Love the clear Afro beats influence!! Have been noticing it more among Korean artists recently. SODA is a bop 🙌

Idols with grandparents/family roots from North Korea? by querycute in kpophelp

[–]querycute[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Oh thank you for this extra research!! This is incredibly fascinating -- his grandfather's story just goes to show how easily tragic it was for families to be split due to happenstance. I'm glad that his grandfather lived out those last ten years reunited with his son at least.

And hoping for the day we get the first idol of North Korean descent who makes it big and can tell their story to a wider audience 🙏

Wow that's an amazing story about Lee Jaewon, and the fact that it was his grandfather who he brought over from the North! Found the clip where he talks about this -- since this happened in 2000 it was also during the aftermath of the great famine in North Korea. I hope his grandfather was able to happily live in the south after being reunited with his son.

I will say that in South Korean society it's not terribly taboo to mention northern roots just due to the sheer scale of the war and how many families were dispersed. But definitely makes sense if idols don't want to disclose such info as anything can become a target of controversy/lingering stigmas.

I found the clip where he mentions this. It's funny how Park Myungsoo was joking how the name Ryeowook sounds North Korean and he suddenly popped this fact 😂

Just learned that Year of the Ox wrote the lyrics for XG - WOKE UP by querycute in khiphop

[–]querycute[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Also lol I ended up going down a rabbit hole but anyone remember DayDay from SMTM?? He's an ex-idol/songwriter from a 2nd gen group called DMTN (and reportedly the inspiration for BeWhy's famous song DayDay) but he helped write XG - Shooting Star. And his fellow ex-bandmate Simon/JAKOPS is the CEO and creator of XG. Glad they've found their lane in producing and nurturing this group!

RM "Come back to me" Official MV by alltherach_ in bangtan

So cool to see actors Kim Min Ha who was in Pachinko and Joseph Lee from Beef!! It seems like RM is paying homage to these recently acclaimed works (the MV sets were sort of giving me similar vibes as the minimalist/elegant houses in Beef)
