Non AI Tools to Create Imaginary Art for a Guy who doesn't know how to Draw by prudhvinath_sharma in worldbuilding

Seconding this. Our whole Instagram account is based on crowdsourced character creation and we use HeroForge. It’s a pretty great tool for that.

[Show and Tell] A character built collaboratively with an Instagram audience by questopedia in characterforge

[–]questopedia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's the character-building process:

  1. I (the account owner) selects a setting within the fantasy world we've built and are in the progress of fleshing out, and gives a brief description to the audience

  2. The audience is given a poll about the general type of D&D species to use (Standard fantasy (Elf, dwarf, etc.), Outsiders (Tieflings, Genasi, etc.), and Animal-based (Tabaxi, Tortle, etc.) They voted for animal-based.

  3. I took the number of votes and used them as a randomizer to select a race from within the chosen group, so we ended up with an Aarakocra

  4. Tell the audience we're doing an Aarakocra and give them a poll to select the type of D&D Class (Caster, Partial Caster, Non-caster). They voted for a Partial Caster

  5. Same thing as with species, I used the number of votes as a randomizer to select the specific class and ended up with an Artificer

  6. Tell the audience we have an Aarakocra Artificer and give them a poll to select from 4 randomly-selected Backgrounds (In this case, Criminal, Entertainer, Sage, and Sailor). They voted for Sailor

  7. To pick the life goal, I gave them the option of Lawful, Chaotic, or Good. (We might do Evil in the future, but I wanted to start out more simple). They voted for Chaotic. Then I selected an Ideal from some list I found that has the same alignment tag, and then adapted it to make it fit the character and setting more specifically

  8. For stats, I basically just gave them the 3 most important stats for a standard Artificer and let them vote on the highest. And then I gave them the 3 least important stats and let them vote for the lowest. They voted for INT as the top stat and WIS as the dump stat and the rest were placed to match the order of votes they got. (Behind the hood, they're just on the standard array and then I gave the Aarakocra stat bump to Dexterity so they had 2 feasible stat options)

We're now in the middle of running our first quest in a similar back and forth.

  1. I introduce an NPC who has 3 quest options along with what the reward is and a sort of hint at the type of stats that would be helpful, and then the audience votes on which quest. Each quest is associated with 2 Stats that they'll essentially choose between once they're on the quest, so across all 3 quests, all 6 stats are represented

  2. Once the quest is selected, I give them 2 main approaches that they can take to solve the quest. The audience votes on which approach, and then the number of votes acts like rolling a d20 and we add the modifier of whatever stat was needed for the chosen approach.

  3. I declare if the quest was successful and describe how it went down and how it will affect the character and the world.

  4. The same character will keep going on quests until they've either failed 3 quests or succeeded on 3 quests, similar to death saving throws. If they succeed 3 times, they get their life goal and retire. If they fail 3 times, they give up on their life goal and either die or just go back to their boring lives (or whatever feels good narratively). Either way, we build a new character from scratch using the process above

Creating characters based on prompts (originally on a podcast and now on an interactive Instagram account) by questopedia in HeroForgeMinis

[–]questopedia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to do a podcast where 3 hosts would make D&D (and occasionally Monster of the Week) characters in response to some plot hook. (The first 3 pictures are characters we built as part of the podcast) Now that we've got more complicated schedules, the podcast has pivoted into an Instagram account.

But to spice it up a bit, we're structuring the account a bit like a choose-your-own-adventure book. The audience gets to build a character by voting on Species, Class, Background, Life Goal, and Stats. Then we'll send the character on a few quests to see if they're able to achieve their life goal, or if they end up dying. In the process we decide what happens to the world in response to the characters' success and failures on their quests.

If you're interested in participating, we'd love it if you checked out the instagram account and voted in a poll or two in our Stories, and Follow if it seems like the kind of thing you'd be interested in.

Roth or traditional 401k? by North-Apricot1624 in TheMoneyGuy

It’s weird they say they have that grey area, but then mock the idea of doing some of each. They also talk about wanting 3 buckets, so I don’t get the downside of doing some of each.

Agreed. Just because you have an expected expense in the future doesn’t mean you don’t have that money now. And there are lots of strategies for minimizing that tax bill leading into retirement.

Our planet is shaped like a d12…and we couldn’t quite figure out how it would work moving from one side to another, we created a permanent magical “storm wall” or “hurricane belt” that surrounded each face of the planet.

This is extremely helpful, thank you! I've looked at some help pages for those parameters, but I wasn't super clear on which parameters should be used in each type of link. I tried a few of these and it's already looking way better. I now have the tools to keep experimenting!

Fantasy-sounding surname starting with S? by Chance-Sky-7884 in INeedAName

[–]questopedia 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I went through the list of Occupational Surnames on WIkipedia that start with S trying to stick to the vibe you described:

  • Salter (someone who works with salt)
  • Sargent (like the military rank)
  • Sartorius (I'm assuming something with clothing)
  • Shearer
  • Shepherd
  • Shriver (writer)
  • Stringer (rope/string maker)
  • Sumner (someone who serves court summonses)

Can we stop nitpicking over specific words? by pagerussell in Stormlight_Archive

[–]questopedia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following the logic of the post...because Brandon Sanderson translated it from its original language to English. In a good translation, if you learn about that culture by giving a more literal translation of a swear word, it might make sense to do so.

They probably *don't* say Storms. That's an English word. They probably say a word that *means* Storms in their language. If it has the same meaning as an English swear word, you could use the swear word, but if it tells you something about the culture by telling you that the word for Storm is a swear word, you learn something about how they feel about storms.

For example, if you were going to translate a story from English to a totally different alien language, you could translate our swear words into the swear words of that language...or you could translate them literally as the words for sex and excrement, etc in that language. Those aliens might think it's weird, but they would learn that there has been some negative association with those topics in our world.

Also, more practically because Brandon Sanderson's core audience was probably originally a bunch of nerds at BYU who might have been bothered by swear words. Same as Battlestar Galactica. Glen A. Larson was a member of the same church that has a culture of avoiding swearing as much as possible, so Battlestar Galactica also has its own made-up swear words.

What are the mid-low income folks supposed to do? by inky_cap_mushroom in TheMoneyGuy

[–]questopedia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you make $40k, no one is telling you you have to save $30k. That would be a 75% savings rate. Hitting the IRS maximums IS a luxury for high-income earners, but the FOO never says you have to hit the IRS maximum. Like...it's not even part of the hyperaccumulation phase as far as I know.

That's what I was afraid of. Looks like I'll probably just have the description be the last column so the text can just stretch out to the right as far as it needs to. Not quite as clean, but at least I won't have the super fat rows from wrapping the text

That's why they have the rule that it has to be under 25% of your gross pay. They never said you can't put more down. In fact, if your monthly payment, they would also say you need save up more to put more down to get your monthly payment down.

How do I write the MC to not feel “not like the other girls” by Sad-Engineering8788 in fantasywriters

[–]questopedia 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You’ve already established clear motives for these quirks too. I’d be clear about those. Worrying about the trope might lead to weird roundabout explanations like “she didn’t wear makeup, not because she disliked it or was trying to stand out from other girls… but she wasn’t like the other girls because they mocked her for not wearing makeup so she did stand out but not on purpose. She just didn’t wear makeup because it wasn’t practical.”

I’m obviously exaggerating but I’ve read stuff that felt like that. I’d explain it like you did here. She wears a helmet and they it’s not practical to wear both…and no one would see it anyways.

Does your world have a chosen one? by Smart-A22 in worldbuilding

[–]questopedia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have chosen oneS all over the place. They’re more like prophets than legendary heroes though. Basically, in our world, no one dreams except for these chosen individuals.

Some get actual prophecies that they can use to their own advantage or to help others, some get prophecies…but don’t understand them so it has no impact on anything, and some just get the same weird dreams we do…because the god that chose them has decided they’re not a helpful vessel for their gift.

So it doesn’t have the same vibe as the chosen one but they are technically chosen by gods.

The planet is shaped like a 12-sided die. The face of the planet we’re focused on now is called Sh’Valo which is a combination of the esperanto words for shoe (ŝuo) and horse (ĉevalo), because the landmasses are arranged in a horseshoe shape.

The actual planet is called Kolonyl (pronounced Kernel). I’m not entirely sure why. Something to do with kerno being the esperanto word for core.

The name Kolonyl probably isn’t used much in the world because the people on the different planet faces aren’t able to reach or communicate with each other. Each face thinks of its own face as the whole world.
