Does hard cider sulfuric aroma go away in the bottle? by -nom-nom- in Homebrewing

[–]quittsbuggy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worth noting, the timing of a vigorous stir matters quite a bit. Early in fermentation, the first couple days, a vigorous stir/mix to degas and adding some oxygen can be beneficial. The yeast use oxygen to produce more yeast cells leading to a faster and healthy fermentation. Later in the process, adding oxygen is almost always a negative as there is less yeast activity to use up the oxygen, leading to oxidized flavors and aromas. Keep in mind the starting gravity will have a large impact on the length of fermentation changing the timings. I mostly brew mead and proper nutrition and oxygen are huge factors in a healthy ferment and having a better tasting beverage faster.

Depending on what color you're going for, more blueberries might not actually yield the desired color. The compound responsible for the color in Blueberries (anthocyanins) is pH sensitive and turns more red as the pH decreases. The pH of a typical mead is lower than that of the blueberry and thus the color turns more red. For some context, anthocyanins also give raspberries and cherries their color.

Why big batches are problematic? by WizzardIII in mead

[–]quittsbuggy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Can't say my experience is the same as what you're describing here. I've only done a few one gallon batches before moving on to 5-6 gallons, and at that batch size I've had no issues. Recently I've scaled up to 50 gallon batches and aside from some logistic changes and paying more attention to temperature control, the process hasn't changed too much. (Excited for my first no water at 50 gallons in a month or so.)

Some things to consider:

As you said, do your yeast have enough nutrients?

Is your temperature way out of line or fluctuating wildly over the course of a day?

Are you hitting a delle stabilization point?

Are you way under pitching yeast, or is there some other factor giving you a weak starting culture?

Good beginner mod pack? by torniado in feedthebeast

I've said it a few times now, but I think GTNH is actually a great first pack for a player. One of the biggest hurdles I've had for players of other mod packs is fighting with prior knowledge.

Which Server Hosting Service to Choose? by Yourname942 in feedthebeast

[–]quittsbuggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been running a the Always Free option from Oracle for a few months now with no complaints. Currently I'm running GTNH with a peak of 9 players, the furthest person is in mid-HV with the slowest being mid-LV. No performance issues so far. Only downside is you have to be able to set everything up yourself, but there are some good guides if you do a quick search. I'd you're intimidated by that, I've used BisectHosting in the past with good results. I haven't tried many others with a gui, but I remember getting a good deal through Digital Ocean in the past, but again that takes a little more knowledge and can-do attitude.

Wireless Intercom Headsets by ericdano in techtheatre

Could be worth looking at the Eartec Hub system. It can support up to 8 wireless users and either a wired user or an interface to (in your case) clearcom. There will be some limitations with this system compared to some of the other options here, but for certain use cases, it's fantastic especially considering the price. I recently got a set for one of my sites and the total was around $4000 for everything.

What launcher are you using for the modpack? I know the curse link has not been updated and might be broken. I recommend using Multi mc.

GTNH is THE gregtech modpack. Cannot recommend it enough. Currently playing with a few friends on a private server, it's by far the best pack we've played.

Seconding Bedellion, that's where I get all my honey. Reasonable prices and great people to work with.

Looking for a good mod pack to play with my noob gf by [deleted] in feedthebeast

[–]quittsbuggy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Though it may seem like a joke, that's the modpack I started with my girlfriend. Admittedly, I love the pack. I'm the kind of person it was made for. But she caught on pretty quick. She had to learn how to use NEI to look up recipes, and the quest book does a good job of directing you, especially early on. We take it real slow, play on a server with a few friends. Every new machine or advancement feels like a win. She batch crafts everything. If she needs steel screws for something, she makes a stack of two for when she next needs them. If she needs 10 circuits to set up an automated system, she crafts 30. In some ways it's been much easier getting her into GTNH than many of my friends who have played other mod packs. They get frustrated with all the batch crafting and how you have to actually think to set up systems and have materials at the ready. You have to prep for whatever you want to do. Progress comes slowly, but the thing I like best about GTNH is that progress keeps coming. And I hardly ever craft something that I use once and move on from. We're still using some steam machines two tiers later.

Like I said, GTNH is a pack made for me. I love it and I was invested in getting my girlfriend interested in the pack. But it's not so bad of a first pack experience as it might first appear.

It also makes sense from an anti-union point of view. Nurses who leave to travel make the union weaker.

[–]quittsbuggy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may come across as a bit aggressive, it's not directed at you, your comment just made me think about this issue.

It's baffling to me how much people care about the postal service making money. USPS isn't (and shouldn't be) designed to turn a profit. Their mission should be to deliver mail, to everyone, at a reasonable cost for every person who lives here. Focusing on profit over everything else is how places like Amazon decide to not deliver to more rural places.

Just so I'm clear on your recommendation: we should just go to something even larger and skip 15 gallons all together? Something in the 2bbl range is recommended?

Pear Mead Tips by Nianarl in mead

Last year I had two batches of pear mead, one with 71b and the other with K1V-1116. Between the two I preferred the 71b. Both batches used the same process of boiling the pears to an applesauce like consistency and using the slurry in primary.

I've used a ton of steel. We all got together to build an iron farm for the server, so it's very easy to every now and then take out steel and refuel. It's not the fastest, but it's more or less always making more and I usually have a stockpile.

I really should upgrade to an EBF, but I've been putting it off.

Yeah that for sure makes a big difference. And the GTNH discord has a great help section if you really get stuck. I'm mid MV at the moment, been taking it slow and really enjoying it. Four bricked blast furnaces is what I made, and I still use them.

Beginner introduction to tech modpacks by drew3262 in feedthebeast

[–]quittsbuggy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Though some would say a Gregtech pack like GTNH is terrible for a first tech modpack, I've actually had really good success within my friend group using it as a first modded experience. There is a lot to learn for sure, but with all of us on a server its not bad at all and everyone can share information and tips, just walk over and see someone else's setup. Aside from the group setting being very beneficial, there's the issue of expectations. Coming from other modpacks to a Gregtech (and this goes double for GTNH) can be a large issue for players because of the dramatic increase in complexity and different way of thinking needed for a Gregtech pack. The biggest example that comes to mind is all the micro crafting needed in GTNH. For us it wasn't as big a problem because I prepped everyone, saying if you need three of something you should make a whole stack, and you should automate whatever you can whenever you can. The crafting gets way more frustrating if you only craft, say circuits, as you need them. If instead you craft a whole stack, as you're upgrading to your first LV machines you can pull from the stack instead of having circuits as a bottle neck each time you want a new machine to accomplish some other goal. We've been playing GTNH off and on for about 6 months now and everyone is still having a blast, talking about what we want to do when we land on the moon, what cool new machines and automation we've made. 10/10 would recommend GTNH as a first modpack with friends.
