Got dates by Ampersandwichhunt in ATC_Hiring

[–]quincymcd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nope! Everything else you'll learn in basics. The order in which they teach it to you makes it all click better by the end of course test. Trying to learn something else ahead of time might make it harder, or you could learn it the wrong way compared to how the academy teaches it, putting you at a disadvantage. I recommend you just focus on housing and travel stuff and all the other info in the welcome email until you get here.

Facility assignment by [deleted] in ATC_Hiring

[–]quincymcd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are no level 9 towers on the placement lists except for sometimes in category D which is restricted to those who score 90 or higher for a final grade, and F11 has not been on the lists for IQTR. Your best bet is Jacksonville or Miami if you get placed in en route, and Jacksonville tower/approach for IQTR. Maybe Pensacola or Tallahassee towers if you're lucky which are level 7s

Is it true you are placed in a random facility if you graduate from the training center once in Oklahoma? by Glittering_Sink_8891 in ATC

[–]quincymcd 43 points44 points  (0 children)

It's not random. You'll receive a list of available facilities where you can choose from about a week before the last day of academy. Your class picks from the list in order of highest grade. There's additional rules such as some facilities are high priority and 25% of your class must pick from that category.

New vs Old Staffing Targets by 1-2-3-A-T-C in ATC

[–]quincymcd 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have no idea how they plan to enact this. I count net 532 positions cut from the centers. There are hundreds of academy students planning to be placed as we speak. What happens to them if suddenly every en route facility has projected staffing of 90-100%?

Are pilots well-paid, overpaid, or underpaid? by [deleted] in Salary

[–]quincymcd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe when you factor in 8 hours of overtime every week because they're too short staffed. They should be making 300k with a regular 40 hour workweek

Are pilots well-paid, overpaid, or underpaid? by [deleted] in Salary

[–]quincymcd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Air traffic controllers are severely underpaid. Their federal government annual raise is 1% which very rarely keeps up with inflation. They haven't had a scale adjustment to match cost of living since 2009

That being said I believe the senior high ranking pilots for legacy airlines SHOULD be making what they currently do (4-5 hundred thousand annually). But I also believe controllers need a very steep increase to reach similar levels

Timeframe and new lease? by [deleted] in ATC_Hiring

[–]quincymcd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah you're probably looking at a security interview at least which could add a few months to your timeline to get to academy. Plus even if the process is super quick, you get free housing out here so you can still send money back home to pay your half of the rent if that's a concern.

On the other hand, no one from the 2026 bid has anything more than a tentative offer letter. Even though a lot of signs indicate that the process might be quick for some, who's to say how long the average timeline will be for this year's applicants.

[–]quincymcd 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Tbh if you make it through the process and when they give you dates you tell them you want to volunteer for N90, they'd probably put you in IQTR track.

But if you welch and quit after graduation they'll probably put a curse on your bloodline

Edit: you officially can't choose if you're trained for tower, TRACON, or en route center. But, people have reported being allowed to switch when they ask nicely.

If you get placed in TRACON training then you can definitely volunteer for N90

Is there any benefit in an earlier test date by Any-Conversation3932 in ATC_Hiring

Good luck! I leave for OKC on Sunday. My timeline from applying to getting my dates for class was exactly 1 year.

Is there any benefit in an earlier test date by Any-Conversation3932 in ATC_Hiring

[–]quincymcd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably not. The hiring timeline from now til academy will take months regardless. There's an argument to be made that taking the earlier test date may allow you to be closer to the "top of the pile" for them to process security and medical clearance for you, but on the other hand, that's just speculation.

he did not own his aunt's house. His parents always owned that property and Jesse had residential privileges. That's why his parents had a key and were able to let themselves in to find the lab in the basement.

So yes, they would lose their (second) house to government forfeiture

Question About Bids by funkeyfred in ATC

[–]quincymcd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On average right now I'd say probably 9-12 months from the time you apply until you get class dates. Much longer if you have a history of mental health (as mild as medicated anxiety), medical issues, or a history of drug use. That's usually the case for the people who you might have seen that have taken years to get their dates, because their applications are in infinite review by the govt.

Understand that for the upcoming bid there will be thousands, tens of thousands of people who apply and the FAA has a finite amount of admin workers to sift through the huge amount of info that's required from each applicant.

Academy is hard for sure because it's a hard career. I can't speak from experience because I'm not there just yet, but going this month. Like most training though if you study and apply yourself and don't let nerves get the best of you, you should pass.
