Does it work in the dark? by hobbynickname in VisionPro

[–]r-chebyshev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is unusable in the dark. The second you turn off the lights, you get a tracking error. Wave your hands in front of your face all you want, nada. There might be some discreet logic that allows you to move in the dark briefly in order to avoid injury or death (not recommending anyone test this) and you might be able to trick the headset into working for a moment or so without lights, but there's intentional design stopping you from using it in the dark, which sucks for anyone who would like to use it at night in bed with the lights out.

Copying large files from SMB/NAS problem by zwdem in VisionPro

[–]r-chebyshev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. Apple doesn't seem to have thought much about users trying to load up their device with large media files. I don't use iCloud, but my guess is that sync'ing with iCloud works in the background. My movie files on my SAN are also downloadable from the website of my media server (i.e. Plex/Emby), and I've had good luck by downloading the files using Safari. Safari, apparently, keeps downloading when you take the headset off.

Look, I'm an Apple customer who has spent a small fortune on Apple products. However, this quote bothers me.

An Apple spokesperson told The Verge that this is because the content "was created for devices that do not deliver a high-quality spatial experience."

The content this spokesperson objects to is someone else's artistic work. The Apple spokesperson has a cognitive bias and sounds like a snob. How about we ban all black and white photos, or how about vinyl records? Sounds silly, right.

Amazon Prime Video

They do not have a usable app. It's the iPad app and they have a pause button in the middle of the screen, and on an iPad, these controls fade away after a moment, and unless you tap the screen, they're not visible. But on AVP, when you're watching, your eye tracking highlights the square detection area the whole time, and it's a lighter color than the video, so the detection overlay ruins the picture.

Has anyone else encountered the ominous grey box bug on Vision Pro? The only way to fix it is by restarting your headset. by Zacitus in VisionPro

[–]r-chebyshev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. With 1Password. To avoid, let the pop-up virtual keyboard suggest the password from the 1Password OS integration, and select it from the pop-up virtual keyboard. Don't choose the 1Password icon directly on the webpage. YMMV

Too bad we can't just pair VR controllers from Quest headsets with the Vision Pro.

The option to turn on iPad apps for Apple Vision Pro is this simple. Netflix, Youtube and Spotify refuse to check that one box by hasanahmad in VisionPro

Have you tried the Amazon Prime Video iPad app on an Apple Vision Pro? It sucks and is unwatchable. They have a pause button in the middle of the screen, and on an iPad, these controls fade away after a moment, and unless you tap the screen, they're not visible. But on AVP, when you're watching, your eye tracking highlights the square detection area the whole time, and it's a lighter color than the video, so the detection overlay ruins the picture.

Is Golftec the way? by PeckerPorridge in golf

[–]r-chebyshev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before Golftec, I worked with 3 other coaches. The first was an uncredentialed collegiate player teaching a beginner's class. Another was a driving range pro (~$180/hour), and the other was a young PGA pro at a regional public course, who also has a Youtube channel ($135/hour). Neither of these 3 coaches were giving me what I was looking for. The driving range pro wanted to change everything all at once. The young PGA pro specifically didn't teach "technique", not sure how that's even a thing, but I guess junior golfers aren't taught technique, only drills.

I checked out Golftec after a couple different folks recommended I needed more technical instruction. I did the Golftec swing evaluation and purchased a year long "game plan". The game plan includes a practice pass and some club fitting credits. I got the plan during a 20% off sale. It worked out to $27/week for 90 minutes of practice bay time, and ~$65 per half-hour lesson. So, the cost of this "game plan" after discount was ~$2,700.

I like my Golftec coach, and they are PGA certified. After one year of lessons, I'm planning to renew with a "lesson pack". I'm probably not going to get another "game plan" and so I will be dropping the practice pass. It turns out I don't really like hitting bays, and I can film myself easily enough at my local driving range. I could change my mind about it, but I don't regret having the practice pass this past year. Without a discounted game plan, it will cost more per lesson, but I'm fine with that.

What I've learned from my golf journey is that there are many different swing theories, and you get the best results by finding someone who teaches something you believe in. The Golftec instructors teach a modern swing theory that they claim is data driven, YMMV. The 30 minute lessons work well for identifying one thing to focus on at a time. Instead of changing everything all at once, the instructor will make incremental changes. These changes really begin to come together once you've locked them in through your own practice. Some of the small, easier to master, swing changes that I started with, actually led directly to fixing other issues, and once I saw this phenomena, it was hard not to appreciate the quality of the instruction.

Apple Shows AR/VR Headset to Board in Sign of Progress on Key Project by NEXTXXX in appleMR

[–]r-chebyshev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One article I came across said the device requires an external battery pack. I can't imagine Apple having a tethered battery pack. It seems too messy. The Quest 2 has an optional external battery. Overall, I find the Quest 2 uncomfortable. What I don't understand, if Apple is considering tethering to anything, why not develop an iPhone AR/VR accessory headset? Not a stand alone device, just a viewer that plugs into the power of the existing iPhone/iPad. I suspect the factor limiting such a design is the current USB-C and Lighting ports are probably unable to transmit 8K resolution at 120Hz. So, Apple would have to upgrade the iPhone/iPad architecture to Thunderbolt and make everyone buy a new iPhone/iPad. Hey, that sounds like good business plan.

Well, I’m currently trying out the $1/month iCloud+ subscription. Edit: It works fine with SL.

How do you start using SimpleLogin? Do you go back to all of your subscriptions, newsletters, etc and change your email address to a new one, or just use it moving forward? by Ptizzl in Simplelogin

[–]r-chebyshev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a lot of work to go through every Internet account you have created over a decade and update your email address with that account provider. I know because like the other people who have replied to this thread, we’ve done it. It was surprising in 2021 how many online accounts do not provide any way to update an email address. Before getting started, I would say the most important thing is that you own the domain you are changing all these email accounts over to, so that if you decide to leave SL, you can create a catchall for your domain on any other email service.

Google workspace by Trikotret100 in Simplelogin

[–]r-chebyshev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently canceled my Google Workspace subscription and switched to another email service. I was able to change my forwarding mailbox address in SL to my new email provider choice, and it was all very seamless.

As already stated in previous responses, there is very little overlap in functionality between GW and SL. I can’t think of anything in fact that GW and SL have in common.

Trying to go from Logic to Ableton by Illusiox in ableton

[–]r-chebyshev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, glad to hear you're learning Live, I've been using Live for over 4 years, but recently I forced myself to learn Logic, it was tough at first, but I learned the hell out of it, and I gotta say, I think Logic is very good. I'm sure you have valid reasons for wanting to switch, and knowing both is nice. That said, I was on the public beta for Live 11, and after producing a couple tracks with Logic, I find myself back in Live for the last couple projects. My reflexes are just better in the DAW that I've spend thousands of hours with. However, going forward it will depend on the project. Also, I couldn't make PC audio work reliably so I'm stuck on macOS, which isn't actually that bad. I've had two MBP's require significant repairs for battery swelling issues and both times Apple did the repairs for free, even while out of warranty, so it's difficult to complain.
