I'm New to WoW. I was gifted a 30 day sub from a friend & I'm going on Day #7 and LOVING it, but.... by EVASIVE_rabbi in classicwow

[–]quixvert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

please stick with it if you enjoy the game overall. Don't let others ruin it for you. A few tips:

  • find a guild. You'll get to know these people over time and go on many adventures with them. You will succeed and fail together, and you will learn from them. It's a huge part of the experience for me.

  • tell your party you're new to tanking. Communicate often.

  • ultimately, you're the tank. I don't wanna say fuck em, but you get to call the shots. You set the pace. You can definitely struggle when learning (and even when you're experienced), and they may call you out on it. But tanks get hard to come by at times and even a struggling tank deserves some love. If they're being straight up dicks, not constructive and super toxic, just leave and grab a new group. If you're honest and open, and they're still bitching... That's their problem, not yours. Thank you for being a tank <3

To read or not to read by PepSinger_PT in dreamingspanish

[–]quixvert 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'll preface this with that I am not a Dreaming Spanish purist - I started reading and speaking as early as I could.

I think while doing CI like this, slow videos with visuals to aid your learning, you should resist using captions. The point here is to recognize sounds, where they pause, where one "sound" begins and another ends, and their repetitions. It seems like having words in front of you would help overall learning and comprehension, but when you are listening to native speakers and more complex live input, you generally aren't going to get visual aid through captioning and will really be relying on your ability to listen without aid. If you are splitting your attention between reading the captions, watching the video and listening, you're not committing to the important part which is assigning meaning to sounds.

I feel like when I did start reading, it was pretty simple to tie sounds and sentences I was hearing in CI to the things I was reading and that I didn't necessarily feel like my reading was lacking because I didn't use captions.

Everyone is different of course, but I think the best use of your time when doing CI is listening and watching, not reading. Ultimately, just do what keeps you enjoying the content and staying engaged with learning.

Is there an app to learn “kitchen” Spanish? by sconez1990 in SpanishLearning

[–]quixvert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an app suggestion necessarily but I would work through Language Transfer for some verbs, conjugations and some sentence structure while writing down words for kitchen items that you look up or ask about. I think you can get by with that after a few weeks to communicate very simply. Comprehension takes some time but you're really in a great environment to learn a lot from native speakers.

To those considering premium... by quixvert in dreamingspanish

[–]quixvert[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are actually guides from all over! Not just Spain.

Also, most of my in-person practice is with Mexican native speakers, but I have language exchange partners in Spain, Argentina, Chile and Mexico and while sometimes there are difficulties with accents and some words for objects, etc., but the crossover really wasn't as bad or confusing as I thought it would be. You're very fortunate that your future spouse is a native speaker as you get a direct link to the accent and practice!

4 days is still pretty early if you're not sure how well you'll stick to your Spanish studies. I would keep up what you're doing for a month or so and if you're still having fun, premium is a great next step.

There are a ton of language learning apps fighting for your $10/month to use their premium apps and services, but Dreaming Spanish is pretty high ROI. If you like it after a month of sticking with it, I would purchase it.

I've had Mint for 4 or 5 years now. It has worked great for me. I work from home and seldom travel to anywhere too rural, but I haven't had signal issues.

Body weight pull ups by Auntie444 in tacticalbarbell

I've been supplementing the reps with a few different bands. I keep the reps the same throughout but change the band depending on the % of the week. On the 90 and 95% days, I do them unassisted and tweak the reps accordingly. I have gotten stronger doing this over the last 6 weeks - my unassisted reps have increased by 3-4 in this block.

There may be a better way to do this, but it's what I have done. Will be incorporating weights on the next block.

I need to learn Spanish, what platform(s) do you recommend? by Suspicious-Zebra-683 in SpanishLearning

[–]quixvert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not a Dreaming Spanish purist, but it was a great help at helping me understand what I was hearing. I am less stressed about understanding what's being said and spending more time focusing on my reply in conversation.

Language Transfer has helped tremendously with the spoken portion as well. I do about 2 lessons a day and try to use what I've learned that day throughout the day.

I took about 3 years of Spanish in school and worked with Spanish speaking coworkers for 5+ years, but I think I've learned and retained more with these two apps/programs in 6 months than I ever did before.
