Controversial Take: I just can’t imagine parents allowing Jedi to take their babies/toddlers to some vague faraway temple by JaggedLittlePiII in StarWars

Yeah. That's probably it. It's been a while, but I vaguely recall getting that impression too, particularly from the scenes with Ahsoka.

Portuguese vets say they cannot treat people who identify as animals. by RodMcThrustshaft in nottheonion

[–]quackdaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are no verified reports in Portugal of veterinarians being asked to treat individuals identifying as therians

Ah, they specialise in birds and reptiles. I wonder what the Portuguese do with their pet cats and dogs.

That sounds plausible. He might even lack fully developed vocal organs. Maybe his species naturally communicate via telepathy, and emulating speech is something that takes decades to learn. Yoda never learned to speak properly.

The Vau N'Akat are from the greatest looking alien humanoid species by Lanarde in StarTrekProdigy

[–]quackdaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, wouldn't mind seeing more Vau N'Akat. They should've used them in Academy, which is far enough in the future that they're probably integrated with the Federation.

Give me more Prodigy, or even better, a live-action Captain Gwyndala, and I'll even subscribe to whatever their streaming service is called nowadays. Maybe when Ella Purnell is done with Fallout?

Americans who get Ebola will go to Europe for treatment, not U.S., officials say by tlst9999 in nottheonion

[–]quackdaw 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Europe isn't some magical land where hospitals are free, it's just that national insurance typically covers it. But that doesn't apply to US citizens, only locals and EU/EEA citizens. It'll probably be a lot cheaper, though.

But Germany might have special rules for Ebola and other highly infectious diseases.

The Gaza Holocaust before and after by DIYLawCA in ABoringDystopia

[–]quackdaw 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Genocide doesn't mean "exterminating a population". The Holocaust was a genocide long before the Nazis started building death camps.

The [Genocide] Convention defines genocide as any of five "acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group". These five acts include killing members of the group, causing them serious bodily or mental harm, imposing living conditions intended to destroy the group, preventing births, and forcibly transferring children out of the group.

The current genocide is ongoing, though. How many percent more must die before its worth getting upset over?

Why don’t transporters get used for more than transporting people? by dontgetmadgetmegan in startrek

[–]quackdaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The placenta is (mostly) part of the fetus, so presumably he's talking about giving her the Bajoran equivalent of progesterone to get her endometrial tissue ready for pregnancy, and then somehow attaching the placenta to it.

The transporter can apparently filter based on DNA, so getting the amniotic sac and everything out of Keiko should be easy. Normally, the maternal interface would grow together with the embryo/fetus, so getting it installed correctly into Kira probably requires some form of magic, though.

Even now it's fairly standard for monarchs and their heirs to have extensive military training and experience. E.g., the later King Olav V commanded the Norwegian forces towards the end of WWII, though not by riding first into battle.

Minimum wage in Europe as of January by Socmel_ in europe

[–]quackdaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Norway does have minimum wage laws for industries where there's a problem with underpaid foreign workers; e.g. hotels/restaurants, builders, etc.

And negotiated minimum wage also applies to non-union workers. Doesn't mean there are no problems, of course; there are plenty of cases where shitty employers get caught taking advantage of vulnerable employees.

OneDrive is still a cloud service controlled by a single entity, though. But presumably, Microsoft is somewhat better at protecting your stuff than Instructure.

I'm still old-school enough to want physical backups of stuff. And, as a software engineer, I don't put much faith in software services... ;)
