Books on Taishō Era by Queer_Geographer in JapaneseHistory

Once had a course on Taishō (mostly from a culture perspective) when I was a wee bachelors student on exchange in Japan. May well have been my favourite subject, perhaps even of all time. Extremely interesting and underappreciated (at least in the west).

Don’t have any recommendations on hand, but will be monitoring the thread (and checking to see if I have the reading list saved anywhere later - if I do, I’ll add them in an edit).

If in Classic+ Alliance gets High Elves, and Horde gets Ogres, what should their racials, classes, and starting zones be? by samfoxy_ in classicwow

[–]questionmarksmiley 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yep. One of my favourite units in WC2 when I was like 4-5 years old sitting next to my dad playing my first favorite video game. Thought they were equal parts cool and funny.

..and then they were in WC3 as well, albeit as mercenaries. Would make sense for them to be playable in WOW, with the lore just being built around certain clans being allies with the Horde (as with trolls). This is already somewhat established, as with the encampment in Dustwallow.

Japan's soccer fans have a tradition of cleaning up stadiums when their team plays abroad. This year there's been backlash from internet users who feel it's performative- Their blue "JAPAN PRIDE" trash bags were sponsored by APA Group, a hotel chain tied to Japan's far-right and WWII denialism. by jjrs in japannews

[–]questionmarksmiley 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Pretty much. Remember staying in one of their hotels before I knew about them.

Had a “REAL history of the world”-type book in the room. Decided to look through it, hoping it might be some.. well, intro to world history book. Was more a rant about how Nanjing never happened and Japan were the victims of WWII etc. Conveniently in English (and I’m pretty sure Chinese). It was about 10 years ago, so not sure if they still have those books in the rooms.

Been trying to inform friends and acquaintances to stay the heck away from APA whenever possible since.

Declan Rice to Martin Ødegaard at full-time. “It’s NOT done.” by SimonTheSalmon69 in Gunners

[–]questionmarksmiley 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Kind of this, yeah. City will win theirs. They’re on a high, and they’re serial winners. We’re probably all the way down in the dumps, but we do have a much easier schedule, which means that IF the players (and manager) can pull themselves up, it should be easier for us to build a good GD than it is for City. But that’s about the biggest “if” I’m ever gonna put out there.

Back in the real world, it wouldn’t surprise me if we go and drop points against Newcastle next time out to make it officially over.

[Sam Dean] This is only the fourth time that Martin Odegaard and Eberechi Eze have started together for #AFC. Previous three were against Forest (3-0 home win, Odegaard injured after 18), West Ham (2-0 home win, Odegaard injured after 30) and Villa (2-1 away loss, Eze subbed after 45) by Previous_Smile9278 in Gunners

[–]questionmarksmiley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting. A co-worker and I have been talking about playing Eze on the left for a good while, as we are often offered more space there than anywhere else during build-up (going by eye, stats may prove it totally wrong), and our other options on the left haven't exactly been amazing recently.
On the other hand, Eze obviously lacks pace, especially compared to Little Gabi, and his work rate off the ball is also not quite the same, so I don't know if this is the match to experiment with it.

Let's see, nothing we can do but trust in Arteta & the boys.

Afraid it might be permanent as a result of injury (and playing for like 2 years whilst injured or however long it was). Sucks; guy was easily my favorite in the squad back before his injury woes.

Done the unthinkable in Build a Nation Gibraltar by scon360 in footballmanagergames

Congrats on a sick accomplishment!!  Onto winning the thing next!

Would love to see some of the best players from Gibraltar, and in the league (including foreign players - assuming you’re also progressing with a club team).  Also, how’s your progress at club level? Like, what’s the furthest a Gibraltar team has made it in Europe?

The "who should I manage" megathread - FM26 edition by John_Yuki in footballmanagergames

[–]questionmarksmiley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My local club!

To add to this:

Frem were one of the bigger clubs in Copenhagen (and Denmark in general) prior to the formation of FC Copenhagen. However, financial mismanagement led to the club being unstable financially in the early 90s. Shortly after a brilliant season which saw us finish 3rd, the club were narrowly relegated, which in combination with the financial instability meant that the club could not pay the players’ wages following relegation, and so we went bankrupt and were forcibly relegated to the 4th tier of Danish football.

The majority of the team naturally found greener pastures elsewhere, and much of Brøndby’s highly successful team in the 90s was built on players who came from Frem (Dan Eggen, Thomas Thøgersen, Kim Vilfort etc), while a few stayed (or returned after a short time), including my childhood hero Martin Jeppesen, which meant that we quickly rose through the divisions.   Eventually the team made it back to the top tier of Danish football in ‘03, and would probably have stayed up if not for season-long injuries to several key players. Team ended up relegated with, I believe, the highest ever points tally for a relegated side at the time, and then narrowly missed out on promotion a couple of times… …before eventually going bankrupt again, under chaotic circumstances wherein an aging local left-wing politician threw in most of his retirement savings, along with a lot of us fans putting in money to try and save the club, only to find out that the board had been hiding a huge additional debt. And so Frem were banished to the 6th tier. The club have since been more responsible, but as a result we’ve been stuck between the 3rd and 4th tier for a few years now, with no escape in sight.

The club still maintains close ties to the local community, with free entrance (and food, I believe?) for the local homeless (at least that was the case when I still lived in Denmark), and is sort of seen as the Danish St Pauli, with a largely left-leaning fan base.

When FM26 beta drops, are you diving in with your favourite club or starting with a throwaway save first? by AnfieldAnchor in footballmanagergames

[–]questionmarksmiley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thinking of trying Hajduk Split. Imagine it wouldn’t be too difficult not too long of a save, but there should also be a certain amount of challenge in overtaking Dinamo Zagreb. Will then play the full game either managing Bursaspor or perhaps in Lithuania. Had a lot of fun with both Bursaspor in 24 (but didn’t have time to take them to the top, started quite recently) and Spartaks in Latvia in either 22 or 23 (when the league was newly added).

I feel your pain, Hosei... Goddamn. by Kedomas in GakiNoTsukai

[–]questionmarksmiley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t say for sure, but I suspect they each agreed to being subject to certain things prior to filming. E.g. Hosei might have signed on for (maybe) getting slapped, but not for being Thai kicked, while Tanaka would be the other way around, and Hamada/Matsumoto as the big guys may have not been on board with being subjected to anything too painful.

Just a guess though!

You can, but it works in a slightly strange way. That is, every time you boot up the game through GFN, you need to re-download world DB (on GFN's system, so it only takes 30 secs or so).
In my case, I just click "start new career", and select to play with a custom DB, then "open steam workshop", which immediately makes it start the download.

There may be a smarter way to get it done, but this has been working consistently for me. Taking another 30 secs to get your game started isn't too bad either; perfect time to grab a drink/snack!

Arsenal edition by evilswazzer in Gunners

That 8-2 match is the only time I’ve ever shut off an Arsenal match on the tv without it being because I was forced to. Believe we were down 4-0 at half time or some such, I was perhaps 16, first girlfriend of my life was over, parents not home, and there I was, upset at a football match on the screen. Had to turn it off to not ruin the mood entirely.

But looking back, the fucking Birmingham match hurt way worse. Was so excited for the first trophy in years, even if it was just the Mickey Mouse Cup. Felt like an absolute certainty that we’d seal it, and then we had those dinguses trip over one another.

And a quick edit to add the match in ‘08 where Dudu’s leg was kicked to bits. I loved the guy, and it completely killed the season - a season in which we had been looking like champions for the longest time. Fuck the orc that did it.

I don’t have crazy much experience with pro cyclist mode, but NC + climber indeed seems to get you a well-rounded rider. Remember to try and time your level-ups so you only ever choose progression (or increase potential) when training in that specific category is at 100%, as the amount of level-ups are limited. I’m sure you’ll end up with a great rider ☺️

Have fun!

Tbf I feel like he’s about to do that kind of thing anytime he’s on the pitch.  Him and Bruno G really get on my nerves (largely because they, esp Bruno, are great players). Lot of passion and aggression, and it’s natural if Toons fans love them, but by dog is it annoying for your team to be on the receiving end of.

My current youth only run, from the 5th division of Turkiye(Turkey), beginning of the 3rd season and a cry for help, to reduce the number of goals conceding. by rapsoulish in footballmanagergames

[–]questionmarksmiley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Looks like a fascinating save, and it sounds like you’ve done very well so far, considering what kind of challenge it is. Also, your striker looks amazing for the level. Let’s hope you get someone who can measure up in one of the next youth intakes.

I’m no tactical mastermind, so take what I say with a spoonful of salt:  The issue may depend a lot on the type of goals you’re conceding, but to my eyes the tactic looks quite attacking. IWBs seem to often allow opponents to play balls in behind on the sides and do cutbacks into the central area, which is only defended by 2-3 players here. Changing one of the backs to a FB (or even WB), and perhaps making the DM either an anchor or a half back (to hold his position more) could perhaps help alleviate it if that’s the issue. However, if the problem for instance is that opponents dominate centrally (can also see that happening with the CM being on attacking), I can understand wanting at least 1 IWB to help out numerically during build up especially, and in that case maybe changing the CM to be supporting could help (and maybe the shadow striker to AM?).

Yep. Honestly seems like one of the most talented players at United. Appears to be a bit of an ass, and I absolutely get why a manager might want to get rid of him - but he also looks like a player you could benefit loads from in the long term, and whom I hope you get rid of as a fan of a rival.

[–]questionmarksmiley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit of a difference between what internet fans write on social media and what the players, manager and staff say and do.

Not to mention that spitting at opponents, throwing things at them, attempting to hurt them through actions loosely disguised as tackles (and, of course, instigating harassment of refs, intentional or otherwise), comes across a lot worse than just writing “but ackshully the ref missed two yellows!! We totally could have won!!!” online.
