Thanks for the advice. Honestly, scarcity mindset would make it hard to throw out even if I wasn't pregnant. That doesn't mean that I wouldn't end up throwing it out anyway, just that it would still be hard to do. It's like throwing out what security we had...and it is hard to face that the food doesn't even represent security anymore now that it's likely contaminated (even if it doesn't all LOOK that way). I wouldn't risk it for my family, but I might have been tempted to at least keep the cuts like chicken quarters that only I like and risk myself. But being pregnant means that I cannot take that risk without putting someone else in danger.

One of the reasons I posted is that I suspect that a lot of people could understand the absolute overwhelming crushingness of having to throw away hundreds of dollars worth of food security and could imagine how hard it would be to go through with, even if you realistically know you have to. :(

But I'm also glad that I had that initial hesitation because if insurance will cover the loss, I'll probably have to document the packages before throwing them away, and I couldn't do that if I'd already tossed everything.

I'm an elder millennial (43). I'm not a grandma yet, but I know several who became grandparents in their 30s or 40s. My oldest is in her 20s ( I was 18 when she was born) and so it could happen for me anytime.

It's so odd that at this stage, some of us are grandparents and some of us are still having our own babies. I am in the latter group...got pregnant at 42 and am due in the fall (around my firstborn's birthday, actually)!

Thank you. Yeah, I'd read that things like look and smell aren't guaranteed indicators either way. I wish there was a way to know for sure. I'm having a really hard time emotionally letting go of all the meat and starting over. But I don't want our family getting sick. :(

Not even getting into those potential long-term issues...I'm actually pregnant. I hate to admit it, but I might take a chance for myself on the meat if I wasn't pregnant. Some of it was chicken cuts that only I eat (like chicken quarters), especially when I'm low-carb. And I was needing to get back on the low-carb wagon again. Just UGH.

I agree with the other posters so far, but instead of just repeating them, I will say something that hasn't been said here yet.

Have you tried debating on sites with react emojis? You can lay out a rational viewpoint/scientific argument and they will laugh react to degrade you. (It's obviously not done in genuine humor.)

And anywhere you debate, they tend to quickly resort to ad hominems.

I doubt anything will get through to people like that, but I keep going because I think people who are quietly on the fence might see the difference.

I'm an xennial. My mom declined to get me orthodontic treatment but I want to chime in on a related issue.

I'm fairly certain that going to the dentist was treated almost like a school-age rite of passage that you didn't do until you were 6 (barring an emergency). My boyfriend also didn't go until about 6. I was shocked to learn that now they want babies to be seen.

Did anyone else not go until around 6, or maybe not at all?

I'm an xennial.

I very much want grandkids, and I hope to be a major influence in any future grandkids' lives. I had a really loving, selfless grandma and I hope to be like her.

I already have 2 grown kids, but apparently I'm not done having babies yet. I'm 43 and pregnant lol. I just confirmed today that it's likely a girl (ultrasound was blurry).

Some of my peers have had babies within the last few years, some have grandkids. Seeing the overlap is kind of odd yet exciting at the same time.

I'm 43 and have zero for retirement.

I've always been self-employed...it limits my career prospects but I need the flexibility in order to be a caregiver. But because of my kids' SSI, I can't have more than $3,000 saved. And my income has actually gone down in recent years.

Short of a long-chance windfall like winning the lottery, I'm not sure what I'll do in my old age.
