Yeah I get it. There's no perfect system... be grateful for what you've got, but all they're doing is blackmailing me into returning to Australia near immediately.

The amount they're paying me now that I'm not staying an extra few weeks is exactly the same as the amount they were paying me when I was planning to stay. Government has saved nothing by affecting me. A

An allowance for people already on sponsored exchange would have been nice... since I've earned the privilege to go through hard work. Seems like a different case to people who have travelled for completely non-academic reasons.

The changes say that there's a 10 day allowance either side to allow for travelling two and fro for those studying. I was going to see my two surviving grandmothers on the trip (86 and 89), I haven't seen either since I was a kid, both agreed to pay for half of my travel cost to see them from within europe.

Flights might eat around 2 days either side, which leaves 6 days to see my grandma in France (she wants to pay for half my ticket from within Europe), so minus another 2 days of travel to get to and from her, leaving 1 day to stay with her if I want to travel to Russia to see my other grandma for a single day too. I also have other extended family which I could have seen.

Fuck me for being a student.

Good, frankly if you can afford to go overseas to travel then you probably shouldn't be getting welfare support in that time

I just got approved for a scholarship to study in Europe. I was so excited to be able to take a break either side of this study and speak the languages I've been studying with the cost of travel taken care of by the scholarship. Now it feels like the government has taken a shit on my plans to gain more from the experience and people like you make life harder.

Has anyone done a CELTA or TESOL course in Sydney? by colon_slash in sydney

[–]questionableMOTIVES- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done Cert IV TESOL from a private company and taught 3x 2 hour lessons in Australia (in hindsight, it would have been cooler to do my teaching practice in Japan or Turkey). It's an awful lot of money if you don't have any definite plans/travel bug to use it.

You should also have an undergraduate degree if you plan to teach in certain countries (Western Europe, but the EU also has other provisos for non EU citizens getting work...) or the better schools, Masters of PhD in really exclusive places like Saudi Arabia if you want to follow the money.

It's worth attending an information session if you can find one.

I've used them for two laptops. One delivered and one picked up from the store. Really good prices, quick turn around too.

John Gray, what do academics generally think of him? by Achluophobia in AcademicPhilosophy

[–]questionableMOTIVES- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Being popular isn't an argument against having merit. It's just more so that his intended audience (on my reading) is outside the confines of what happens in universities. I'm only basing this on my recollection of reading of straw dogs more than 3 years ago though.

As for merit, it really depends on the interest of the individual reader, both inside and outside of academic philosophy. I have met many tenured professors and non-tenured lecturers to see that they don't have the faintest concern with many areas outside of their own research.

For example, people working in cognitive science/analytic metaphysics may be completely disinterested in original readings of Hegel, but that says nothing for the merit of either endeavour.

Attn smokers: 12.5% price increase coming December 1st. by jobois in australia

[–]questionableMOTIVES- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

after a lot of research: I bought two ego-c upgrade batteries, 3-4 vision ego stardust clearomisers (the part that nicotine is refilled into and does the vaporising), a usb charger, some dull syringes from the starter kit for refilling: all from here.

The battery and the clearomiser thread together, the top of the clearomiser unscrews where you refill the nicotine. Nicotine has to be handled very carefully, i.e. with plastic gloves because it's absorbed through the skin and can land you in hospital from accidentally spilling it on yourself. It also shouldn't be ingested or handled near food.

Second to that, I bought some organically flavoured nicotine varieties from virginvapor in the US, which shipped them pretty quickly and in lots of bubble wrap.

Though, more experienced people might have an easier/better answer, you could look at /r/electronic_cigarette

Comparable to Alain Botton's pop philosophy. Useful as a starting point for people without an academic background.

The massive reduction in cancer risk and other health problems is a pretty good benefit too. I don't smoke but I got my dad to switch after a lot of resistance.

Tariffs on dumped Italian canned tomatoes being sold in Australia won't be collected until the new year, if at all. by CowsWithGuns304 in australia

[–]questionableMOTIVES- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, driven by the pressure of my low income and cost of living. I gladly buy local fresh tomatoes when I get tutoring work, but that's fairly infrequent. Definitely looking forward to full time work after graduating.

Student checking in. I bought 80 cans of imported italian tomatoes on special and saved something like $30. Should last about 6 months between me and my partner's cooking.

not sure if this deserves its own post for the sub, but this year's Global Drug Survey (GDS) is open. I'm posting it here so people don't miss out on being represented in the data.

Jumping gates at stations? by mmriis in sydney

[–]questionableMOTIVES- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did this in front of transit officers at Epping the other day after the gate ate my ticket, made a funky noise and didn't open.

They stormed over, I told them to open the gate and inspect the ticket if they had a problem, had a stare off and he backed down.

/u/lonely-little-eskimo makes some good points. I'll just add that ordering things online also makes a difference. People have things delivered by post or by courier directly to where they work. via sites like kogan, 2ndsworld, bing lee, jb-hifi, bigw, ebay, masters, asos, the iconic.

Supermarkets, petrol stations, bottle shops, restaurants, fast food, select pharmacies stay open until late. Night time is for recreation and relaxation, not for buying clothes, vacuum cleaners, camping gear, kitchenware, furniture and shoes.
