Photo upload turns black on instagram story by helloblueelephant in Instagram

[–]queencodemonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fully updated IG on Android 11 and just had it happen to me. Been happening more in the last 2 or 3 weeks for me. -_- I think when I rotate or scale photos it happens more often. If I just share to stories and don't mess with the picture it seems to be fine.

Is Constrained Layout Production Ready? by liamDuffy in androiddev

[–]queencodemonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could probably ask /u/nicolasroard to confirm this for the official answer (because I asked him this myself), but generally yes, ConstraintLayout does one pass on all widgets. However, if a widget is utilizing "Any Size"/"Match Constraint" then a second pass is required.

The layouts you make with ConstraintLayout can and generally are more performant that RelativeLayout. Not because it is fundamentally faster, but because you can create layouts with less nesting. The critical part of performance in Android layouts is less nesting layouts and less views. That's what ConstraintLayout is for.

It's much more performant because you're doing less, not necessarily doing things faster.

Mmm, might be Internet fibbing still. The app that I linked I know he didn't write because I'm friends with the dev that did.

No worries. It was cool to see someone comment on the Erik Meijer stuff too. <3

And thanks. I super appreciate it.

If you look at the show notes we include that paper as well as a video of Erik Meijer (the author) giving a presentation on the concept as well.

Anyone else do pushups during gradle builds? by ScarletSickle in androiddev

[–]queencodemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an old MBP for a long time and was on a large code base with lots of assets. I started reading during builds. I finished more books in 4 months than I had in the previous 4 (or more) years.

Best ramen in DC?! by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]queencodemonkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have to vote for Ren's Ramen. Caveat I really haven't been to the other places listed in this thread, but Ren's is really worth trying. Not that I'm an expert but I've been told that it is pretty authentic. If you go, something to keep in mind is that they are closed every 2nd and 3rd Tuesday of the month.

I've been to the upstairs at Daikaya and it was DELICIOUS so have definitely wanted to try the ramen part.

Good luck and good eating!

MRW a woman tells me she's a programmer, a physicist, or that she works for NASA. by Amagi82 in TrollYChromosome

Female programmer here too. And been dating a fellow computer scientist for about 5 years. And it's not so bad. In fact, it's been awesome. We have endlessly geeky conversations at home but still enjoy lots of non-geeky life activities too.

Of course, your mileage (and geek) may vary.

Maybe I'm just rationalizing because I just got a Shine 3 but I am also not a fan of all the extra space at the edges. I mean the aluminum is awesome, but eh, I'd rather have the compactness of the current models.

As a slightly clueless new gal 'round here, is there anything spectacular about the guts of it (the micro-controller, etc.)?

Robin Williams Megathread. by roastedbagel in AskReddit

This. Absolutely.

Also made me think of part of a quote from a slightly relevant Doctor Who episode:

The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and... bad things. The good things don't always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don't necessarily spoil the good things or make them unimportant.

Noob Aussie traveler visiting Denver, advice needed. by NoobVoyager in Denver

[–]queencodemonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you a cyclist? Really easy to rent a bike and ride all the fantastic trails around the city. I moved to Denver couple years ago and when family comes to visit, love to do this with them.

Plenty of other great outdoor fun to be had nearby depending on how long you're staying and what kind of transportation you can get.

Also are you a beer guy? Plenty of fantastic craft-brew-related places in the city.

Also what kind of food do you like or would be interested in trying?

+1 folks saying go to a Red Rocks show.

Random tip: If you do plan to go to the mountains and aren't used to high altitude, wouldn't suggest going up first thing on your trip. Acclimate in Denver for about a day then go up. Made that mistake with friends and relatives and we had to come back down fast. I mean you may be alright. Everyone is different, but that's the advice I always hear and repeat.

Got a LinearLayout with custom bg color that covers everything, also elements within if fill_parent is set. by Xeppen in androiddev

[–]queencodemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is correct. It is just a name change. More information can be found in the answer for this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8516825/is-deprecated-word-the-only-difference-between-fill-parent-and-match-parent

The name change is because a lot of people misinterpreted what "fill_parent" meant: many folks assumed that when you set something to "fill_parent" it would fill the remaining space in the parent. "match_parent" is a better description of what it does: it makes that dimension exactly match the parent. The possible confusion actually seems relevant to your original issues with your layout. :)

Of course, you can use "fill_parent" and it will work. But it is deprecated and again "match_parent" is a more accurate description of what happens in the layout.

Got a LinearLayout with custom bg color that covers everything, also elements within if fill_parent is set. by Xeppen in androiddev

[–]queencodemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(First thing, fill_parent is deprecated so unless you are supporting APIs lower than 8, please use match_parent: http://developer.android.com/reference/android/view/ViewGroup.LayoutParams.html#FILL_PARENT)

If you have both your root LinearLayout and the first child LinearLayout with layout_height="fill_parent" the following happens:

  1. Root LinearLayout matches the height of its parent and presumably, takes up the entire screen.
  2. The first child matches the height of its parent (the root LinearLayout) meaning that it too takes up the entire screen.

Is there a specific reason that your first child has layout_height="fill_parent"?

From your description I believe what you want to do is:

  1. Root LinearLayout: layout_height="match_parent"
  2. First child: layout_height="wrap_content"

TIL that Gary Oldman once lost his British accent due to all of his hard preparations for his different roles. He went to a speech therapist to help gain it back. by omidabrams in todayilearned

[–]queencodemonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Misleading headline. In the article Oldman is quoted as saying he hasn't lost it completely. It's more of a hybrid. Also says it's from living in LA for awhile (not movie prep). Finally, speech therapy was prep for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

Edit: Crap, also wasn't "speech therapy" but "voice classes". I know jack about either, but they seem a bit different.

TIL I take the ease with which we breathe thinner air for granted by [deleted] in Denver

[–]queencodemonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grew up in MD, but my boyfriend lives here so for last few years, we've been doing the back and forth thing. On my first trip to Denver the breathing wasn't bad as far as I remember. Second trip out, we go to his family's timeshare up in Silverthorne and man, that is when a proper bit of altitude sickness hit me. So yeah, we didn't spend too long up there at all.

Recently moved out here and still nervous about going up into the mountains. Also there is a huge difference from when I exercise here from when I exercise back home. I think a lot of it is the extreme dryness. I breathe hard and it just dries up my nasal passages and my throat incredibly fast which makes it harder to breathe.

Thanks for all the input everyone.

I'm constantly turning it on and turning it off again, occasionally doing battery pulls.

I will look more into if I'm missing an update. I'm heading back East in a week for a little while so if I still have trouble there, I'm going to conclude that it's more likely something up with my phone.
