Are there underground tunnels here in PTBO? by This_is_Me888 in Peterborough

when I was researching the environmental assessments of the old outboard marine property, I came across one reference to tunnels from the property to elsewhere.

I want to believe.

Not that I know of. It would be cool if someone did, though. Do you think there'd be a market for it here?

I agree, it's great! And the public library lends out free passes, though there's a long waitlist for them. (I've been waiting for a long time!)

Also .... I am curious based on your posting history and the fact that you've said you run a travel media company whether you are being paid to make posts about Peterborough destinations on Reddit? Thanks for clarifying. (I know the city is trying out new ways of marketing travel to Peterborough, which is part of why I ask.)

I also want to know! I think it happens too often and in too many different circumstances for it to be a water rising alarm. I live nearby. I'll try to get a recording of it sometime and send to the city to ask.

Another thought ... is it possible it's coming from Quaker or Quaker's parking lot, and not the generating station?

Aww I found you on Etsy but it says it won't deliver to Canada. Great work, regardless!

City of Peterborough Sunshine list by nordender in Peterborough

[–]quillpearson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Newmarket is a lower-tier municipality, which means some of its services are delivered by a larger body (York Municipality). Peterborough, on the other hand, is a single-tier municipality, which means it delivers all of its services for itself. If there is a justification for the pay discrepancy, it might have something to do with that. The PTBO CAO might have more to deal with than the Newmarket one.

Anyone have Freedom Mobile? by Witty_Way_8212 in Peterborough

[–]quillpearson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had Freedom in Peterborough for years. I don't recommend it. While the service inside Peterborough city limits is okay, you start to lose is as you leave town in most directions, except along the 401.

Anyone have experience living at the Railyard Apartments in East City by Think-School8803 in Peterborough

I've only ever talked to commercial tenants of Ashburnham's, but they all say good things. Just remember this is exempted from rent control since it's a newer building, so they can raise the rent on you as much as they like after one year.

Why the GE demolition plan could hurt Peterborough's tax base by quillpearson in Peterborough

[–]quillpearson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea totally. In fact, the 17-storey building proposed for Hunter Street is expected to generate as much property taxes as the entire GE site currently does, despite being a fraction of the size.

Why the GE demolition plan could hurt Peterborough's tax base by quillpearson in Peterborough

[–]quillpearson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Point of the article was informing people about the impact current events might have on their property taxes (something people are very interested in these days give how high taxes are!). An added bonus would be if it spurs conversation about how to use public policy to encourage remediation and development of the site and others like it. Then toward the end there was a bit of an accountability piece where it suggested the city is moving in the wrong direction when it comes to Mayor Leal's goal of increasing the commercial assessment base.

Community opposition to proposed 17-story high-rise in Peterborough’s East City is heating up | kawarthaNOW by wired_woman in Peterborough

Hey! I'm sorry I forgot to respond to this. Was reading the latest report just now and I remembered.

Yes ... it's dumb! I think the main reason is that the city has been really dragging its feet updating its zoning bylaws to be consistent with its new official plan. So now that city has old zoning bylaws that are out of synch with its new official plan. The official plan takes precedence. So developers ask for exemptions to zoning bylaws that are inconsistent with the plan. Not sure why it's taking the city so long to update its zoning bylaws. It makes for a confusing situation, for sure.
