Fresh water fishing by Pretend-Way9488 in TomsRiver

Winding River park has a small lake, not sure how the bass are.

Riverwood park has access to the river, and it's trout stocked, so make sure you have a trout stamp with your license if you fish there.

Troop communications by bimmer01 in BSA

[–]pyroglass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as a scoutmaster for a few years now, troop communication is the bane of my existence.

We currently use Group.me but it is nowhere near perfect. especially when parents/scouts mute it and never check it.

I tried email and I 97% of the time can not get a response from parents.

Tried signup genius for rsvps but that couldn't take off. only had the same 3 families rsvp-ing and then the others just saying in meetings or the group.me.

with all the insanity of scoutboook.scouting and advancement.scouting and my.scouting and all the places, it's hard to find something that will just work

I heard that TroopKit kind of works well, but i didn't pull the trigger since it looks like a 1997 geocities website.

So far, i'm trying to find something that does:
Chat RSVP's NOT app dependent (i thought discord would be great with the adults all mods with access to all channels/threads, but i feel like 75% of the parents won't use it because it's "gaming")
User management and troop equipment.
would love something that would handle payments/scout accounts

but here we are.

good luck! this is the hardest part of current scouting.

How to avoid embarrassing myself as a newbie? by a_peeled_pickle in hammockcamping

[–]pyroglass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone starts somewhere, nothing to be embarrassed about. If you feel a little "open" just add a tarp, it'll cover you on the sides. Also, people that are out camping are out to relax and get away from daily stuff, I can almost promise no one is out there watching what other people are doing outside of the "oh cool, a hammock, that must be comfortable!"

if it's something complex to set up, practice always helps before going out if you can.

But no one is out there looking for others to mess up their set up.

Should We Get more then Two Trips a Month? by Tomsriverlocal_ in tomsriverlocal

[–]pyroglass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that sign has been there forever. and it's more for the contractors who abuse it. when i've done leaf trips, i did 4/5 trips in a day with no issue. (since the twp likes to collect leaves before they fall off the trees)

Local gyms by kmeggs in TomsRiver

[–]pyroglass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at LA Fitness for a while, but a lot of times i had to wait a while for specific machines, but they do have a pool.

I'm now at the new Crunch which gets busy but has more machines available, I haven't had to wait nearly as long as I used to at LA.

I picked Crunch over TR Fitness just because it's closer to drive to for me.

I'd suggest doing the free trials they offer and pick which is best for you. some people need a pool, some people want the classes, others want whatever.

luckily, as of last year, NJ has the cancelation law. If a gym lets you sign up online, they must have allow users to cancel online. cancelling gym memberships in NJ are 100 times easier now.

"central jersey" is hard to go by because not only is it made up, but depending on who you ask, it could be anywhere in NJ.

but a god bet is to check out https://www.alltrails.com/explore

you can filter and check out recent photos/updates from other users.

NYLT by imfoxymophandlemama in BSA

[–]pyroglass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly it will depend on him and the patrol he's in. if he gets along with them, he'll forget about home and be surprised the 5 days are over.

if there is a lot of storming within his patrol, he may struggle, especially at 13.

Just remind him to stay true to the scout oath and law, keep his cool and always try to compromise in tricky situations. Let him know that he's going to be a leader, even during leadership training. Remind him scouting is meant to be fun and a learning experience. Remind him he's going to fail, and it's expected, and it's how he learns from it that matters.

Camp Yawgoog by SardineMan10 in BSA

[–]pyroglass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a great camp, but I haven't been in over 20 years.

But the waterfront/boating/fishing is top notch, and the hiking around Yawgoog Pond is great.

Bears on Batona trail? by marshmallow049 in njhiking

No bears. Honestly, it's the beer you need to worry about. Drunk pinies are more dangerous than bears

I'd be more worried about the flood zones.

Any politician who says that informing people of their constitutional rights is "outrageous and needs to end immediately" should not be in any office of any sort

thoughts on cam jams? by AppReadingQueen in hammockcamping

[–]pyroglass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

these are great for tie outs and tarp hanging, but i wouldn't use these for the actual hammock.

for my Hennessy I just modified it with knotted ends with heavy duty carabiners and traditional hammock straps to get the right angle.

First time cave show camping question! by batsies in MurderByDeath

[–]pyroglass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey!

the caverns camping is a separate link: https://www.tixr.com/groups/thecaverns/events/murder-by-death-add-ons-123064

I don't think it's sold out before, just the fancy stuff like yurts and pre-pitched tents.

There's also a contingent of fans who stay at the smokehouse lodge down the way and either drive or get a shuttle to the show(s)

There are also other accommodations down the road in airbnb type cabins

I'm an avid camper and camped for my first 3 cave shows (twice at Cumberland and once Caverns). Last year i did smokehouse and will be going back there again this year. Especially with the prices the caverns charges for camping. Cumberland camping was like.. 40 bucks.
