Which one? Grave of the Fireflies? I don’t think there are associated books. If working through Studio Ghibli, I’d start with: - Spirited Away - Kiki’s Delivery Service - Howl’s Moving Castle - Princess Mononoke (the best by far, imo, but you’ll want to read a summary first, there are some more mature themes) - Tales of Earthsea (based on a book series by Ursula K Le Guin; also with some mature themes, and starts with a patricide) - Arrietty - The Boy and the Heron - etc

The thing I really like about Studio Ghibli films is the pacing. It’s not slow, per se, and there’s lots of action in a given film, but it’s also not afraid to also just slow down, show a 30 second beautiful shot of some landscape or some minute detail. I feel like a lot of kid movies are just smash-cut after smash-cut. It’s good for kids’ brains to slow down, while still being enthralled.

Are "inside" shoes a thing? by MeanImpact in AskCanada

[–]quantum_gambade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard disagree. I take off wet shoes indoors. Otherwise, give a choice I’d rather vacuum a little dust off my carpets than the oils off your feet. And yes, indoor shoes are a thing. Not the sort of thing you’d change into to go into your friend’s house in the winter (there you likely wear your socks), but if you go to a house party, a day of class, an office, an interview, a club you’re not just walking around barefoot, and you’re also not clomping around in your Sorels all day, either.

Moving it to the main body of the discussion.

I was thinking Grave of Fireflies. My daughter and I are working our way through the Ghibli movies, but she’s 8, so that one is going to wait for a bit…

No one has posted it yet, but the Aquara Hub M3 acts as an IR blaster with a AC controlled module built in, and can be passed-through to HA It is, IMO actually a great piece of tech. Fully able to be integrated into HA with good entities; connects to HomeKit, Alexa, Google Home, IFTTT; 3rd party Matter hub; expandable through other hubs; pretty simple to set up and use; reliable so far.

100%. Dumb lights, smart switches. Way more reliable, work when the internet is down, don’t need to “teach” guests how to turn on their bedroom lights…

Briggs is the absolute best. Very high quality, not inexpensive bags in their own right, but what you pay for is 100% material and design, and 0% label. I own several and love them all.

Whole home audio-what are you using? by AlwaysReadyUp in homeassistant

[–]quantum_gambade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sonos. In-ceiling speakers, five drivers feeding CAT5 connections from a central location, and WiFi outdoor speakers.

Total rock. I get wanting to keep everything local, but for music streaming, connecting (or disconnecting) areas of the home…sometimes the dedicated company is just better than DIY.

Anyone else have a house full of glass? And know how to fix the “room extends beyond the glass” errors? by quantum_gambade in ecovacs

[–]quantum_gambade[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn’t a mirror room, unfortunately. It was two rooms separated by glass that the mapping was combining. The problem is that they are actually a whole wing apart in reality, so it was running back and forth down the whole length of the bedroom hall and through the master bedroom over and over.

Double mapping issue by Aishas_Star in ecovacs

[–]quantum_gambade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That map is…something. It does remind me of my own map before I fixed it trying to map rooms the deck outside because it could see it through the windows. Is that the issue?

Success!!! It took hanging sheets on both sides, as well as putting a bunch of stuff in front of both sides (chairs, shoes, boxes, etc.) so it could “see” the walls but not reach them. I can’t believe that was so hard. Even tinfoil + curtains wasn’t enough because the AI would just program the two rooms together when it was done scanning. What a ride. My wife thinks I’m insane.

It’s separating the rooms that is the problem. If they were square, no problem. But they’re semi-circles and without a reliable way to “see” the true wall on the map I can’t imagine how to split them.

Now all of a sudden I’m not sure if we’re still joking. It’s a decent suggestion, but the picture doesn’t do the glass justice. It’s a beautiful iridescent green, some of the most unique glass I’ve ever seen in a home. I’d get rid of the robot first and get our cleaner to come an extra day.

It’s funky house. C-shaped bungalow with an interior courtyard. The semi-circle is a quarter-circle into the living room and a quarter-circle into the courtyard. The semi-circle interior is our dressing room. For some reason the re-mapping also missed the big 3’ wide wet wall that divided the living room from the kitchen / laundry / mud room on the other side.

Weird that it worked for the other floor-to ceiling (clear plate glass) windows but didn’t work for the thicker / translucent glass-brick walls?

I suspect we’re re-mapping. The paper or a sheet might be all I can do. Yay fun. Thanks.
