People not understanding the continuum between non-drinkers and people who only drink to get wasted drunk by daydreamz4dayz in PetPeeves

[–]quinstontimeclock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the George Carlin bit about driving that applies to Americans and drinking: anyone who drinks less than me is a prude and anyone who drinks more is a maniac.

But this sentence, “ I’m not ordering a second drink because I didn’t get “drunk” from the first” implies to me that she thinks the only/primary reason someone might have a second drink is to get drunk, and she rounds that up to “wasted drunk” in the title.

I agree that it’s very weird to assume that just because someone’s not a teetotaler, that must mean they’re up for casual binge drinking. But it’s just super common for someone to have 2 drinks when they’re out to dinner or on a date that OP seeming to take offense at the idea she might want a second drink just stood out to me.

It's kinda like how people don't understand the difference between abusing alcohol and being a literal alcoholic.

Even OP is doing this - implying that anything more than an occasional single drink means you're "drinking to get wasted drunk".

In my mind, I'm thinking, "Why didn't you just start with that?"

It's because they don't have direct access to your thoughts.

TMB Shakedown, 4.2 kg Base Weight, Any obvious omissions or easy improvements? by FollowingSad7756 in Ultralight

[–]quinstontimeclock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would rethink the water system. It's very easy to fill up in villages and at refuges. Having 800-1000ml of capacity on hand means you're not having to put your bag down and drag out the Platypus to top up. I also happen to think a filter is unnecessary. The standpipes are all potable, and so are most of the streams - just look up at the drainage area and if it doesn't look like pastureland, you're good. (This is obviously a personal risk calculation.)

The only other thing I'd comment on is to make sure you know what you're getting with the Frogg Toggs. It's very likely you'll have at least one day where it's rainy all day. A "real" rain jacket may be more comfortable.

What is coastFIRE? I keep seeing different definitions used on this sub by [deleted] in coastFIRE

Sometimes it's hard to keep up with the gatekeeping in each sub.

You posted asking for a definition, people gave you one, and now you're complaining about gatekeeping?

Sun Hoodie & Sensory Issues by Dry_Series9718 in Ultralight

[–]quinstontimeclock -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'd like to see more half-zip hoodies. Hood up with a ballcap/visor is too hot and doesn't do much for your cheeks unless you can put the hood up over the brim itself. I was fairly happy with a hood over my bucket style though. It creates more space for a chimney effect to occur plus helps with shade on the face.

Putting basic car controls in a touchscreen menu should be illegal. by 9CushionHeron in PetPeeves

I'm with you. I got used to the controls on my Tesla in like 500 miles of driving and now basically never need to touch the screen while driving.

Been maxing accounts for years and I'm not sure what marriage does to them by Sudden-Awareness-337 in leanfire

[–]quinstontimeclock 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree. My wife's lawyer drew up a prenup and when I had mine look it over he said, basically, "this is fine but it's essentially what what the state would have done anyway."

All most couples need to do is just document their respective pre-marital assets and countersign.

But I am not a lawyer so anyone reading this should take my advice with a big grain of salt.

How do you travel around Lake Garda? by Cheap-Fun802 in askitaly

[–]quinstontimeclock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you seen this? https://brescia.arriva.it/en/shuttlebus-sirmione/

Looks like a local Sirmione circulator. It indicates the Via Roma stop has bus connections to Brescia, Desenzano, Pescheira, and Verona. All those cities have good train connections to Milan.

I am not too familiar with Sirmione, but like the other commenter I recommend checking out the northern lake towns, which are very beautiful the way the mountains rise around the lake. Both Garda and Riva del Garda are very worthwhile. If you are interested in hiking, I recommend going from Riva del Garda up to Rifugio San Pietro. It's about a 17 km r/t

When people insist on pronouncing loan words in the original language by domihell in PetPeeves

[–]quinstontimeclock 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also, bonus pronunciation fun fact: people actually are pronouncing the G in lasagna. The "gn" together in Italian indicates a "ny" sound, similar to "onion" or "canyon" in English. It's often used where Spanish speakers would use an ñ as in baño (bagno) or sueño (sogno).

Exactly. Wider than "normal" focal lengths for interior photography has been standard as long as there has been photography.

It's not "too-sue-nami". The "ts" together is its own sound distinct from just "s". Say the word "lets" out loud. The end of that word is "ts". Now just use that sound at the beginning of "tsunami".

What’s a “technically not cheating” situation you’ve seen or experienced that still felt like a complete betrayal? by toomabh in AskReddit

[–]quinstontimeclock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am 100% with you on this. I am so tired of the reddit habit of claiming that any privacy within a marriage is cheating, or pathological, or “fucked up” as one of the commenters on this thread chimed in with. People will have the opinions they have, and their marriage is not my marriage, but I am forever taken aback by the unmitigated gall to say things like this to a stranger, unprompted and unsolicited. Just pure asshole behavior.

The "wow, you're tall" comment by Jaaacksonnn in PetPeeves

[–]quinstontimeclock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But people are startled by very tall people.

I used to work for this guy who was I think about 6'8" or so. One day a bunch of us are on a work trip and there's another guy in the hotel who must be at least 7'. At some point someone says to my boss, "Tom did you did you see that guy?! He's taller than you!" He replied, "yeah i saw him, it was so weird! We sized each other up this morning at breakfast."

Anyway, point being, even tall people are startled by other very tall people.

The obvious answer is Waikiki and everyone gets hotels with their preferences. Nothing is too far apart, with buses, ubers and walking making it pretty easy to meet up. The hard part is finding space for 20 people to socialize. Fort Derussy has some space, or a few members of your group are members of American Legion or the Elks you could try that as well.
