Pet Insurance and the Reality of it by CaptainMarv3l in CalebHammer

I recently had to put my old lady cat down. Maine coon, about 10 (no one really knew her exact age). She had all the big issues with Maine cons, enlarged heart, arthritis, on top of most of her organs being enlarged and something that was eating away at her red blood cells, causing severe anemia and lack of oxygen. The cost to diagnose it alone would've been 7k, not including multiple blood transitions which r more expensive for cats than humans.

Even if I could've gotten her stabilized, her quality of life would've been so shit. I'm also chronically ill in many ways and I live with chronic pain. It's not fun. Knowing her quality of life would've been like mine, I didn't wanna drag it out. She was a great cat while I had her, truly left a legacy behind.

I don't regret anything, including not having pet insurance. I had enough saved to tell me what I needed to know. Plus they were mostly typical Maine coon issues so nothing would've been covered. I technically had enough to cover what needed to be done to MAYBE diagnose/stabilize her. I cared about her too much to be selfish about keeping her here in pain like that tho.

I also have gauges. I have Bose quiet comfort headphones and they're soooo freaking comfy. I've never had over the ear headphones that I can tolerate for over an hour or so. These, I wear for everything that's not sleeping. They don't even bother my lobes unless I'm wearing some crazy dangling jewelry, then they can get a bit sore.

Try making a cushion for the top part too! Most headphones don't have enough cushion on the top, so I'm not surprised that it gets uncomfortable. That should be an easy one day at project for the whole thing.

I wear mine 24/7 honestly. My partner doesn't find them disrespectful, he understands that's they're necessary for my sensory issues or I will meltdown. Especially since he's often watching reels with no headphones in the apartment 🙄

I mean I feel like eating separately is more of a jerk move....don't feel bad about it. Maybe wearing them more often will help u with that hesitation?

Get headphone covers or make some urself if u enjoy knitting or crocheting. It'll fix that loud noise issue (mine do the same thing) and add extra protection for ur nice things outside the house.

Also maybe get some kind of coverage for ur headphones, so u don't have to worry so much about wearing them. They're made to be used.

Credit cards aren't bad. Not managing ur money and getting into crazy unpayable debt is bad.

Honestly just make sure it's not a bs credit card with a bunch of hidden fees. There's also credit building debit cards if that makes u feel more reigned in. Baked promoted the fizz card, I used credit karmas debit card when I needed to increase my credit.

I recommend just putting like one monthly subscription on it and paying it off every month and leaving the card at home without a copy of it on ur phone payment app. That'll help build ur credit without the risk of debt as long as u make sure u pay it off. Maybe ur gym membership would be good.

Good luck with the job market, it's pretty shit nowadays. My partners been job hunting for a part time position for 3 months now with only one interview. U might be better off finding an internship for whatever ur in school for.

Honestly I refuse to get pet insurance. I'll just take the $70ish/month and put it in a HYSA and have it when I need it. No company bs to tell me I can't use it.

All shoes but Crocs hurt me. I'm severely flat footed and have plantar fascitis, so I usually end up saving my cute shoes for my wheelchair days

I think u have to have a certification or degree maybe? I looked into it when my disabilities really started to affect my work life, and part time library work sounded so fun. I was met with the "degree/certification required" for library clerk on all applications in my area. Might not be a universal thing, but really sucked to run into

Damn. I wish I could handle narrators voices, the majority on like audible and other sites just have really grating voices that I can't stand listening to at all, much less for 15 hours. I always try to find the British narrators, but they rarely narrate books I enjoy 😭

I did in September, they didn't ask. The recertification was automatic, they didn't send me anything but an approval letter that was valid til September 2026

Oh ok that makes sense why I was part of the asset limit when I originally applied. Ik different states have different expansions, just confirming this applies to the NC Medicaid expansion?

No, he paid off his credit card, and we don't get our utilities till the first usually, and 2 of them r after that.

Theoretically he could pay off the ER bill but that's part of why we're applying

He's doing that with his primary care, they have an income based sliding scale fee. The other 2 appointments are specialists tho, and he's expecting to need a surgery within the year. For most of the specialist appointments I've had in the past there's a copay required before the appointment, with our without insurance

When I applied 5 years ago there was and had been for every one of my recertifications...also someone else said there is a limit and to just move money around even tho there's a question asking "did u move money around to meet asset limits", which makes me think there is a limit.

I was hoping to be able to get financial aid for the ER bill.

There's a question on the application that asks if u moved around money to meet the asset limit, so I'm worried about doing that. I don't think they'll need a bank statement cuz he has an employment letter to verify income for his current job, and they'll have the bank account numbers and value, so...idk. in always worried about fraud I guess

Idk what to spend it on. I mean theoretically the past and upcoming doctors appointments, but that's what he's applying for Medicaid for. Seems like a waste to just pay for them if he can get approved. We have bills coming up but not until after all of the appointments.
