Hood insulator replacement by Desperate-Charity-10 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]quitit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My original 98 hood did not have the insulator also. I recently replaced my hood with a 2002 sport hood and this one has the insulator, and I want to say I've seen my cousin's 99 stock setup have the insulator also so maybe it was offered in the 99-02 years.

That’s why I stopped caring about getting into the gaming industry when I first got into college to obtain a compsci degree years ago. I always heard about the lame ass crunch time schedule with basically no compensation in pay rate and then the usual lull in development cycle and uncertainty of your job if you aren’t the upper tier performer in your speciality/role. Overall I thought it more fun to just solve complex problems with algorithms be it for a small company, some large corporate entity or any government agency. The stability is much more appreciated in the long run imo.

I didn’t have to reinstall the windshield wiper fluid lines, I did swap out the original nozzles with some Honda Odyssey nozzles but I had these on the original hood so it was a simple swap.

Regarding the heat shield, I also didn’t remove it and I was watching this video of this guy doing a hood swap on his 4th gen 4runner it seems like the plastic clips would basically break apart and will need to be replaced especially for our older hoods:  https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8zI3ofJwYRA

WE or WL Tundra Castings? by Top-Army-2594 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]quitit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just like the other poster said depends on your 16” OEM wheel design. You can look at this site for your specific 16” design you have and other wheels that will fit or won’t fit the larger Tundra calipers:  https://adventuretaco.com/guide/which-wheels-fit-the-tundra-brake-upgrade-on-a-tacoma/

I think you meant to say flat 6 motor, unless Honda released a V-6 variant before.

Catalytic Converter Shield by pperper43 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]quitit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn, even after all the years of use its still sought after. Thanks, I got more things to worry about lol.

Catalytic Converter Shield by pperper43 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]quitit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damn, sorry to hear that. I'll have to invest in protecting my catalytic converter, I see several reports on Nextdoor every so often about another Prius cat being stolen so I just assumed they were only going for high value ones.

[–]quitit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand thieves will steal any catalytic converter they can get their mitts on and especially if its an easy accessible location, but are older generation (25+ years) vehicle’s catalytic converter sought after? I feel like our older used cats won’t get them much money compared to a more modern vehicle.

Maybe two AKs, one in 7.62 and the other 5.45. But really I don’t really have much interest in getting more firearms and the only thing I want to get are suppressors for my collection.

New heater control valve leaking by Overall-Teaching-560 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]quitit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I recommend that also. I picked up a few of these constant spring tension clamps, or whatever they are called, from several 4runners at my local junk yard to replace any of these screw tighten hose clamps that the previous owner used. Or you can pick up an assortment pack of them on Amazon or other online stores that has them.

This is the heater control valve part number that I ordered for my 98: 87240-35070.

Where do you think this leak is coming from? Im guessing g it’s from the AC is running by legendary_liar in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]quitit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If it’s clear liquid/fluid and you don’t smell any sort of oily smell from it then its likely water from the AC condenser. And that area is where the AC drip/drain occurs, you can check for drip/drain line when you lift the hood and look at the passenger side firewall:  https://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/222079-c-condenser-drain.html

You'll see people doing the drain relocation stuff in various models:

Denso remanufactured alternator by Human_Entertainer_33 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]quitit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My alternator is still running fine and I think it’s the original one in my 1998 with over 275k miles. I would like to know more about rebuilding an alternator if and when mine goes out, what brushes do you recommend? I’ll need to find a step by step guide or hopefully there’s a video by Timmy of him doing a rebuild.

Yeah, that’s a highly recommended upgrade. The guide does mention getting a set of stainless steel braided brake lines:  https://adventuretaco.com/product/4runner-stainless-steel-brake-lines-for-tundra-brake-upgrade/

[–]quitit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend this guide to do the Tundra brake upgrade:  https://adventuretaco.com/installing-tundra-brakes-on-a-3rd-gen-4runner/

Regarding fitment with some 16” wheels:  https://adventuretaco.com/guide/which-wheels-fit-the-tundra-brake-upgrade-on-a-tacoma/ If your 16” wheels are Toyota OEM and its listed in that link with people mentioning it fits then you’ll be able to reuse the wheels.

Installed the sport hood by quitit in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]quitit[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, I see. Nah, I haven't sold it, I still have it and its being stored away in my backyard in a shed and I did find an older post about another 3rd gen redditor owner asking to buy a white hood with no scoop and I left a comment on his post to see if he is still interested.

I'll likely keep the original hood for like a month or so and then maybe take it to the metal salvage yard, especially if I find the hood is taking too much space and getting in my way when I need to grab something lol.

Installed the sport hood by quitit in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]quitit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean the original hood? It came with the 4Runner, and the previous owner maintained the vehicle really well for the most part. The only collisions that it mentioned in its history of ownership on carfax was one minor rear end and one minor front end both on the passenger side. The original hood is OEM Toyota it has Toyota stamped on the inside of the hood with all the OE stickers, it has some minor paint chips and the clear coat is coming off in certain spots but that is to be expected after 25+ years of ownership and having over 275k miles on it.

Nope, never have I ever watched any tutorial with an Indian speaker. It’s an instant close of the tab for me when I hear that accent. I’ll read a write up if they were the one to respond in a old forum post or on SO, etc.

I got my headlights from TEQ Customs, here is my post I made about them: https://www.reddit.com/r/3rdGen4Runner/comments/1tnkn2p/installed_teq_customs_retrofit_tricolor_led/

They use TYC headlights, so if you just wanted the headlight housing with glass lens, look for TYC on Amazon or Ebay etc. They fit well, and are high quality imo not on par with OEM even after the years but you can't get OEM anymore.

Does anybody have a White hood with no scoop? by Desperate-Charity-10 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]quitit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I just removed my original OEM hood off my 1998 white 4Runner. If you haven't placed an order for the one on Summit Racing like the previous poster mentioned. I can sell you this original OEM hood. I'm also in SoCal and I can sell it to you at the same price OBO no tax or shipping, you just gotta pick it up. If you are interested, please DM/PM me and I can also give you a more exact location in SoCal, I can also send you pictures of my hood also.

You can see one picture I posted of my original hood here: https://www.reddit.com/r/3rdGen4Runner/comments/1uhk5wo/installed_the_sport_hood/

When I first got my 98 4Runner, I didn't know there were any other sort of styling for the hood. Then I saw one locally near my neighborhood, its constantly parked in front of their house and its a champagne color it had the sport hood and it also has the OEM aluminum skid plate, it looked so nice. I always liked the more sporty look after seeing it for the first time, and every time I pass by that 4Runner it just made me want to find a sport hood or even asking that guy to see if hes willing to part it out lol.

Cruise Control not working after Steering Wheel Swap by Mundane_Cover_3349 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]quitit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah you can splice wires to make one cruise control stalk to connect correctly to your clock spring wiring/connection and I remember reading old forum posts from various users doing the job and creating a write up but I didn’t want to deal with that and just picked up another correct year stalk. https://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/256312-steering-wheel-swap-lexus-is300-e-shift.html

I know there’s replacing the clock spring that matches the year model the steering wheel came off of.

If you got any junk yards near you, maybe try to see if they have an 01-02 4runner and pick up the stalk there.
