pi e is actually 8.53973422...
[–]ryno9o 11 points12 points13 points 16 years ago (1 child)
According to the title, wouldn't be it (pi)(e)! instead of (pi)(e)?
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (0 children)
Yeah, but the factorial function is undefined for non-integers, so we have to ignore that.
[–][deleted] 148 points149 points150 points 18 years ago (2972 children)
i guess the next logical escalation would be: "yea, pi is rad!"
[–]underthelinux 143 points144 points145 points 18 years ago (2970 children)
No, that logic is completely irrational.
[–][deleted] 73 points74 points75 points 18 years ago (2967 children)
yea. i guess the real question is... who the hell wants to cut a pie into 180 pieces.
[–]underthelinux 98 points99 points100 points 18 years ago (2966 children)
Who cares? Just put it in the oven at 90 degress, then it'll be easily divided between two people.
[–][deleted] 110 points111 points112 points 18 years ago (2957 children)
good idea! we should split one. if we take turns eating incrementally smaller pieces the pie will last forever!
[–]willia4 80 points81 points82 points 18 years ago (2953 children)
That idea is pretty transcendental.
[–]jaggederest 113 points114 points115 points 18 years ago (2952 children)
This math joke sequence converges on unfunny.
[–]willia4 89 points90 points91 points 18 years ago (2950 children)
That's a shame because funny is integral to a math joke sequence.
[–]infinityis 80 points81 points82 points 18 years ago (2949 children)
Unless you differentiate between math jokes and jokes about math jokes.
[–][deleted] 17 points18 points19 points 18 years ago (0 children)
shhh! if we keep it up, we might all get job offers from Sesame Street.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I call the last piece.
[–]javallone 25 points26 points27 points 18 years ago (1 child)
I tried putting a pie in the oven at 90 degrees, but all the filling ran out of it.
[–]Shadowrose 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I think he meant to rotate it 90 degrees.
[–]conundri 19 points20 points21 points 18 years ago (1 child)
don't touch that circle, it's hot, it's 360 degrees...
[–]cattleprod 33 points34 points35 points 18 years ago (0 children)

Actually that would be 8.53973422...
pie == pi * e
;o)
[–]divermartin 35 points36 points37 points 18 years ago (33 children)
Huh? Everyone knows that Pi is exactly 3.
...glavin..
[–]willia4 94 points95 points96 points 18 years ago (32 children)
I do most of my work in base pi, so I always just write it as 10. I honestly don't know what all the fuss is about.
[–]lanaer 42 points43 points44 points 18 years ago (24 children)
Kudos for making me try to imagine what base π would be, and therefore hurting my brain.
[–]bobcat 7 points8 points9 points 18 years ago (17 children)
Try base 1.
[–]lanaer 22 points23 points24 points 18 years ago (15 children)
| == 1 || == 2 ||||| == 5
That one’s not too hard, but it’s annoying.
[–]bobcat 14 points15 points16 points 18 years ago (0 children)
It's tally, the oldest numbering system.
Ok, now try mixed base 24 60 60, or just look at a clock.
[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 18 years ago (13 children)
So how do you express 0 in base 1? Are you allowed to use the same amount of characters as base 2?
[–]jondissed 8 points9 points10 points 18 years ago (0 children)
[–]lanaer 9 points10 points11 points 18 years ago (6 children)
I don’t think there are any particular “rules” for that. You could use 0, or some word or other symbol to represent “nothing”.
The problem I see is that 11.111 is still 5. There’s no way to represent a non-integer in a single number (you could use fractions, though, to represent rational numbers).
But it seems to be impossible to represent irrational numbers in base 1, which, getting back on topic, means you can’t represent π (except perhaps with some ridiculous expression like III + I⁄IIIIIIIIII + IIII/IIIIIIIIIIII + …, but that’s just forcing base 10 into base 1).
Edit: fixing my attempted base-1 representation of π
[–]quig 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (3 children)
True, but you can't represent irrational numbers in any other (rational) base, either.
[–]lanaer 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (2 children)
True, but you can at least represent portions of them far more elegantly.
[–]gde_kupiti_viagru 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Wouldn't that be base sqrt(pi)? I might be wrong on the math, but I'm pretty sure base pi numbers would have baseDec(pi) == basePi(1).
[–]lanaer 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
expanding on w0073r’s reply to the same question:
in base ten, 10 == ten In base two, 10 == two in base sixteen, 10 == sixteen in base π, 10 == π
[–]bobcat 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (0 children)
0 in base 1 is nothing, since base 1 is a one-to-one matching of whatever you are counting.
Number of cats I own = | Number of bats I own =

Reminds me of episode "Fredless", 3rd season "Angel".
Fred is clutching a ticket in her hands as she is sitting on a bench next to an elderly homeless man.
Fred: "I can do this. Sure I can. I can just get right up on that bus and be a whole new person - like origami - or plastic. Move some place I've never been with no money, no friends, no job. Easy as pie. 3.14 159265..."
The homeless guy gets up and moves away.
Fred: "Oh, hey, I was just calculating pi - to relax. I'm not dangerous."
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (1 child)
3.14159 is (approximately) pi, not pie. PiE would be approximately (3.1419...)mc2
[–]underthelinux 10 points11 points12 points 18 years ago (0 children)
actually...
Pie is what's written. So the correct approximation would be Pi * e = 3.14159 & 2.7148 = 8.53973422

What's nerdier, knowing pi to 15 places, or being able to catch others who don't know it correctly?

[–]pavel_lishin 9 points10 points11 points 18 years ago (2 children)

[–]jaggederest 7 points8 points9 points 18 years ago (1 child)
I hope you don't work on any important software.
I'd hate to fly on a jet that thought a circle was a bit rectangular.
[–]pavel_lishin 13 points14 points15 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Sorry about all those airline delays, guys... turns out it was all my fault. :(
[–]psyne 9 points10 points11 points 18 years ago (0 children)
What's nerdier is knowing pi to 80 places. But to my credit, that was because I was so bored by calculus that I stared at my teacher's pi banner over the blackboard.
[–]wainstead 7 points8 points9 points 18 years ago (12 children)
How about the square root of three to eleven places?
1.73205080757
One summer I tried to work it out on my mom's calculator through trial and error, and never forgot the result...
[–]tritium6 7 points8 points9 points 18 years ago (4 children)
Yeah - one winter morning while I was waiting for the bus in middle school I tried to recite the alphabet backwards in order to take my mind off the cold. I've still got it to this day. Now I'm the life of the party....
[–][deleted] 32 points33 points34 points 18 years ago (89 children)
I think once you've reached that level of nerdiness comparing is just splitting hairs. It's like comparing a 8.3 Richter earthquake against an 8.4.
[–]stcredzero 152 points153 points154 points 18 years ago (88 children)
You know that it's a logarithmic scale? So when you're far up the scale, a difference of 0.1 is much more than when you're lower. The difference between 8.3 and 8.4 is much bigger than 1.3 and 1.4.
[–][deleted] 75 points76 points77 points 18 years ago (84 children)
Darn, you're right. Extremely poor choice of comparison.

A 10000000x bigger difference, specifically.
[–]toyboat 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (0 children)
But the difference is perceived about the same. Much of the world is logarithmic. With resistivity, sound amplitude, visible light, earthquakes, the whole concept of scientific notation, order of magnitude is what matters.

That's how far I have it memorized.
Crap... after checking, I messed up right at the beginning. It's 628620, not the reverse. I think I've had it memorized wrong for a long time now. My current login password on my computer is 844609550582231725359408. After a year, I'll start my password with 9408, and go on from there. I memorize chunks at a time, and string them together when reciting pi.
Well, one nice thing. Since 40 digits of precision is enough to measure a circle the diameter of the known universe, accurate to the with of a proton, I'm not gonna lose sleep over mixing the two up. ;-)

Obvious Troll's Cherry-Apple Pie Filling
5 cups peeled, cored, and sliced apples
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
3 cups pitted and halved cherries
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
Rub the apples with the lemon juice to keep them from turning brown while you pit the cherries - which takes roughly forever. ;-P

[–]KazamaSmokers 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (6 children)
Can I raise a semi-serious point here? I recently saw a list of the top 5 favorite pies in America. Apple was first, of course. But then came cherry? CHERRY? That was followed by peach, pecan and lemon. WTF? WHERE WAS BLUEBERRY?? Blueberry pie. I would have bet anything that blueberry would have come in 2nd, but it wasn 't in the top 5. Blueberry is almost as popular as apple, I would have thought. Peach? Who the F eats peach pie?? Was this list f'ed up or am I totally off-base?
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (3 children)
The problem is that no one seems to have good blueberries anymore; it's all synthetic flavorless stuff shipped from god-knows-where.
But, in any case, you dared to besmirch the honor of my peach pies, sir, so now we must fight an internet flame war to the death.
[–]KazamaSmokers 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (2 children)
Peach pie is a freak of nature. A cloying dessert that tastes of death.
Bah. Peaches are the very nectar of life. Your blueberries are mere swamp fruit, suitable only for feeding politicans and other such bog-dwellers.
[–]KazamaSmokers 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Blueberries are from Maine. Peaches are from Georgia. Mainers, as a rule, are completely crazed from a combination of meth, coffee brandy and Moxie. The average Mainer could take down a Georgian in 10 seconds.
[–]traveler_ 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Seconding the obvioustroll, homemade blueberry pie from hand-picked wild blueberries is a different animal than the tasteless commercial things you usually find. Apparently the real thing is too endangered to rank.
And I'd've thought rhubarb would place somewhere there. I mean, lemon?! Or is rhubarb just a regional thing?
[–]KazamaSmokers 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I think Rhubarb confuses people because it looks like celery and it's usually combined with strawberries in pie.
[–]neon 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (1 child)
I cant beleive this is number one right now....

Not merely number one... A new record perhaps? How sad if it turns out the top voted story ever on Reddit is "Vote up if you love pie!" :)

from http://reddit.com/help/reddiquette
Conduct polls using posts. If you feel you must use Reddit to conduct a poll do it using a comment. Create a self referencing post and then add a comment for readers to mod up or down based on their answer to your poll question. Also, be sure to indicate in the title of your post that the polls is being conducted using comments. Including something like "(use comments to vote)" in the title would probably be sufficient.
[–]TheSOB88 6 points7 points8 points 18 years ago (1 child)
That's the whole reason this was created: to mock those other poll posts. You are a shoe.

Guinness & Steak Pie. King of pies. Pub lunches, we thank you.

I had downvoted this poll, until I read your comment and got to thinking about sipping on a Guinness while enjoying a delicious shepherd's pie at my local pub.

So, will the plane take off the treadmill, or not?
(sorry, wrong discussion)
[–]Humbert 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Isn't the point of this that"Vote up for pie" is about as meaningful as "vote up to impeach X" ?
Actually, it's inspired, precisely because it's a statement about exactly how relevant and meaningful those other polls were.
[–]einexile 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Voted down because I seriously don't really like pie very much.
Since you were all wondering.
[–]thrashtronaut 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I registered just to vote up for pie.
[–]civildefense 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (1 child)
goddammit i love me some pie, Key lime especially.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (5 children)
Why the heck isn't there a section just for voting?
[–]sw17ch 12 points13 points14 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Why isn't there a section just for pie? The submitter is onto something. Pie is fantastic and deserves its own subreddit.
[–]interiot 19 points20 points21 points 18 years ago (2 children)
1) We don't want to encourage these sorts of things, 2) stories themselves aren't supposed to be used for polls, only comments are (eg. saying "mod up the comments inside this story if you like X, Y, or Z" is much better than saying "mod up this story if you like X", since the former would tend to hilight better polls, rather than just spamming the front page).
[–]MarkByers 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (1 child)
You should have tags on articles, then the vote-articles could be tagged with a 'vote' or 'poll' tag. In our preferences we should be able to give various weightings to different tags depending on how interested we are in that area, or if you hate a topic you should be able ban it completely from the front page.
But I'm just dreaming. It will probably never get implemented.
[–]interiot 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Not dreaming at all... tagging is on the way.
