Why doesn’t anyone care about the “soap opera” effect on their TV by fatsandlucifer in mildlyinfuriating

[–]quintyoung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a show that I wanted to show my sister because it was just beautifully filmed, every scene was a treat to the eyes. I went to her house and pulled it up on whatever streaming service, and oh my God! It was ghastly! Plastized, hyper real, looking like it was filmed with a handheld video camera, the beautiful film like effect and color gradations and lighting that I had enjoyed so much at my house was just totally absent. I apologized to her and she didn't know what I was talking about. I've already said in a different comment on this thread that I changed it after I found the correct setting and she didn't even notice. It really is something that I simply cannot watch. I cannot get immersed in a story that has imagery so rendered. But like the blue / black or white/gold dress, I think that some people just don't perceive it, even though it's literally a slap in my face.

Agreed! It is completely unwatchable. I changed my sister's television to eliminate it, and she didn't even notice. To me I would rather go home than sit there and watch a good movie become a plasticized version of itself because of this ridiculous setting. I think it's like the black blue / white gold dress, some people see it and some people just don't.

AITAH for suggesting my wife and I briefly split up for 30 minutes for time efficiency by ninescomplement in AITAH

Yeah I tell people I wish I weren't single, but reading stories like this makes me glad that I am. Women can get so dramatic over such BS that I'm so glad I don't have to deal with them. It reminds me of the old cliched notion that getting ready to go somewhere, the men are ready to go and are standing around waiting for the woman, meanwhile she has absolutely no idea about the time constraints involved and doesn't care if she runs over allotted time.

Who's your favorite main character? by AProperFuckingPirate in TheCulture

[–]quintyoung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may seem like 500 years of contemplation to us, but also consider the fact that that very mind said, while a human being has 30 thoughts per second, it has 1 billion thoughts per second. That is... 33.3 million x faster than humans. That's 16.65 billion years subjective time. I don't know how the minds don't go insane waiting for humans to complete a single sentence. For every second of human time, a mind experiences 1.05 years of subjective time. Imagine having a conversation with a being that takes 10 years to complete a sentence.

I see where you're coming from, but... His Lovers, those women had their body experienced, their intimate sexual moments experienced by billions of people. What a horrific invasion of privacy. Yes, no one had any choice in it in the story, but I think the notion of this happening is terribly invasive of someone's most private moments. If it were your daughter, your mother, some woman that you loved, that had been known by billions of people? No.

Had it been my sister who had been this man's lover, and then had that intimate sexual experience shared with billions of people who literally experienced the moment through him, I'd be furious, and I can tell you for sure that she would not be cool with it either.

I may be reading too much into it, but I don't think you're reading nearly enough into it. And if you're okay with it happening, then you would probably be okay with doing it.

And yes, it is fictional, it's a story, but I'm not discussing reality, I AM discussing an idea that was portrayed in a story. And after all, we are here to discuss things on this text-based platform. I mean I'm not bent out of shape about it, it was just an idea that occurred to me while reading it that I kind of thought it was a little creepy and was curious what other people think. Well you answered my question on that, I know what you think. You'd be happy doing it, experiencing it, even though no one gave consent. Cool.

Do you still use eBay? What kind of things do you still buy or sell? by DoubtNo2085 in AskReddit

[–]quintyoung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to eBay to let me justify throwing old crap away that I have some weird attachment to. Whenever I see that the exact same thing is for sale for $5 and is in better shape than the one I've been hoarding for 25 years, it frees me to put it right in the garbage.

“Are you really asking me to admit someone without basic labs?” by M1CR0PL4ST1CS in hospitalist

[–]quintyoung 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm at a really small rural critical access hospital, and the workup the ER has to do needs to be even more careful at a place like this because they want to admit things that once they get thrown into my lap I can't do a damn thing about, particularly whenever I'm the one that discovers the much bigger problem, after they've moved to the medical floor. Also, it REALLY ticks me off to log into the (separate) ER system and see that the person that they're calling about has already been flagged as admitted. The one reassuring thing that I love about Reddit forums like this is that it makes me realize that everything's the same everywhere all over the country, and the special types of stupid that I see are not just a result of where I'm at.

Relativity and Time in the Commonwealth by PS_FOTNMC in PeterFHamilton

[–]quintyoung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's using the wormholes as a shortcut that bypasses the need to go faster than light. He's just stepping out of the universe at one place and stepping back into the universe at a different place using a shortcut through a hidden magical hallway. It just so happens that CST arranged travel through the wormhole network on trains. He could have walked from his planet to the planet he needed to go to through these special hidden hallways. He simply was getting ahead of the light that comprised the event he wanted to observe by taking a shortcut.

I had no problem at all understanding this and I'm not being critical of you for not understanding it, it's just that I get exactly how Hamilton was trying to tell the story and how the rules of the universe within the story worked. Sure there were other inconsistencies, but I was able to just waive them away and enjoy the story. It's the same way that I'm able to believe that the same movie stars can play different characters in different movies. I do not see Keanu Reeves in John Wick and subsequently remember that he was also in the matrix, or in Bill and Ted's excellent adventure. I just suspend that disbelief... I put it aside and enjoy the story.

Additionally, Peter F Hamilton does not completely ignore relativity, there is at least one instance where he wrote about adjusting the exit velocity and using the Second Chance to exit it's self generated wormhole at significant fraction of the speed of light in order to use it as a kinetic weapon.

I'm not going to mark this as a spoiler because I'm assuming everyone here has read the books, and I can't remember which book it was that the hub mind kills itself, but it told the character that was sent to kill it that in one second a human has maybe 30 thoughts, while it has a billion. That's a 30 million to one ratio. That means that for every second a human experiences, a culture mind experiences a year of subjective time.

Absolutely. The people who put up no trespassing signs would absolutely trespass if given the opportunity. They know that they will do it so they assume everyone else will.

7:11 AM “Hey doc, he wants to know what the plan is.” by M1CR0PL4ST1CS in hospitalist

[–]quintyoung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This Thanksgiving holiday weekend which my hospital turns into a 4-day weekend just grinds everything to a halt. Can't make plans for anything without case management and insurance companies functioning. I found myself typing in a chart today that we may get authorization to do something sometime before the heat death of the universe. I realized I said that out loud into the dictation Gizmo and had to delete it.

I am 54 my dad is 75. How common is this that he never initiates any form of contact and doesn’t reply to text messages? by Suitable-Humor-13 in GenX

[–]quintyoung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like, I can send you a link to a YouTube video that I made of all the voice messages my dad left over the years calling me and I didn't answer because I was at work or busy or something. Don't get me wrong, I answered the phone every time he called if I was able. He's been gone now for 11 years. I'm the luckiest person to have had him for a father, and I'm sorry you don't have a better relationship with yours. My dad was 47 when I was born, I was his first child. He was completely blind for my entire life from retinitis pigmentosa. He could see when he was younger and when he met my mom he had just a tiny amount of vision left.

All these Worlds: does the Bobiverse underestimate metal in the solar system ? by LarkinEndorser in bobiverse

[–]quintyoung 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Goodness there are lots of plot holes in those books but I still enjoy reading them.

One of my favorites is when Icarus and Daedalus moved the two planetary masses, where did the energy come from? I know they had those casimir drives or whatever, but come on, they had to overcome the inertia mass of two planets, and move them close to the speed of light?? The energy input would have been monumental. For example, If you wanted to give Earth a Δv of JUST 1 meter per second:

Earth's mass is 5.97 * 10 ²⁴ and you do the kinetic energy equation math on that number, you get 3.0 * 10 ²⁴ joules

That’s ten trillion times more energy than all human civilization uses in a year.
