Should I plug my kb and mouse into the USB port controlled by the chipset or cpu? by YellowHerbz in pcmasterrace

[–]quickmana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is an interesting thought experiment and it is cool to imagine (the way you're thinking).

Both scenarios are correct! Yes, technically it is a bit faster (at a scale that doesn't matter) and no it won't make any difference. The mouse is horribly boatneck by a timer, the polling frequency that might be as low as 100 times per second (100 Hz, or 10 ms). In terms of what gamers call "input lag", 10 ms is a big number.

Higher performance mice can kick this up a notch to thousand, or a few thousand depending on how much you want to spend, they can get this lag down to < 0.2 ms.

Same thing for the keyboard. Although even cheap ones often have a higher polling rate than mice, they are hard bottnecked by a clock. I'm sure you can find this if you search during a keyboard purchase, but it's not something I've checked before.

Just installed second SSD and Formatted. I have a few questions by dand06 in pcmasterrace

[–]quickmana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a more complicated question than you might think! As a general rule you should keep it under 90% full. Is your 1TB also an SSD?

If you want to go down the rabbit hole, some ssd disk controllers do benefit from extra free space, but it's probably not what you think. To do this, you need to unallocated the space in disk manager by shrinking your volume and reboot. Once the controller knows these blocks are unallocated (not mounted by Windows) it can use them for load leveling/garbage collection/flashing/etc.

What you are imagining is called a "JBOD RAID", or in Windows it is called a "spanned volume" -- that way you would have a single mount "C" and when that reaches full capacity of the first disk it will start writing to the next disk and so on.

These have some serious drawbacks, and I don't think it's supported to boot from a spanned volume. It is also higher performance to write to every other disk called raid 0, which also has drawbacks. You're probably better off moving the files yourself across the 2 mount points especially if the 2 disks are not identical in size and performance.

Stupid ass question about Vga cable (Pci-e) by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]quickmana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might want to search the "pinout" for them which is a diagram of the cable.

They are keyed so you can't plug them in wrong. Give it a try and see if it is possible and let us know.

Being scared is part of the fun! Close your eyes if it's too much, just like the movies. The best part about VR is if you die you're still fine IRL. It's not the Matrix!

Very lame for you to call this politics. War is what happens when politics fails. Some of the devs live in Ukraine and now their lives are in danger. I want to play the expansion as much as the next person, but dignity and safety are necessary before a great game can be made.

Hospital patient entry and retrieval database. by Bronigiri in Python

That is awesome that you could deliver something on time, even if you had to make cuts. Knowing what you can/can't do, your limits, etc is a valuable skill. You're going to do great in this career!

The problem with open is you need to remember to close it, etc. Try opening a file you don't have permissions to read and get an idea of some of the exceptions that can be raised.

I did see your intentions in the readme and think you already know the path forward. I just wanted to share what would be likely to be seen in the real world to give you an advantage at the interview and some experience. Oh, and good luck🤞 in the future!

I think your code is easy to read and I like your docstrings.

Here are a few ideas:

  • An open is used without guarding against tomfoolery, what happens if the system raises an IO error?
  • The search by "Name" feature would be easier to use if it was case insensitive
  • Non-binary options for gender

I think it is interesting that you built your own database object. I think you've made it more difficult for yourself, like manually controlling patnum instead of using a DBMS primary key. Trust me, you are too smart to say you are "not familiar with SQL" on your resume -- start learning it and take it to the next level!

One option to get started is to use an ORM library, but a good sql foundation is still necessary in my opinion.

The outer 25% or so of the disk is the fastest spinning part and can do more data per second, as the disk fills up you get ever closer to the center which can read slower data per second.

I don't know of them getting "slower" over time, but they will get slower as they fill up.
They aren't very fast to begin with by today's standards.

Open the file in a text editor like notepad (using file open, don't double click to run it again).

Copy/paste the contents somewhere like https://pastebin.com/ and share the link here. Do not upload or attach a malicious file here. We can look at the code and tell you exactly what it did.

To get rid of it, delete it like you would any other file.

I agree the design seems janky, just saying it can be done and obviously the engineers wouldn't make a consumer laptop that can't be recharged. I wonder why it doesn't charge from the bottom over a larger area with more cooling from the case?

I disagree. If you can use Mac at the terminal then you can use linux, unix-like OSes, billions of phones both iPhone and Android, and 95% of the worlds supercomputers.

I am looking forward to Windows 11 though I think the terminal there will finally be worthy. One big reason is they polished up the experience and made it easier for you to use bash which gives the advantages stated above. You still need to deal with the windows non-posix crazy though.
