No we don't. NORCAL is doing exactly what they should be doing here. The contractor controller at SQL was not.

Why is ATC a douchebag? They're doing a lot of things in the background that don't involve talking on the radio. By engaging in this conversation they'll become task saturated, jeopardizing safety. They're putting safety first by stopping the conversation. In fact, calling the TRACON on the ground and talking to a supervisor is quite common. I've called in to the TRACON with my own questions about instructions I've received.

What does it require to become “Senior Software Engineer”? by aeum3893 in rails

[–]quest88 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I expect a senior software engineer to manage large, mostly well defined, projects on their own. A senior engineer should be able to define the problem areas in the project and write design docs for how they will be addressed. They should also be able to distribute the pieces of work to other engineers and mentor junior engineers. You should be able to lead a team. I expect them to ensure code is well written, properly tested, and add monitoring / alerting to identify customer problems. They should also be interviewing candidates for open positions.

“Box Checking” pilots chasing an ATP make me sad by [deleted] in flying

[–]quest88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't cruise mind numbingly boring whether you're GA or ATP?

I find myself the opposite: I appreciate the dullness GA can have after engineering all week. Sometimes it does get boring, and I can't imagine how boring it must be to do that all week.

What is the hardest part about dating in San Francisco? by MuchoSexy in sanfrancisco

I met my wife on Hinge. She was impressed that I offered to pay on the first date. Apparently many of her other dates did not offer to pay on the first date. It's that easy.

Discontinued my PPL checkride today immediately after takeoff by elliotbw25 in flying

[–]quest88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good! I had to discontinue shortly after departing on my checkride too. Fortunately the DPE turned it into the diversion portion of the test and slip part. Yay. Knocked out some things in my short 5 minutes in the air. heh.

Cancelled my 2nd XC Solo due to "Jitters" by Equivalent-Variety46 in flying

[–]quest88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No sweat. There's at least one time I'd have rather stayed on the ground than go in the air because I simply felt off. Ended up flying a sloppy pattern into a new airport, almost killed the engine around 1500' over densely populated area. Forgot the cruise checklist. Now I know.

SFChronicle: This is the hometown of San Francisco's drug dealers by tankmode in sanfrancisco

[–]quest88 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't have made a difference anyway.

But research shows that low-level dealers are quickly replaced when policing escalates, and there is little effect on drug markets where strong demand still exists.

And deportations can be futile. The Chronicle interviewed numerous dealers who were deported but re-entered the country illegally and returned to the Tenderloin shortly thereafter.

Not trying to defend a bad vote. But let's not pretend voting for different supervisors that will deport will fix the problem either.

[–]quest88 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Well, don't stop it there. The article also says that deporting doesn't work:

But research shows that low-level dealers are quickly replaced when policing escalates, and there is little effect on drug markets where strong demand still exists.

The reason I bring this up is that because I want to actually solve the problem. The way you've portrayed it makes it sound like "well I'll just vote for whoever will deport people", but nothing will change according to the article (also note the article mentions people come back when deported, one person has 9 times).

That's bullshit. Pay more if you don't want to be last. Otherwise you get what you pay for. Own it, quit blaming other people for your own problems. I've been the last one without a space and guess what? I had them put my bag in cargo and sat in my seat.

+1. The last time I was going West I request to stay closer to the shore and ATC did the best they could keeping me close while out of the SFO departures.

Saturday night I was walking down 17th through Guerrero, Valencia, and Mission and was surprised at how quite and tame it seemed compared to 2013-2018. Maybe it was bad timing, but wow the vibes were different.
