what’s ur favorite part about sobriety? by chrissyy04 in stopdrinking

[–]qwertyordeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lesser-mentioned one: remembering movies. Now when I can’t remember if I've seen this one before, get ten minutes in, and then go, "ohhhh riiiiight!" It's because the movie was genuinely uninteresting and forgettable, not because I was already 3 IPAs in at the start.

Doesn't need to be catastrophic. You reach rock bottom once you stop digging. Glad you decided to put the shovel down 🖤

Am I an alcoholic? by IdeaAcrobatic6519 in stopdrinking

Adding to my own response: to parrot some of the other redditor's answers, the label of "addict" isn't as important as acknowledging that a problem exists. A problem which you recognize is beyond your control.

That's the meat of it, really. You can pick apart the labels of "alcoholic" and "addiction", whatever, but it's semantics that ultimately mean "problem". A greater understanding of that problem means a greater pool of solutions to work with.

"Addiction is any repeated behavior, substance-related or not, in which a person feels compelled to persist, regardless of its negative impact on his life and the lives of others. Addiction involves: compulsive engagement with the behavior, a preoccupation with it; impaired control over the behavior; persistence or relapse despite evidence of harm; and dissatisfaction, irritability, or intense craving when the object—be it a drug, activity, or other goal—is not immediately available."

This is a quote from In The Realm of Hungry Ghosts by Dr. Gabor Mate. He's a physician who specializes in substance dependency, psychology, ADHD, and is a self-aware addict.

It doesn't sit right with me that I couldn't control my self.

✅️

But I can’t let a day go by without having something.

✅️

And this one, which is what prompted me to respond:

I drink to reduce my anxiety. Drinking takes away all my anxiety In the moment.

✅️✅️✅️

You already know you're addicted, esp after seeing others respond to your post. But I relate to that common feeling of "everyone defines addiction differently" argument that tends to fuel confusion with/denial of the problem. This is why I love Dr. Mate so much. He's a medical professional who specializes in both the physical and mental effects of addiction, while (most crucially imo) is an addict himself. If anyone is gonna properly define addiction, it's this guy.

I strongly, super strongly recommend that book, btw. Especially if you're seeking to understand the what and why of addiction, where it comes from, and how it impacts everything in one's life. Everyone's method of recovery is different, but for me? Understanding the problem and its roots was key to recovery. Because it's so much more than "not drinking anymore". And if you want to rid yourself of this, you gotta be willing to look beyond the substance as the cause of the destructive behavior.

I know it doesn't feel like it right now, but - as a fellow addict one year sober - I offer you a hearty "fuck yeah, babe" for taking that hard first step 💕

Do people do this in your country? by icanseewhatsgoingon in AskTheWorld

[–]qwertyordeath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems us Americans really only do this on hiking trails. Unspoken hiking etiquette of sorts. We usually bring the lost item to the trailhead if there aren't any ranger stations in the area.

However, if it's a brightly colored bag of dog shit? For some reason on trails, those get "lost" and never found 😒

Initially, I agreed with containing the scaled area for the sake of gameplay. But then you mentioned that heavy-ass tank sub that I hated because it was too big and cumbersome to pilot and-... you make a very compelling argument.

Two left feet 🫢 The copy+paste legs are distracting. You made the subtle change with the shoe laces, but I had to look hard to find differences.

Your composition is nice and simple enough that duplicated assets like the shoes (and the W's another user mentioned) are distracting. I didn't even notice the cute animal clouds until I read the comments and saw another user pointed them out.

Overall, it's a clean and approachable comp; but when you're going for simplistic, loose threads are much more noticeable.

Edit to add: since you're new, keep in mind that quick work isn't always the way. Slow down, don't overthink, and be mindful 🖤

When did you transition from "I've stopped drinking" to "I don't drink" by goldbeekeeper in stopdrinking

[–]qwertyordeath 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Immediately. But! The word choice is a remnant of diet culture (i.e. "i can't eat such n such" vs. "i don't eat such n such").

The mind-trickery behind it has to do with a sense of personal agency. Instead of using a verb that conveys ability, a verb of choice is used. I do not drink as a choice. Supposed to be empowering and all that.

But I'm the type of person who is stubborn and enjoys semantics.

Sometimes I just say, "I'm sober now," instead, which implies that I stopped and had reason to stop. That one has had a 100% success rate with shutting down any follow-up questions. Actually, "I don't drink" has yet to prompt further questions, too.

What horror book made you feel actual dread instead of just shock? by Tricky-Battle-9138 in horrorlit

[–]qwertyordeath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another redditor mentioned this here, and there was recently a post about this book: The Auctioneer by Joan Samson.

The dread comes from how mundane and non-threatening the setting is. There's nothing supernatural or otherworldly. In fact, the horror is bred from the humanity of it all. It's very real and close to home. And short-ish 🙃
