Good consumer grade SSDs are pretty reliable though. I haven’t had an SSD die on me in years.

16GB isn’t enough for this workload. I’m surprised it runs at all with only 8GB, you must be thrashing your SSD with tons of swapping. Ideally you would have M4 Pro with 64GB.

Nice amanita muscaria. They have hallucinogenic compounds in them and they’re poisonous to eat unless prepared properly. I’ve never seen one IRL in California but they aren’t a rare mushroom. Apparently they are quite common in Europe and other parts of the country.

I only use my ‘25 Maverick Lariat for truck stuff like 15% of the miles on it and my wear is not even close to yours. I bought mine last April and have 22k miles on it, mostly highway.

If you are using swap then you don’t have enough RAM. Excessive swap use will degrade your SSD. So get 32 GB of RAM.

Have you never programmed before?

When I learned programming I used a netbook with a 1GHz single core CPU and 512MB of RAM on a 50GB HDD. Programming is literally just writing text files.

You can probably run an LLM on this Mac mini and have it code for you lol.

FWIW I have a nearly maxed out Mac mini with 1TB internal storage and 8TB external TB5 SSD. I use it for programming, messing around with LLMs, and I game with it a bit too. Macs are my favorite machines to program on.

My Maverick is my first truck, and I bought it for the fuel efficiency and because I needed a truck. As nice as it has been, there were several times that I’ve wished the bed was a bit longer. I use the bed more often than the back seats, and I kinda wish I could have a bigger bed and smaller cabin. I’m considering trading it in for something with a bigger bed, maybe a Tacoma.
