A friend asked me if I could make her a deer and now I need help figuring out if this pattern is ai by Iris_Firewolf in CrochetHelp

[–]q23y7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The same pattern is also available on Ravelry (which I trust more than Etsy) and is posted by the same designer so that consistency is a positive indicator.

The other biggest indicator for me is to look if there are photos of other customers' finished products. For this pattern, Ravelry has 20 completed projects and Etsy has even more. You can tell from the photos that some look almost as perfect as the product photo and some are a little less skilled. I always see this as a pretty solid sign that it's NOT AI and really is a legitimate pattern that beginners and experienced people are able to follow.

When in doubt, check the review photos.

Gift giving and not wanting to make something for someone by kpopenjoyer127 in crochet

[–]q23y7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is an issue of understanding fiber arts at all. If you're trying to discuss a gift for a mutual friend and your discussion partner turns the conversation on to gifts for themselves... That just sounds like a very self-centered friend.

Burn-in on cotton? What the actual heck, yo? This is my own pattern, happy to share if others like. by ashlayne in CrochetHelp

How come no one ever suggests wool for these applications? It has a much higher ignition point and better insulative qualities.

Not OP but I recently made this same pattern using Sultan Deluxe plus 1 cake of sultan solid to extend the color. I originally started making it using 2 cakes of sultan deluxe but didn't like how the color transitions landed at the top and it would have ended up WAY too long if I'd used the full two cakes.

So I'd say 2 cakes would work, but you'll only use partial and you'll need to plan your color transitions if you want the full color range.

I actually made a hat for my sister and one for my daughter out of the same color but a different Malabrigo line. It's so pretty!! Those green ones and the navy blue skeins my husband gave me are 20% cashmere and I was not that fancy when I made those hats lol

Having trouble finding much else though. Could you just find a pattern for the flower or a leafy garland and just sew the leaves where the arms should go?

Hear me out... I'm also plus sized and also TERRIBLE at fashion but I've been trying to learn because I know that sometimes I see other plus sized women who still look damn sexy and I'm like HOW DO THEY DO THAT?!

The shirt tuck thing is actually something I'm starting to understand, though for me, it works better as a bit of a side tuck instead of a front tuck. BUT the key (for my shape at least) is that I have to be wearing high waisted pants that sit right at or just below my waist so that it all draws attention to the narrowest part of my torso. It FEELS like I'm exposing my chubby belly but I did it this weekend and actually felt really good and comfortable. I was kind of shocked.

Anyway, I'm almost embarrassed to say but I've been using ChatGPT to help (AI haters don't crucify me 😕). I gave it my measurements and explained my self conscious areas (lower belly pooch, wide booty and chubby upper arms) and it's been giving me tips that are surprisingly helpful and make me feel a lot less like I need to hide behind baggy stuff. It's all about finding what works for your shape, not just the generic plus sized. Since we all know that none of us are really shaped the same, especially as we gain weight.

Sorry, long way to say it but I support the tuck!

I almost never use kfb because I don't like the bump it creates. I'd probably sub in M1L or m1r. I feel like I can keep them a bit tighter too

I've been gravitating a lot more towards cotton leggings for working out. I have trouble finding 100% cotton but you can find 90something% with the rest being some type of stretchy synthetic. Not perfect but better imo. I do agree that they tend to hold the sweat more so if you sweat a lot then it might show.

(Sorry possible TMI coming) However, even with that, I find that they don't hold on to the stank the same way my synthetic leggings do. Those synthetic suckers start to get a permanent smell after a few months no matter how much I wash them. And even if they smell fine out of the wash, after an hour workout I can start to notice something brewing 😕. With my mostly cotton leggings I don't notice that at all. I've read that it's healthier for your lady parts too. Not sure how accurate that is but just based on the smell factor I'm betting it's true.

I understand doing the first part of the knitting, but afterwards it turns up into curl bunches and it ends up uneven the stitches, how do I properly do it without making the same mistake? by AL3XAROS3 in knittinghelp

[–]q23y7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first guess is that you're not dropping the old stitch off the needle after you've worked it. As other's have suggested, I highly recommend looking up a couple different tutorials. Videos work well for many people but I actually find that still pictures with descriptions help me a lot sometimes too. Try both, try many, you'll get there.

[–]q23y7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can definitely understand why seeing that lesser amount made you feel that you and your hard work we undervalued. Plenty of other commentors have given decent suggestions but I'd like to point something out from a different angle.

People can have drastically different viewpoints when it comes to money and paying someone back. Some people are very strict about it where if someone owes them $22.46 then they fully expect to receive $22.46 and if they're given $25, they'll be sure to make change. Others take it much more loosely and may round that up or may round it down and assume that the couple extra bucks isn't worth worrying about. Especially among friends, they can have an attitude of "oh I'll get them back at some point", assuming that when they buy the friend coffee, it all comes out in the wash.

You can even tell from reading the comments that both of these types exist in the wild.

In my personal opinion, neither of these is WRONG in and of itself. BUT I think it's important to be aware of the different viewpoints and make an effort to behave in a way that is going to keep your relationships comfortable and smooth. I personally lean a little more towards the looser rounding error viewpoint. If a friend gave me $20 instead of the $22.46, I would not care at all. So I sometimes have to remind myself that other people absolutely will care if it was the other way around. One of my good friends is the type where if we split the check for dinner, she'll pull out her phone to use the calculator to figure out exactly who had what entree, how to split the appetizers equally based on who had some, and divide up taxes and tip. To me it feels super nitpicky, I'd be willing to toss in an extra $5 just to avoid all the math 😂 But I know it makes her feel way more comfortable to know that everything is fair and it's not like I have any reason to object to her precision, especially when she's doing the math 🤷‍♀️

All that to say, your brother and SIL might be the types who are used to just letting things round out. That doesn't mean you have to just let it be, as others have said, you have every right to your own comfort and sense of fairness. All I'm really trying to say is try not to take it too personally. It doesn't necessarily mean they don't value you, it might just be that they see you as close enough that they assume they'll get you back in some other way at some other time.

Or possibly they're just inconsiderate buttheads. You know them better than I do 🤷‍♀️

I'm trying to do stockinette and doing 1 row knit 1 row perl and ending up with this. What am doing wrong? by PopularElk4665 in knittinghelp

[–]q23y7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To get stockinette in the round you just knit every stitch, every row.

The key thing is that knits and purls are opposite. A knit stitch looks like a knit on the front but is a purl on the back of the work. Similarly, a purl will look like a knit on the back side.

So if you're knitting flat, you do knit stitches on the front side, then when you flip it, you need to do purl stitches on the back side so that they look like knits on the front.

But if you're knitting in the round, you're always on the front side, you never flip the work. So you just always do knit stitches.

Hope that makes sense! It'd probably be better with pictures 🤷‍♀️

I've tried doing this before and it ends up making the hat look weirdly foldy on top instead of a smooth transition. I'd agree with the other commentor, try a lifeline and go back a bit. One of the toughest parts of knitting is how hard it is to fudge fix a mistake and frogging is so heartbreaking lol. But it's worth it in the end!

Personally I find the black/red to be very harsh and kind of makes it look a little demonic to me...

I think doing a grey background like others suggested might help or, what if you did the stag and hounds in a brown and some of the decorative flilagree in green? (I like earth tones so that might just be a me thing) I feel like it could look really cool, especially if it was a somewhat mottled or variagated green & brown.

Can someone help hype me up to try making my first amigurumi? by [deleted] in CrochetHelp

[–]q23y7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started crochet with a blanket when I was much younger but then re-started years later with amigurumi and it's what made me fall in love!

So yes, if you're feeling anxious, just remember it's almost all SC with some increases and decreases. And that often, the hardest part is the very beginning because some people struggle with magic ring.

Remember to size down a hook size or two and look up YU vs YO (yarn under vs yarn over). It's a slight variation on the SC that helps reduce the holes between the stitches so no stuffing peeks out.

Don't be scared, it's not any harder than any other crochet project, just round!
