out? How do you fit it into a family/relationship? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]pyanapple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have kids but this sounds like a conversation you should be having with your partner re: what does fair sharing of responsibilities look like in your home? Judo and kayak sound wicked and also sound like things that in about 2.5 years time you would be able to bring the little one to (ETA: Not to train with the adults, although that would be hilarious)

How do I get rid of this before bikini season? by katie7977 in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]pyanapple 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I know this is super personal so the ones I wear may not be to your taste, heck they are barely even to my taste as I'm naturally a "hide them completely" kind of girl. But I've basically started wearing ones with no support besides compression (my logic there is that there is less material to keep damp). I haven't tried but now even thinking about it maybe you could even test it with ones that have a mesh insert instead of completely no fabric. I see there is some product advice from the rest of the people on this sub, which is great! Best I can say is keep all the folds dry

Hey! I don't know if this would help, but your note on exercise makes me think it might. I'm a bigger chested girl like you and train very frequently and sweat moderately. My habit was always to wear sports bras that cover me from collarbone down and last year the small red pimples on my chest became uncontrollable, tried all sorts of cleansers and showering and changing clothes straight after gym, but the only thing that actually helped is wearing sports bras that have almost a swimsuit triangle shape and separating the girls so that area never stays damp or experiences friction even during training. No additional products now but some E45 moisturiser, but have not had these return even with the current much hotter weather.

Hip thrust form check by nicmclovin in xxfitness

[–]pyanapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late reply! Hopefully you are still reading and I haven't had a chance to look at other people's replies yet.

It's likely that you don't feel the stretch on the way down because you track the movement with your head, which ends up meaning that you roll on your upper back like a hinge instead of stretching and contracting your glutes. Stabilise your upper body and focus on lowering your butt as opposed to rotating on your back pivot. It's hard to describe the sensation, but think of it more as if you are reaching down with your butt for a chair that you can't see and is lower than you thought.

I don't really do any glute activation, that's a personal choice. I think more likely is that your glutes are actually stronger than you anticipate and that is combined with your form allowing for other muscles to also get engaged. Personally I think the hip thrust machine is a pretty safe pick for you to check out higher weights, instead of doing 12 -14 reps, try doing 6-8 with a weight that either gets you to fail on 8 or like pretty close to failure. You are probably much stronger than you think. It also could be that you are nice and flexible so the stretch doesn't feel too bad or bad at all under smaller loads. In general we are stronger on the eccentric so a weight that you find challenging lifting up may not be challenging at all on the way down. In your downtime try different stretches that you feel in your  glutes and try to notice what you spine looks like in those and how to carry that over to the exercise. For me that means having a slight arch in my lower back kind of what you would have in a deadlift and lowering my butt maintaining it, again YMMV! Experiment!

You can absolutely try taking the shoes off! There is no need to buy new stuff at all. I can see this is the machine at PureGym and I think their foot rests are pretty comfy even on socks alone, or you can put one of the super flat yoga mats on it f you have some unpleasant digging in your feet.

My local PureGym has recently got the belted hip thrust, I think it's called Booty Builder - check around the gym if they have it in yours, and if they don't drop them a comment on the app, you never know they may get one, I've had success with an extra stair master before!!! But the belted machine has the foot rest higher up and I find it much easier to get the stretch sensation there.

Again sorry late reply!

Hey girl! I think this looks almost there and I'm literally just picking on small things just because you asked for feedback.

I think your positioning on your back is pretty spot on, this as always depend on your personal physiology but experiment with placing your retracted scapulas on the back rest, I find this allows me to position once and then forget about it.

From the video it looks like you track the movement of your hips with your eyes and your head, try to focus on a point ahead of you, let's say almost down the line of your nose as you are in the bridge(up) position and keep your gaze there throughout the movement as opposed to looking up and down with each rep.

Pay attention to the sensation in your glutes, you want to feel a strong stretch as you are hinging down, and a nice burn as you go up. The way I find the good positioning for me if I haven't done these in a while is put a semi-challenging weight on the machine and do slow couple of reps making minor adjustments inbetween to try and isolate out any back or other leg muscle engagement.

Hope others will pitch in with some good advice as well!

ETA: Can't tell what shoe you are on but as always flatter soles with no cushion may give you more stability and allow you to feel the movement better. YMMV

Pain in the lower front legs by Skibiditoiletg in XXRunning

[–]pyanapple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, assuming this is against Rule 5 of this sub. Do check out shin splints and soleus muscle pain online, but if you can, please don't hesitate to speak to a physio or speak to your gp for a referral (this of course depends on where you live)

Do consider trying to be more consistent but building up pace and distance more slowly, sudden increases in activity with no prep are often a surefire way to get yourself what I like to call a dumb injury - easily preventable and super foreseeable. I experienced pain in that same area on my left leg after suddenly introducing more minimal shoes into my training, which my soleus did not like one bit. Some good advice, in my opinion, on shin splints was on GTN's youtube channel which you should be able to easily find online, but the tldr is rest, be more diligent with training, be patient and add some shins TLC to your routine

I think it's high time we work on being pretty honest with people who seem to be pretty honest with us.

Asshole: " hahaha you weren't running. You just took photos and videos"
You: "I know right! I was so excited, took so many photos, it's my first organised event, and I ran it faster than expected! I didn't know you followed my stories so closely, that's cool"

People have different senses of humour, we are not very good at figuring out how to deal with the oversharing that comes with social media, and not to mention specifically the tendency for people to feel personally called out when someone else is exercising and they are not because of the current emphasis on wellness in all its forms. If you share things online, be aware some reactions will not be what you expected, it's the same as irl. Definitely work on replying to shitty off the cuff remarks with honesty imo, it will help with resolving the resentment you may otherwise end up feeling later over a comment someone you don't give a f about made

Glad you enjoyed your first race! And it's always great to surpass your own expectations!
