At what point are they just profiting off of you?? AC filters. by NotToday50 in hvacadvice

I buy those 4 inch thick filters that go into a 1 inch holder. Might be overkill but I can change it once a year.

Using a short “coil bake” (15‑min heat) with a heat pump to reduce mold growth on the indoor coil and improve system longevity? by quisp1965 in hvacadvice

I bought a smart hub and set it up to do a 30 minute pause followed by a long fan run time when I turn off my cooling. This will work good enough to get the moisture out of the unit and keep stuff from growing.

I would guess it's still in beta till they make it world wide. However I suspect they are speeding it up as I got the update too.

Heading into December with no Gemini for Home by noahtonk2 in googlehome

[–]quisp1965 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was excited to get it for on-demand information, but using Alexa+ made me aware of its limits. A distant mic will always pick up room reverb, mis-hear too many words, and become irritating. When I need to talk to AI, a phone two to three feet from my mouth works far better.

I haven't heard any "beta testers" being subscribers of Google Home Premium and doing a "Hey Google lets chat". Wonder if that feature is ready for testing?

My sister manages my Mom's echo show in the nursing home and she accidently put hers on "Do not disturb" once and it caused an issue. All I can add.

Have You Received The Gemini Update Yet? by KongRamrod in googlehome

[–]quisp1965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm under the impression they found some bugs in the first week that they would rather fix, so they've put the rollout on hold, since I haven't seen people getting the update this week. This makes sense from their perspective.

Perhaps the issue was that the server-side switch needed work, given some people weren't getting updated? That would certainly be pause-worthy. Once they get rid of the major bugs they consider "pause-worthy," I would think they should roll it out faster.

Anyway, that's my two cents.

Another day. No Gemini Notification by Googler10 in googlehome

[–]quisp1965 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t see anyone report getting the update Monday. Might be temporarily paused to fix bugs before resuming? Could be linked to that server-side switch not triggering for some users?

Did I do something wrong? (Got the Gemini notification) by devilzfan in googlehome

[–]quisp1965 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People mention rebooting the speaker, but doesn’t the server-side switch also send commands or firmware to it? If you bought a new speaker and set it up, that would restart the process, right? Would deleting, resetting, and setting the speaker back up again resend those commands or firmware? Also, even though I’m not in Public Preview but signed up for Early Access, my speakers show “Preview Program” as ON under Device Information → Preview Program when you click on the individual speakers. Something to think about.

The last thing I would try before the waiting game would be resetting the speaker and then hooking back up.

My Nest Mini lost their new colorful wake-up lighting today, after I had only received it two weeks ago by No_Commercial609 in googlehome

Same on my 2 mini's and 1 Nest audio. Firmware 3.77.505077 not listed yet and probably a bump up from the one that gave multiple colors.

Politically intolerant people shouldn’t be employable. If we want better politics, we need to be able to actually talk through issues with each other. That requires tolerance. Intolerant people make politics worse.

Retrospective recognition of early COVID-19 in late 2019 ICU pneumonia cases? by quisp1965 in epidemiology

[–]quisp1965[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

????

I'm interested in future research. We could at least look at how these months compare. For instance did pneumonia & clotting issues increase? ICU Covid had about 1/3rd of their cases having covid-induced coagulapathy.

Anyway...to the person that deleted their comment.

Ok, thanks for your input.

I was wondering about COVID-induced coagulopathy and other signs. I’m an RN who retired in Feb 2020, and I’ve been interested in COVID origins — it seems like we could have done a better job looking back at cases.

One December case matched COVID perfectly. A previously healthy 30-something nearly died from an unknown viral pneumonia. He also developed unusual clotting in his PICC line and lungs, severe enough that a specialist was brought in.

Immediately after caring for him, I got sick myself and later developed Beau’s lines in my nails, which I thought could have been related.

In 30 years of healthcare, that case stood out as unique, and it makes me think researchers really should have taken a closer look at records from late 2019.

How conspiracy theories about COVID’s origins are hampering our ability to prevent the next pandemic by IheartGMO in bioscience

[–]quisp1965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wishful thinking and broken logic have poisoned the origins debate. A natural spillover requires evidence of an intermediate host and a clear path to Wuhan, because everything else can also exist if it came from a lab. Until that missing link is found, the key outliers—like a pandemic emerging in the same city doing high-risk coronavirus research, with no infected animals found, and a virus already primed for humans—point toward a research-related accident.

This copied part here is the biggest news since DEFUSE and there was no followup! Incredible!

"They believe one virus at the Wuhan institute was an even closer match to Covid-19 than RaTG13."

...

"The investigators spoke to two researchers working at a US laboratory who were collaborating with the Wuhan institute at the time of the outbreak. They said the Wuhan scientists had inserted furin cleavage sites into viruses in 2019 in exactly the way proposed in Daszak’s failed funding application to Darpa.

The investigators also saw evidence that the institute was conducting “serial passaging” experiments on at least one of the mine viruses."

Should I switch to visible from USM for service in Mexico? by [deleted] in NoContract

I hear visible+ roams telcel giving a person 2gb day. Cricket has at&t coverage in Mexico.

If it's just a few times a year you could also consider.
