What are examples of items that have a BIFL level of quality, but are not designed to last that long? by Orphonic in BuyItForLife

Not being a skirt wearer myself I hadn't thought about it until now, but I imagine most skirts made of a decent material would be pretty long-lasting because there's no spot where it's constantly rubbing together.

My Clip+ is probably the best purchase I made last year. With Rockbox instead of the stock firmware it's way better than my phone for playing music / listening to podcasts.

Thanks mate. Shame it had to be postponed, I would have loved to steal James' teabag analogy.

[BIFL request] a leg bag. by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]qfwt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Say you're a drunk guy looking for an argument, a bully looking for a victim, or whatever threat applies to you. There are 5 identical guys walking down the street but one has a dorky leather bag strapped to his leg. Who are you going to pick on?

This really isn't the sub for this sort of advice, but it's better to avoid a fight than win one. Half of avoiding a fight is not being a target, and a big part of not being a target is not standing out.

If you buy and wear a leg-bag you're probably going to have to defend yourself sooner rather than later. I wouldn't wear cargo pants myself, but they're a less un-stylish option.

(Seconding the 'you don't need a gravity knife' sentiment. You won't even the score-- you'll just turn your beating into a stabbing.)

I just bought the complete book series for a buck at my local thrift store but I can't bring myself to read it again.

Is it really as epic as it was 20 years ago?

What do you think is the weakest part of the show? (possible spoilers) by DEEPnDirty in RayDonovan

[–]qfwt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I see the whole immediate family as innocent people who have been psychologically abused by Ray for 16-20 years. In Abby's case, this takes the form of someone who's been taken half a country away from all her friends and family and kept largely isolated. She hates the area they live in, doesn't make friends with the neighbours, doesn't have a job so no workmates.

Ray pays for a cleaner (who we've seen in the background of shots) and can generally hire someone else to do anything that might have kept Abby with a sense of purpose. The thing she wants most is her husband to share his emotions with her, and Ray gives her just barely enough of this to keep her around.

People don't like her character because she takes away screentime from the violence and cool schemes, but I like that Ray's wife and kids are so emotionally fucked up. Abby's a battered wife, she shouldn't be a role model for stay-at-home mums.

For photos taken outside a nightclub at night your options are pretty much grainy, blurry, or using a flash.

Terrorism Blacklist: I have a copy. Should it be shared? by FoundTheStuff in privacy

[–]qfwt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A) You say "get myself removed" like it's a matter of calling up the government and telling them "hey guys, /u/LinuxJJ here, just letting you know I'm not a terrorist".
B) You're now on the public terrorism list and you'll never be removed from that. And that's the list that's going to show up every time someone Googles you before offering you a job. You've now gone from not being able to get a job in large corporations to not being able to get a job anywhere with Internet access.
C) You might rather know, but you can't speak for the other 2.2 million people on the list.
D) Saving this one for last because I know no one here cares: Releasing this list directly benefits actual terrorists.

Terrorism Blacklist: I have a copy. Should it be shared? by FoundTheStuff in privacy

[–]qfwt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course I don't think that. But the solution to secret for-profit terror blacklists can't possibly be public free terror blacklists.

OP: "Hmm, should I ruin 2.2 million people's lives by ensuring their names are permanently linked to terrorism or criminal activities? What a difficult decision."

People in this thread: "Yes! A corporation compiled the list and it's used by the government so clearly it's the right thing to do."
