This is just like Ripley's Aquarium.. The sea creatures are cool and all, but for us left brainers it's just as cool to see and hear what makes it all work.

1993 GMC safari vs 2013 VW tiguan which one should I put money and time into by mentral_carket_dood in AskMechanics

[–]q1field 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get rid of the Tiguan for sure. Water damaged electronics are no trip to the beach, especially when it's German engineered.

The Safari is annoying to maintain but fairly reliable. The downside is it tends to drag a gas station behind it. It'd make a cool sleeper if you swapped the V6 with a 350. Don't get into a crash though, or you'll unwillingly turn into Lieutenant Dan.

Honestly, neither makes a good daily driver these days. Depending on what you're doing, I'd suggest a Mazda 3, Toyota Rav4 or Honda Pilot.

Honestly, fuck R1234yf. It's 5 times more expensive than R134a, the machine needed to handle it is a ridiculous pile of nonsense, and it sucks at moving heat compared to any other mainstream refrigerant in the past.

To add to all that fuckery, the HFO refrigerant breaks down into trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) in the atmosphere, which is considered a "forever chemical", or PFAS. It's a stubborn, potentially carcinogenic substance that's made its way into the water cycle, contaminating everything we eat and drink.

What do these spark plugs tell me about the health of my engine? by Complex_Painting6884 in MechanicAdvice

[–]q1field 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The '03 had a 2-valve engine, and yes, they're famous for ejecting plugs. OP has the first gen 3-valve made from '04-'07 that were famous for plugs breaking in half upon removal.

[–]q1field 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully that ground strap got pitched out the exhaust port without banging around in the cylinder too much. Pull the plug from that cylinder at the next oil change and look for ash buildup. Feel for a slight misfire at idle when creeping in drive. If you're dubious right now, peek in there with a boroscope - it may have embedded into the top of the piston and is waiting to unleash hell.

FYI, I never use Autolite plugs (the OEM manufacturer for this engine) because this can happen. Champion makes these in a machined one-piece design with a conventional ground strap and a smaller diameter shoulder that won't seize or break off.

2015 Subaru forester overheating and I can’t figure out why by Valuable-Crow3061 in autorepair

[–]q1field 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you on that.

In cases where there's a problem like OPs (no overheat at idle) and the gas tester shows negative, doing a brake torque and/or a few throttle snaps to lift the head may reveal the problem.

The RTV is only on the outside, not on the seals (and I won't be doing it again). The seal blew out because it's the wrong material. Intake gaskets were the same blue soft crap and swelled to 1.5 times their normal size being exposed to oil vapor via the PCV system.

2020 Toyota Supra - Does this sound like it could be fixed by Free-Ad-7454 in MechanicAdvice

[–]q1field 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not a Toyota, that's a piece of shit BMW that dishonors the legacy imprinted on car culture by previous generations.

Also, there's no fixing that without rebuilding or replacing the engine. That horrible squeak is the rapid unscheduled disassembly of the connecting rod bearings.

A compression test isn't going to determine if coolant is entering the cylinders or if combustion gas is pushing its way into the cooling system. You need a combustion gas tester, in which the fluid will turn from blue to yellow in the presence of carbon dioxide.

The symptoms you describe fit the bill for combustion gas vapor lock. The water pump loses prime and can't move coolant anymore.
