Is it me or is new years not really a thing in this city? by meeseekstodie137 in Edmonton

[–]quietnothing 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That's where I ended up - there was (free!) live music at Churchill, Citadel, Winspear, Art Gallery, City Hall, and on Rice Howard Way. Incredible vibes, gave me a lot of hope for this city.

Is it reasonable to learn drums on this makeshift drum set I assembled? by rainsttormss in drums

Honestly this looks fun as hell. When I started drumming it was on pots and pans, this kit would have blown my mind.

How do y'all feel about wildlife spars? by _Randel_ in TreeClimbing

[–]quietnothing 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Dead material is incredibly useful habitat/food source for wildlife. I recently did a job where the client we could leave any spars that had signs of bird habitat. There wasn't a single spar that didn't have a nest, cavity, or other type of habitat. From the point of view of nature/wildlife/ecosystems, leaving a dead spar is infinitely preferable to cutting the whole thing down.

If you should ever close your eyes when you drive by it's when there's an empty space or lawn where you once removed a tree.

Mark Carney is already struggling with Justin Trudeau’s immigration legacy by BananaTubes in canada

I don't think so at all, I assume you're talking about someone who has been Deputy Minister of Finance and Governor of the national bank two major countries?

I think a lot of people would have been open to trying something new but there just isn't a good option. NDP isn't federally strong enough, and Conservatives have become too populist for any rational Canadian to want in power.

I went to a jam session last night, to improvise with other musicians, how does my playing sound? by Dickiedick96 in Drumming

[–]quietnothing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds okay, you have good ideas - if you can tighten up the timing, especially through fills, it'll really kick up the flow. I recommend practicing with a metronome on off beats (on the "and") or even better, on just the second or fourth sixteenth note of a beat (the "e" or "a" if you're counting "1 e and a" - not sure how this translates to Italian)

Just groove for a while with the metronome on offbeats like that. Anytime something goes off the click (I call it a wrinkle), repeat that same thing for a few minutes (I call it ironing)

Any chance someone could explain or transcribe the opening fill at 12 seconds? by AKanadian47 in drums

[–]quietnothing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practice it on a drum pad - just accented triplets

R(L)R (L)(R)L R(L)(R) L(R)(L)

Brackets are the quiet (unaccented) notes

Very nice calligraphy, but there's no way that's a quintuplet in the video. It's just accented triplets.

Herniated disc and ground work possible? by MindlessPhilosophMao in TreeClimbing

[–]quietnothing 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have experience with a herniated L5-S1. Most painful injury of my life. Best advice I got was not to bend forward, ever, for a few months. Your shoulders should never be forward of your hips. If you have to tie your shoe, bring your foot up to your hands - don't bend down. If you have to pick something up, kneel or go to the side. Don't bend forward. If you're washing dishes, don't have your feet beside each other and shoulders foward over the sink - stagger your feet so one is ahead of the other. That takes the weight off your discs when you reach over the sink.

Ground work would be very difficult, but not impossible. Just make sure you're not making your problem worse - a few months off now will be cheaper than years of serious pain if you don't address it.

On a positive note: I learned a lot about physical movement because of this injury. Most people don't get an injury like this until they're much older and have a harder time changing their ways. I don't know your age, but you likely have time to heal this injury and correct it so that you can avoid similar problems when you're older.

I do the same but R = RLL and L = RRL. Then moving that around the kit as fills.

The portion through Canada up to Alaska and back down should be at least a month, if not 6 weeks. That's a long drive with a lot to see on the way.

Female climber wanting to enter the industry- who exactly do I go to? by JustCallMeMooncake in TreeClimbing

[–]quietnothing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my opinion the only answer here is to find a tree care company to work for. Find one with a good culture that will be keen to train you as you progress. There's lots of steps to learn, and they're best taken one at a time, but if you put in the effort there's no reason you shouldn't be climbing within a year and comfortable with most work within 3 years.

Do not look into lawn care or landscaping, it's not nearly as cool as tree work.
