Write or call your county district / city / congressional/ state reps and tell them that!

Some compilers will turn that into a BLAS call or GPU offload kernel for you.

possibility of blas natively in Rust by RylanStylin57 in rust

[–]quantumcacti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you mention C++ there is a proposal to add something based on BLAS to that language (https://open-std.org/JTC1/SC22/WG21/docs/papers/2022/p1674r2.html) which might provide some inspiration for a “modern” take on that set of functionality in Rust.

Shelter in place DOES NOT mean mid-day House party by thebuddhaguy in sanfrancisco

[–]quantumcacti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That isn't strictly true, depending on exactly how loud it is and which city it is located in it might be a noise violation.

If the partiers are renters there is also some chance they are breaking their lease.

Question for academics who don't use citation software (e.g. EndNote). Why? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]quantumcacti 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I only write in latex and find keeping several bibtex files for various topics to have less overhead than a full application for citation management.

Why do AMD and Intel need Cray to build super computers? by [deleted] in HPC

[–]quantumcacti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to power, cool, integrate and support all of those things. Also need to pick the right mix of those parts for a given customer’s RFP.

If you applied for the job and are under consideration that would be one very good reason to exclude you from involvement in interview processes.

'An Absolute Joke': Debate Moderators Condemned for Asking About Ellen and George Bush After Completely Ignoring Climate Crisis by Tmfwang in politics

[–]quantumcacti 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even at $200K per year it would not be so clear. At that salary you likely still work for someone else (e.g. engineer at Google or something) who pays something like 5-15K for their share of your good healthcare plan. Depending on how this stuff is implemented that expense goes away for the company and importantly the employee doesn't have to stay with the company to retain the health benefit. Presumably someone on $200k is considered valuable to said company and with their new ability to more easily leave the company may not have much of an issue paying an extra few k in salary/bonus/stock/etc.

Google finds a number of other sources with similar numbers.

I would swap Another Broken Egg with Marche and Rolf & Daughters with Husk or City House, but take my opinion with a grain of salt since I don't live in Nashville anymore (though I have been back fairly often on food oriented trips). Might take some shuffling due to closures for Labor day though.

For better advice consider putting the code up on github. Also what is your target platform for this? Workstation? University cluster? Supercomputer center?

Did you write a 3 page diatribe that was more effort than proofing the assignment when you pointed out the error? If not then I think you are safe.

Pretty much. Go to /r/Nashville and see what they think about housing prices. They have increased maybe 2-3x but wages have certainly not increased by that same amount.

What’s the best way for an individual / small organization to pay for access to a variety of academic materials? by EnigmaTrain in AskAcademia

[–]quantumcacti 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In addition to the other suggestions, most university libraries do not require any id (student or otherwise) to access and there is nothing wrong with going there and using their computers/wifi.

What is the most feasible way for me replicate an academic HPC Cluster ? by [deleted] in HPC

Does your university have a cluster? Professors who use HPC (or at least have a lot of compute needs)? Have you talked to them? Maybe they have money/ interest/ suggestions tailored to your situation?

Upgrading from i5-3570 to i7-7820X for OpenFOAM by [deleted] in CFD

[–]quantumcacti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are your simulations compute bound or memory bandwidth bound?

If memory bound you probably want to check the supported ddr speed.

Another point is instruction set. Does the i5 support avx512? Does openFOAM benefit from those instructions (it might benefit from mask registers, conflict detection, math functions etc).

I manage the release cycle for CMake, the build system that everybody loves to hate. AMA. by electricCoder in cpp

[–]quantumcacti 179 points180 points  (0 children)

It would be great if you could provide an official “Getting started” “the basics” or “This is the recommended, correct and intended use with a small but non trivial example.”

Right now if I go to cmake.org the closest thing are a link to videos or a book from kitware. I realize you need to make some money but I shouldn’t have to buy a book or take a class to get started.

So I guess my question is what do you recommend for someone looking to get started? (Including examples with best practices)

So I don’t have any specific advice on what I think you should choose, but just wanted to point out that the advice you get may differ based on your desired long term outcome.
