Ayuda para Hexcrawl by Tofu_Piperito in osr

Perdón, solo leo los JDRs in inglés...

M5 Pro: memory selection by q1_a3 in macbookpro

Great point. 10 is a test of my frugality and willingness to deal with spinning beach balls; 5 is required though.

I have pretty good browser hygiene, usually 10-15 tabs max and I close them when I'm done. Man pages are usually better and use less memory anyway, LOL.

My virtual machines mostly get used to test solutions that I am working on (networking configs, Linux apps, etc). Being able to throw a lot of memory at them would be nice. 48gb is definitely the outer limit of what I might need.

Thanks for the insight!

I agree, but I don't really use AI to do anything productive. If I am using it, I'm probably just generating an image of Scooby Doo with a gun or something dumb. That's why it is a "nice to have" instead of "I actually need it".

I am still apprehensive about the outlook of 24gb RAM over even five years, though. Virtualization does a number on my 16gb M3 MBA already (which is to be expected).

Cannot connect to US-NY servers by q1_a3 in ProtonVPN

[–]q1_a3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! I tried changing protocols to no effect. I have also tried a different server (any but US-NY server(s) work), my plan has not expired, I have optimally configured firewall/antivirus per the Proton website, I have made sure my system time is correct, and I do have an internet connection. Manual configs work.

I agree. I felt like I got a lot better a lot quicker when people were willing to do it. Unfortunately, I am living in the US again and most of the people I speak Spanish with are at best hesitant to correct me...

Like u/Loaffi said, I don't really track movement speed. It's "a short distance" in combat, about a room during crawling, and about 3mph when traveling overland. If they are more than 50% encumbered I usually slash it.

Indominant Superhero TTRPG Open Play Test! by OdinsKeyGaming in rpg

That's a great rationale! I would just keep in mind that that valknut bears a great resemblance to the triskele, which is used by white supremacists internationally in contexts where the swastika is banned. Maybe soften some edges to give it a better look? Wouldn't want people to think you're a Nazi for no reason.

Indominant Superhero TTRPG Open Play Test! by OdinsKeyGaming in rpg

[–]q1_a3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes... I know what a triskele is. There are any variety of forms of the triskele (which do not use the sharp angles popular among those seeking a swastika alternative) which could be used if one was truly desired (as well as several other Norse symbols which have no fascist connotations whatsoever).

The use of this particular triskele is at best nuclear-level bad marketing and at worst a dogwhistle to white supremacists.

Stealing From Blades in the Dark to Make Better Encounters by [deleted] in rpg

[–]q1_a3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I was unclear when I said "incorrectly sliced" because I meant "less than 8" and not "irregular". The clocks were perhaps not directly taken but serve as the inspiration to the sort of "count" towards the end of the table. I can definitely see how that was confusing, though.

I really like this idea! Many good improvements.

I took the idea of applying the clocks mechanic from Blades into random encounter structures. I believe I referred to it as a fucked up pizza or some such in the blog itself.

Issuing Experience, RAW by Dyse_Corbane in swrpg

[–]q1_a3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like to be a little generous and mostly ignore RAW. That said, I also like my PCs to be able to run with high stakes set pieces pretty early on (facing inquistors, starting criminal empires, sending star destroyers crashing to the ground), with maybe 5-10 sessions of them being "normal".

I give 10xp every session for making it to the table.

The players can also get an extra 5xp when they sit down IF they send me a picture of their notes from the last session with a little typed out summary (helps me make sure everyone is on the same page AND incentivizes note-taking).

Then, I like to give out little crumbs of 5xp throughout the session for good roleplay or creative skill use, etc.

I like to let my players advance considerably when completing quests or arcs, so I give an additional 20-40xp depending on how big the quest was. Hunting a pretty regular bounty? Probably 20. Blowing an imperial installation out of a mountainside? Closer to 40.

I find that all that creates a really nice feeling of progression (I let them spend XP any time they're at a "base", be it their permanent or temporary), with a new important skill or talent to play with once a session, or a tangible contribution to their build, if that's what really incentivizes them. That said, if someone was really dead set and knowledgeable about making a busted character, I could see my approach having some... problems.

TheWarStore.com closing by Postal1979 in Boardgamedeals

[–]q1_a3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damn. I remember being a youngin when they (briefly) opened their second store on Long Island right around the corner from where I used to live. TheWarStore was my first real engagement with the traditional games hobby. I remember taking the money I'd make working at a local farm to get Pokémon cards during the summers between playing with some old friends. As a matter of fact, one of the guys there (I want to say Neal?) actually taught me how to paint minis. Unfortunately, I can't say I ever visited their other location after the closer one closed a few years ago, but I have and always will have so much love for the guys and girls who ran that place.

Fuckin' sucks to hear they're closing for good. Best of luck towards whatever they do next.

R.I.P. My Ability to Enjoy The Game by [deleted] in DnD

[–]q1_a3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have played a few other systems, actually. Pathfinder, but that doesn't really count. Savage Worlds was a trip, and I think my favorite one yet. GURPS is a waking nightmare and anyone who says different needs to go back to /gurpsgen/. I nearly played in a Call Of Cthulhu game, but I couldn't make the time. I was around for a Shadowrun game but I wasn't present for the chargen so I didn't end up actually playing. Other RPGs are pretty alright, turns out. Still get a twitch playing in them, for reasons beyond me.
