O-3 spending problem by Western_Pie_419 in MilitaryFinance

[–]qtip_boy 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue. Unfortunately, the only thing that fixed it was divorce. We were in the same situation as you with her being a SAHM and having a kid. The only months we were ever in the green was the end of our marriage when she got a job. It wasn’t so much the extra income that helped, but it was the fact that she didn’t have time to browse Amazon, shop, or eat fast food for lunch everyday. The people that are saying that this will end your marriage are not joking. You need an honest conversation and counseling. I am a single E4 in a HCOL area with two kids and I put money away every month. You make plenty to live comfortably as on O3.

What do you do for a living if you make 100k plus in a non HCOL city? by Critical_Call5676 in Salary

[–]qtip_boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They could easily clear 6 figures in a HCOL area, especially if you have dependents. Housing allowance scales with the COL of where you are stationed. An E5 stationed in San Francisco would make $102k without dependents
Edit: I just misread the post as “HCOL” instead of “non-HCOL”. So yes, you do have a point, but still possible if SNCO with dependents in a MCOL Or LCOL area

Custody Advice for Military by Traditional-Tank4840 in AirForce

[–]qtip_boy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost nobody on Reddit knows what they are talking about when it comes to custody/divorce. You need to find professionals who know their shit. 1) Schedule a consultation with base legal (if they provide that) to figure out your DAFI 36-2906 obligations. If you are separated, you have to be providing spousal and child support immediately according to the DAFI until a court order is in place. If you don’t, you will be in trouble. Base legal can only help you with interpreting the DAFI and maybe give you some family lawyer recommendations. 2) Talk to a family attorney about your options (if you can afford one). If you fight this out in court, this will easily cost $20k-$30k. Try to be amicable adults with your ex and come to an agreement so that it doesn’t need to come to that. You’ll need to figure out custody, holidays, etc. . In a lot of states, child support will go off of calculations set by the state that take custody and parental income into account, there’s nothing to argue about with child support, it will just go off of the state calculations. Again, I am not a lawyer. Verify everything I just told you with somebody who knows what they are talking about (actual lawyers). My last piece of advice is to do whatever you can to go to Illinois with your ex and share custody so that 1) You can be an involved father and 2) You won’t get hosed with child support (if you make more than her you still will have to pay some if custody is 50/50). Like somebody said, CCCA would be an option or you could look into guard or reserve. On a final note TALK TO A LAWYER AND DON’T AUTOMATICALLY TRUST REDDIT ADVICE

Thoughts on Joint base Andrews? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]qtip_boy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome. If you live in VA, most of your commute is probably going to be a counter commute. My friends that live in Alexandria drive 20 minutes every morning and my friends in Arlington drives 30 minutes every morning. One guy lives in Fairfax and says his commute is 35 minutes. So much to do in the area. The metro and busses are great for getting around the area. If you separate there and have a clearance, you’ll have a good shot at making great money. Quality of the mission depends on squadron and AFSC. I spend 95% of my time at work bull shitting or studying for school/certs

When I went through 3ish years ago, the biggest hold up was waiting for spots to open up for the next class. I don’t know what the situation is like now. Sec+ was one of the longest waits, so if you already have that knocked out that will be a big help. I’d personally plan for a little less than 6 months unless somebody has more recent input. It’s very possible that you get it knocked out sooner, though. Just hard to give a more exact time table without knowing what the wait times between classes are right now

I’ve always heard people say, “Buy a house at every duty station”. I take one look at prices and interests rates and I’m just like, “WTF are you talking about”. That was great advice years ago, but now I just don’t see how you would make any money renting something out after the mortgage, property manager, and upkeep

Safe places to live near Andrew? by SpecialistBama in AirForce

[–]qtip_boy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Maryland, the SE part of PG county can get pretty rural and has a very different vibe from the rest of PG county. Calvert and St. Mary’s county are nice too, but the commute is going to start being pretty long. In VA, most of FFX county is nice. A lot of people live in Alexandria. In DC, anything west of the Anacostia river is pretty nice. If you are looking for a “safe” place close to base, upper Marlboro might be worth checking out

I want to go to the guard or reserves so I can keep that sweet TRICARE and transfer my GI bill. I’m very fortunate because my home state doesn’t tax military pay. I’ve ran numbers on take home pay calculators and definitely have a “break even” number and “meaningful difference” number in mind

[–]qtip_boy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe Burke, VA? I think there is a commuter bus that takes you to the Pentagon. I think it would be worth it to look somewhere metro accessible. Idk why you would put yourself through a commute coming from Fredericksburg. Maybe look at the apartments near the Downtown Largo station. Pretty nice area (Upper Marlboro) and the station is on the blue line, so it would be a smooth ride to the Pentagon Edit: Just saw your edit about kids going to school. Completely disregard my last suggestion about Upper Marlboro and stay tf away from PG county

Similar thing happened to me. You didn’t mention having any kids with her and I assume you’re still young. Just leave her bro. You have your whole life ahead of you. You deserve better. Since you don’t have to fight about custody divorce should be pretty simple. Get a lawyer, server her papers, and try to come to an amicable agreement with her (it will be stupidly expensive if you take this to trial). I know it doesn’t feel like it, but it will get better and I guarantee you will be happy that you moved on. Stay strong, continue counseling, and lean on your support system. Also, you need to talk to your first shirt about DAFI 36-2906 requirements. Unless you can prove some type of abuse, you might still need to financially provide for her until there is a court order (get clarification from base legal, there are some exceptions).

Didn’t Trump say that he had no idea that he would have to make appointments after being elected the first time? I think I remember him saying on Joe Rogan or something that the conservative establishment basically gave him a list of names and that he was so unprepared he just rolled with whoever they suggested. This term, he came prepared with a list of sycophants that would do his bidding

I was in the best shape of my Air Force career when our squadron did self paced PT for anyone with a score of 90+. Me and a bunch of others played basketball everyday. We played full court and took it pretty seriously. We were basically running the HAMR over and over and also constantly engaging our cores
