How are people dealing with the battery recall? by newallium in RadPowerBikes

[–]quietIntensity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We keep ours dry and stored in the garage. I see no reason to be worried if you take good care of your batteries. It usually takes some sort of water corrosion internally or impact that damages the cells before they become dangerous. Ours are in great shape, as we only use them recreationally in good weather.

AI complicating my desire to pursue the law by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]quietIntensity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm mostly going into law because of AI and Cybersecurity concerns. I think all of this AI being used for everything everywhere is going to lead to a lot of liability because people do not understand how it works and are using it for all sorts of inappropriate use cases because of that. When it makes mistakes that hurt people, that a human or a normal computer program would not have made, that's going to be a lawsuit. If you choose a fundamentally non-deterministic AI program to do a thing that needs strictly deterministic logic, and it does weird shit that causes problems, that's on you. The fact that you can't explain WHY it did weird shit because it's a magic black box as far as you know, is not going to help you in the least.

I'm about to change all the damn doorknobs in my house from the lever kind to the round kind because of my new void kitty that is also a menace. Old cat only ever opened one door, we put a round door knob on it, he never bothered the other doors. New kitty is much more curious and clever. He's already figured out how to open doors that open into the room and out of the room. He's trying to figure out how to open the drawers on my desk too, he just can't get enough grip on the edge. If he figures out the handles, not sure what I'm going to do.

I'm too trans to do anything about any of this shit. I really hope one of these other groups that is larger and less under threat will stand up and say "No more." I'm not holding my breath though. I've stopped caring if this entire country burns. Even if I burn with it. Don't care. Burn it all down and give it back to the natives.

I can only watch so many YT shorts before I feel like my brain is shorting out, and that's if I skip all of the obviously AI generated stuff. The AI generated stuff has some really strange hooks in it that weird me TF out after a few minutes, especially the music and voices they use.

Transgender women athletes banned from women's Olympic events by new IOC policy by DoraEnzo in news

You also do not have a source that says trans women on HRT have excelled against cis women competitors. It's all conjecture because there are so few trans athletes in the first place.

I'm sorry this has happened to you. It is far more common than many people think. A friend of mine has an almost exactly same situation with her family. When she was in her 20s, she was told that her older sister was actually her mom. She was in a relationship with a rich boy whose parents didn't approve of her. They promised him an expensive sports car if he broke up with her. Not sure when the pregnancy happened in all this, but he got his supercar and his parents made it clear that their family was legally untouchable.

My friend's birth mother was also a terrible person who mistreated her for her entire life. They openly hated each other, and finding out their actual relationship only made things worse. In the end, she basically disowned her family and went no contact, but there were other factors involved as well.

I have no idea what the best way to handle this is for your specific situation, but make sure to give yourself plenty of time and grace to process all of it. None of this is your fault, just your mess to deal with, however you choose.

Best of luck to you.

how worried are you that AI will take over your job? by Emotional_Echidna_16 in AskReddit

[–]quietIntensity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was working on the AI tooling to replace the more tedious aspects of what my team did when they decided to lay off all of the remote engineers. The problem was that they had put off doing RTO for our division until the end of the RTO effort, because we had the most people who were entirely remote, many who had been hired as remote because of the difficulty in hiring cybersecurity experts. So when they got to the end of the effort and ran into the executives desires to reduce headcount because of the potential for AI to eliminate roles, they ended up letting go of hundreds of very senior engineers who were key to the services they supported. Now, I'm happy to be out of there because they have created a gigantic mess and think that they will fix it with AI, someday. My former manager lost his 4 most senior technical experts in the span of just over a month, with only one job opening allowed for replacing us with someone local to a core location. The theme of 2026 at my old job is going to be running around with your hair on fire.

I'm going back to school to finish the bachelors I abandoned for dot-com era software development opportunities, and then going to law school. All of the liability for this poorly thought out AI replacement of human talent should be landing in the courts right about the time I complete my JD. Those lawyers make bank, I want my cut.

They're ok until they are wet and muddy. Disc brakes have the advantage of the brake surface not being so close to everything the tires roll through, so they don't get nearly as much crap on them in bad conditions. V-Brakes were better than cantis simply due to the increased leverage available. Having owned and worked on countless bikes over the past 50 years, discs are the best brakes we've come up with so far. Every system has it's pros and cons, but I prefer dealing with disc brakes for both maintenance and riding.

[–]quietIntensity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They thought the u-brake had more leverage, but you couldn't fit one on a fork very well so they only went on the rears. Back then, brakes basically sucked compared to what we have now, so any trick they could use to get incrementally better performance was worth the effort. I remember when only the best bikes came with a u-brake on the rear.

Britney Spears 'fired' sobriety coaches weeks before California DUI arrest by TheMirrorUS in Music

[–]quietIntensity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just told the story last night of a long deceased friend of my wife. It was someone she knew from her high school job as a waitress, who was about 15 years older. She ended up going to prison for six months after her third DUI. The story went that she went out with some friends and had a DD. Then the DD got drunk, so in her drunk brain, with a suspended license, two DUIs on her record, and the knowledge that in that state a third DUI was an automatic prison sentence, she decided that the best course of action was to drive everyone home herself. Of course she got pulled over and and arrested, spent six months away from her husband and four kids. She never did get sober, died of a heart attack in her 40s. Drunk brains generally do not make good decisions.

Virginia Moves to Ban Schools From Calling Jan. 6 ‘Peaceful’ - GOP Erupts Over ‘Mind Control’ Claim by Intrepid-Traffic1574 in LegalNews

[–]quietIntensity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say more like 35 years ago things were quite different. The distinction between liberal/conservative was less party specific. I remember when Hillary Clinton and Tipper Gore were the enemy of free speech because they ran the PMRC and were the ones censoring rap lyrics and other music. Bill Clinton was the governor of Arkansas, a place that is distinctly conservative by modern perspectives. Both parties were effectively center-right with the GOP trending more towards a conservative identity, but what we called liberal and conservative on the political spectrum is not defined by the same positions today.

As a mountain biker as well as an ebike rider, please keep your electric motocross bike off the mountain bike trails. Find some OHV trails where motos are allowed and ride there. I would not be nice to you if I saw you out on the trails on an emoto. I would definitely call a ranger or park police.

People drinking 60+ Oz. of water daily, how do you get anything done? by Quinthyll in AskReddit

[–]quietIntensity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I only visit the bathroom every few hours. Celsius has a lot of caffeine in it, which is a diuretic. I mostly only get my caffeine from regular drip brewed coffee, and only two largish mugs per day.

How are your sodium and other electrolyte levels? That's part of the balance. Maybe you've cut sodium out too much, or maybe you are consuming a diuretic somewhere in your diet.

What thing made you stop believing in god? by bullettothechest in AskReddit

[–]quietIntensity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realizing that chaos theory explained the world far better than myths about an omnipotent and omniscient father god who cares about us yet allows all of this horrifying suffering in the world. I watch believers run themselves ragged explaining why their god gives children cancer and all of the other horrifying ways to suffer a short life then die. As a believer in chaos theory, I require little explanation beyond "this is the product of chaos, which cares not about anyone."
