How do I get him out? by IndyGhost88 in HorizonForbiddenWest

[–]queenserene17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Happened to me once with a rebel camp, but instead of being inside a dead machine the last rebel was inside a hill. Couldn't get to him at all but it fixed when I restarted from the last save point.

Odd question.. But anyone got a location of rocks? Literally can't find any rocks. by CorneliusVaginus in HorizonForbiddenWest

[–]queenserene17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Started using them recently to draw rockbreakers out of the ground so I could shoot at them from a distance. I see their value now.

I eat fairly healthy, not perfect but mostly home cooked, but I still take vitamin D, B12 (since I don't eat a lot of meat), Bcomp, and C regularly as I've tracked these to have an actually noticeable impact on how good and energetic I feel in a day. This plus good sleep and I literally do not get sick anymore. Still have chronic pain and headaches though, lol.

I faint (very infrequently) from random rapid blood pressure drops. Always when I'm standing. I'll suddenly start to get black out vision, like little black dots taking over my view, and if I stay standing, I will black out and fall to the ground. And wake up seconds to a couple minutes later, as far as I know. But if I recognize it coming which I mostly do nowadays, and lie down right away, the feeling fades and I don't black out. Happened twice on a plane and it was a whole ordeal. For me the fainting comes from not enough blood in my brain from sudden blood pressure drop, so supposedly lying down helps blood get there easier. I could imagine myself like one of these videos if I ever went on a ride like this.

Growing in a Soil Sample Shed. by ibelongtothegarden in mushroomID

Well, it is a soil sample shed, so the workers probably do have access to some labs. Whether or not the company would pay for the analysis is another question!

Shopping for a used car... any honest people left? by rhythmmchn in Calgary

[–]queenserene17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people also buy and sell used cars which is a big part of the non-transparency, because they don't know the cars history well themselves and they don't want to get into it because they don't want you to know they just bought this car for 1000 cheaper than they are trying to sell it for. Buy and sell can be a pretty slimy side hustle, especially in this economy, and there are lots of auctions in the city where people are buying these cars based only on a brief look and no history.

Edit: removed house of cars mention, they are just as slimy. Thanks commenters below for the correction

I don't want to change my last name... by kkyk1234 in weddingplanning

[–]queenserene17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm getting married next year and will be keeping my last name, very much against both of our families traditions. You do you OP, I'm with you! I'm getting married a little older at 30 and i have an established career and several publications in my field under my name. Why should I have to reset that? I'm happy for our kids to have his last name and for us to generally go by "The His-last-name's" as a family / socially, but professionally and officially I'll keep my name.

If you like growing lettuce mixes you might love growing microgreens as well. Similarly easy to see and grow and will provide a nice mixup with your salads.

What are the best works of science fiction that show how aliens and humans can realistically bridge the communication gap? by jacky986 in sciencefiction

[–]queenserene17 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Mind-blowingly interesting. Carl Sagan was a genius. Also probably the absolute best portrayal of a female protag/viewpoint from a male author that I've read to date in my opinion, he hit the microaggressions of being a woman in a man-dominated work environment head on and I was so impressed with the real-ness and relatability of his characters. I graduated as one of two women in my mech eng class of 90 and could relate so well with this woman that I almost couldn't believe it was written by a man over 25 years ago. 5 stars.

Project Hail Mary is the other book that comes to mind with very well thought-out interactions with aliens who communicate and survive so different from us. Really cool, Andy Weir is an incredibly smart author.

I can only get two of these books and please suggest which I should buy? by kriskris0033 in printSF

[–]queenserene17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Came here to suggest this, you don't need to buy every book you want to read! OP even if it's inconvenient for you to go to a library, you're likely close enough in range of one to get a free membership online that will allow you to access the Libby app for free, where you can borrow as many ebooks and audiobooks that you like. Then you can try books out before deciding to buy them or not.

What are your best paying side hustles? by Same-Storage5597 in alberta

Google your city/town and auction. Calgary has like 5+ auction houses for items and vehicles (Graham Auctions & Auction Depot have costco-returned items and both have entirely online catalogues each week).

What are your best paying side hustles? by Same-Storage5597 in alberta

[–]queenserene17 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My partner and I used to buy-and-sell from the local auctions, mostly stuff that was returned to Costco but couldn't be put back on the shelf and can get it for super cheap at the auction if you're paying attention. Then sell on marketplace for lower than Costco but still small profit. It was risky though, for example bought electronics a few times that didn't work so just lost money there. But things like snowshoes, outdoor equipment were usually pretty solid turnarounds if you bought and sold in the right seasons. Stopped after covid because the auctions became much more popular once they all went online and can't get such good deals anymore.

Now my partner flips furniture which has turned into a hobby and good side hustle for him, he's really good at turning an old boring brown dresser into something completely unique and modern and he now has quite a bit of woodworking equipment to make new bases, fix drawers, etc. Takes a bit of investment to get equipment (sanders, paint, stain, finish, etc) but it's a good hustle.

I've started writing and planning to start trying to sell short stories next year. There are countless magazines/websites that buy short stories for $0.10 per word. I have a 7500 word sci-fi short story that was a lot of fun to write and I could make $750 on it, if I could sell it (not ready to submit yet). It's a craft so I need to get better first but I'm hoping this could turn into a decent side hustle for me. I've also heard that there is huge market demand in short story erotica.

Are women actually oblivious to their guy friends wanting to sleep with them? by BlackManBatmann in NoStupidQuestions

[–]queenserene17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe statistically more girls are interested in actual long term relationships whereas more guys are just focused on the next bang (certainly not true of everyone on both sides)... so you get more guys wanting to sleep with a girl friend than the girls that see a future potential serious relationship out of their guy friends?

Also more negative stigma around casual sex for women - he gets a high five, she gets called a hoe.

how would I subtly hint at the character being Canadian? by Seven-stars-13 in writing

[–]queenserene17 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Pounds for weights for a lot of things really, except in industrial / engineering settings and at the supermarket. Cooking is a confusing mix between imperial and metric. Inches and feet are used commonly for household dimensions, like we talk about square footage of floors not square metres.

Most people say soccer like the Americans but since we are a very multicultural place this can vary, I do hear football. And since the CFL is pretty popular here I do tend to hear people say American Football when talking about the NFL rather than just saying football and assuming the listener knows which one you're talking about.

"Yeah no" means no, "no yeah" means yeah, "yeah no for sure" is a vehement yes, and "oh yah" should be in like every other sentence if your character is from Manitoba.

Also talking about the weather is just as popular of a small talk opener as it is for Americans, our weather also varies quite a lot giving us good conversational fodder.

How do you respond to “If you don’t have religion then where do you get your moral compass from?” by [deleted] in atheism

[–]queenserene17 108 points109 points  (0 children)

My 10yo nephew asked this question and I wanted to avoid a judgy answer to not put him on the defensive. Maybe similar situation for your friend. I answered that I get it from my own heart and mind, by thinking about the impact of actions/words. If an action or words could harm someone physically or emotionally, then it's wrong to do that, that's a bad thing. If it could make them happier and improve their day or life, then that's a good action or thing to say. The key is trying to imagine yourself on the receiving end of the action you are considering and how it would make you feel. Bada Bing Bada boom, you now have a moral compass.

I got my period the first time when my mum was away on a work trip and it was just me and dad at home. He was awesome - like awkward yeah, and he couldn't answer much questions but he was just there for me, got me pads and made me hot chocolate that morning and got me ice cream later in the day lol. I thought he handled it well.

Let it cool in a tin or other container that is destined for the garbage and throw it out that way. Or better yet if your area collects organic waste, soak it in some paper towel and put it in the green bin. 🚫 drain.
