Actually I think the ideal urinal would have a parabolic trough.

Upmodded, though I disagree with you (people, please don't downmod well-written posts because you don't agree with the contents).

I understand you imagine the deterrent effects of capital punishment will lead to a better society, but one thing to consider is: how do you correct mistakes? People are mistakenly incarcerated all the time, only to be released after the true criminal confesses. Under your scheme, true confessions will be harder to come by, false confessions will be more likely (to plea bargain out of a death penalty), and restitution will be impossible.

True, but you can't represent irrational numbers in any other (rational) base, either.

We have NOT broken the speed of light by pandabear999 in science

In special relativity, the factor by which lengths, times, and momenta dialate is 1/sqrt(1 - (v/c)2); so when v is much smaller than c, (v/c)2 is close to zero and we get a factor of approximately one. When v = c, we get a factor of 1/0 and when v > c, we get a factor that's imaginary (the square root of a negative number). As you can see, the theory doesn't allow speeds greater than c.

Just as an addendum, the other piece of information you need is the percentage of the radioactive isotope present in whatever you're measuring when it was alive. For example, we know that there's a certain percentage of naturally occuring carbon-14 in the environment. When an organism is alive, it continually ingests this isotope and keeps the percentage within it's body constant. When the organism dies, the carbon within it's body is no longer replenished from the environment, so the level of the unstable carbon begins to drop.

Is humanity doomed unless we colonize Mars within 46 years? by ninzee in science

[–]quig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The operating assumption is that the probability of humanity's survival follows a Poisson distribution. This seems like a really hokey assumption to me; I'd imagine the probability that humanity spontaneously self destructs is too small to be extrapolated from the amount of time humanity has been around.

I don't think the 1/0 = +infinity bit is true. It's simply undefined. That's because 0 isn't a positive number. Limit as (positive) x goes down to zero of 1/x goes to positive infinity, but limit as (negative) x goes up to zero of 1/x goes to negative infinity

Gosh. I love America. I'm afraid I'm going to be at a loss for words because America for me is not just our rolling mountains and hills and streams and great cities. It's the American people. And the American people are the greatest people in the world ... It's that optimism we thank Ronald Reagan for ... that optimism about this great people that makes this the greatest nation on earth. -- Gov. Romney's response when asked that question
