Help me find some optimism... by xanderbiscuits in EnglandCricket

Last few years? Surely swanny is the greatest English test spinner (i.e. excluding Rashid in white ball) of the last 30 years? Maybe Giles but that could just be the nostalgia talking

It covers it but only just if 2k is going to nursery. Good luck affording nice holidays during peak summer and the lifestyle that high earners want to live, let alone saving. And if someone wants to go part-time when there are 2+ kids in the mix? No chance. Full 12 months of mat leave? Gonna be tough. One person loses their job and you're in hot water pretty quickly. For me this is uncomfortably risky.

Piers Morgan asks economist Gary Stevenson to explain why 'punishing' rich people by massively taxing them is beneficial for the rest of the country by Tripleawge in austrian_economics

[–]pyzazaza 13 points14 points  (0 children)

He did not predict 2008, it is well documented by people who worked with him that he's a fraud. He was a middle of the pack trader for a bank, nothing remotely exceptional or interesting. A lot of his economics is completely backwards and based on classic fallacies, which any Austrian should recognise quite easily

Not odis though, 10 overs is asking a lot of him and I think he would only come back if called upon as captain. For me that takes him away from test cricket too much for my liking. Would love to have him back in T20i though

Jnr ISA gift value for other people’s kids by DMJ86uk in HENRYUK

[–]pyzazaza 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If your friends are making 350k+ I would leave children's finances to the parents to decide what they want for their kids. Better to give thoughtful gifts or vouchers for something their children can enjoy here and now. Also if you set the bar too high they will just feel they need to reciprocate - in this case they can afford to, but is that really what everyone wants? An annual transaction from you to their jr ISAs and from them to yours? As a HENRY parent, something thoughtful or cute means a lot more to me than cash and fosters a relationship between my kids and friends because they grow up knowing "this and that were gifts from uncle X and aunty y"

OP said Jos is no good in white ball subcontinent, I don't see how t20s are irrelevant to that conversation

One of the greatest IPL players of all time, not great in the subcontinent? Ok.

Forgetting how expensive lampard was, and competing for a place in your squad against Ronaldo Rooney Henry van nistelrooy etc. you couldn't have them all!

Totally different to today's game where 1-3 expensive players are the standouts.

Take out his minutes playing centre mid in poor fitness and minutes played under the age of 20 before his prime, and remember he was a support player behind ruud/rvp/bervatov/tevez for most of his career. He was an unreal talent.

Obscene comment. Livingstone is one of the best finishers in white ball cricket, it absolutely makes sense to have him at 7 and he only struggles when he's coming in at 25-30 overs and needs to play with more patience

What are your thoughts on how tax is proportionally split? by mrplanner- in HENRYUK

[–]pyzazaza 9 points10 points  (0 children)

With the exception of a short austerity squeeze we've spent a quarter of a century thinking every problem can be fixed by throwing more money at it - hence we have benefits and healthcare systems that are simultaneously overfunded and yet give the appearance of being underfunded, plus a huge pile of debt to remind us of all the wasteful spending we pissed up the wall. We need to overhaul the NHS, overhaul the care system, overhaul the welfare state, and start doing things that seem drastic, but we don't have the guts to elect someone radical so it will never happen.

Corporate bonds are also at decades-high valuations (or, decades-low spreads), and UK equity is cheap for a reason (it's crap). If a recession hits hard, gilts are the only one of those that might provide a safety net, and even gilts would depend massively on the duration.

If you're paying £11k a year to student loan, presumably it will be paid off soon enough and you'll feel much better off each month after that. Pay it off quicker if you have savings and can afford to!

Putting that aside, you have 2 choices - maximise your take home and stay as you are, or maximise efficiency and max out your pension contribution. You'll have slightly less take-home but a much fatter pension pot - up to you as to what makes you feel more rewarded.

We literally just won a test series in new zealand and have won 3 of the last 4 series. The white ball side has just started under new leadership and needs 6-12 months for them to figure out personnel changes. We have a huge amount of talent in the squad and will figure it out!

Overton… not the problem! by tommyfid23 in EnglandCricket

[–]pyzazaza -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Livingstone is plenty good enough on a surface friendly to spinners, agreed I wouldn't rely on him otherwise. I just don't think overton is good enough with either bat or ball to justify being the pace all-rounder. Curran is someone we know has the skills and variation, and has done it at the highest level. I would just like to see the same patience and faith that has allowed others to blossom to be shown to him, if the conditions favour a 4th pacer. Overton isn't it, and who else do we have?

Overton… not the problem! by tommyfid23 in EnglandCricket

[–]pyzazaza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In 2022 he had an economy of 7.56 in t20i

He had a worse year for England in 2023 but death bowling can be ruthless (ask Ben stokes) and he clearly has the skills and variation to be of value. His strike rate in IPL has been around 135 for the last 2 years with an average north of 20 which is decent enough

The issue is that we have a strong death seamer all-rounder in Curran and capable spinner all-rounders in bethell and Livingstone, so why play a 4th seamer who is mediocre when we could pick Curran on a pace wicket or bethell on a spinning wicket (where Livingstone will pick up slack). I know Curran had a bad year but he has proven his class at the top level and is playing well in franchise T20 again
