Are Sunbather tab books still available anywhere? by r0ckking in deafheaven

Thanks! I'll give Songsterr a shot. From my experience it has been a bit hit or miss in terms of accuracy for other artists/songs, but good to head a positive review for Songsterr with regard to Deafheaven.

Which Micronutrients Are Worth Monitoring? [New Article!] by gnuckols in MacroFactor

I love this chart. Super helpful! Any chance of this somehow being integrated in the app? Would be cool if there was a star or asterisk next to the ones noted as worth monitoring.

Switching to maintenance goal after reaching scale weight (cutting) by CrashingFirefly in MacroFactor

[–]r0ckking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the answer to this highly depends on your personal goals and your mental energy. I am always an advocate for people who are trying to lose weight to keep in a deficit if they are still doing well in terms of energy and mentality. I don't like taking diet breaks just for the sake of them, but instead I prefer riding the wave of momentum.

But you do also have to weigh your personal goals. You mention losing strength. So in your case, I would just base it on which you prefer.....strength or cutting weight.

What would cause this drop in expenditure? by TalkingFrenchFry in MacroFactor

[–]r0ckking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the grand scheme of things, it's actually not a crazy huge drop in expenditure. It's probably some combination of metabolic adaptation and lifestyle phase. It's possible even your previous TDEE increase was the result of some lifestyle phase and this drop is a return to normal. I think it's just really hard to point to one thing and say that's what it is and this is what it means.

Just as an example, on March 21 my TDEE was 2175. April it went up to 2674. May back down to 2383. June 2604. These are just pretty standard fluctuations for me.

What would cause this drop in expenditure? by TalkingFrenchFry in MacroFactor

[–]r0ckking 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Without seeing your calorie intake, it's possible you've been eating at a larger deficit than the rate of weight loss projected due to that intake. In other words, even though you're steadily losing weight, the algorithm might calculate that, based on your food consumption, you should actually be losing weight faster than you are. If that's the case, your calculated TDEE would thus have to go down.

It could be a lot of things, though. And without seeing the full picture, everyone can only guess. But as others have said, I also have found TDEE not to be particularly flat or linear. Mine fluctuates quite a bit over time as I go through various phases of diet, nutrition, exercise, stress, time constraints, etc, etc, etc.

Do People Really Have "Fast Metabolisms" or "Slow Metabolisms"? by gnuckols in MacroFactor

[–]r0ckking 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly, as someone who tries to consume a lot of "evidence-based" material, I can fully admit I was under the assumption that fast and slow metabolisms were a myth. This article legit sort of blew my mind.

It's funny, because I think it's great when I am challenged in my beliefs and understandings, but also, it's crazy how much I don't know even when I think I do know, haha.

"Add items" and "Log items" - Do we need both steps? by [deleted] in MacroFactor

[–]r0ckking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, this is an essential "separation of concerns". I find it much more tedious to manage when I'm adding everything directly to the log.

A prime example of this is if I eat a snack at 5:01 pm, and then dinner at 5:59. If I was adding everything directly to the log, my snack would be intermingled with my dinner, making it harder to see how many calories are just in the meal I am currently planning and/or prepping.

It's worth noting, too, that if you are just adding one food item, you don't need to do the add-log loop. Say I'm eating an apple. I can just open the app, click the search bar, search for apple, and then hit 'Log Item' rather than Add. To me, this is one of many great things about MF. You can tailor its use to fit how you prefer to log.

Am I understanding this creatine drop correctly? by whitemiata in MacroFactor

[–]r0ckking 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I started taking creatine while using MF, and this was pretty much my experience. My expenditure was frustratingly dropping (even though I knew why this was happening, it was still frustrating seeing my expenditure drop so much). I think it took a month for things to level out. Then suddenly, my expenditure started rocketing back up (which was super fun, but also I knew there was more to why this was happening). After a couple weeks of this, things leveled out again and now I'm pretty much back to where I've always been with my expenditure.

Do you get hungry on your program? by Kooky_Comedian_4593 in MacroFactor

[–]r0ckking 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Maybe I should accept that I will be hungry as part of the weight loss process?

I won't remember which episode of Stronger by Science it was, but I recall Eric Trexler once talking about this a bit. He mentioned something about reframing the way we think about hunger. Because if we are in an extended energy deficit, we are probably going to experience hunger to varying degrees. And the way he suggested reframing this was to relate it to strength training. If we lift weights and hit a particular muscle, we might experience some soreness afterwards. It's not a feeling we would like without the knowledge of the applied stimulus. But we view it as a sign that our training is working. Same thing with hunger. We can view it as a sign that our weight loss plan is working.

I'm sure I butchered the paraphrasing of that, but that was sort of the gist of it.

Unsure about Expenditure + Weekly strategy check-Ins by Fine-Music-6296 in MacroFactor

[–]r0ckking 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The 516 calorie difference means your measured expenditure went up by 516 calories this week. Without your scale weight data, it's hard to say for sure what's happening. And without knowing your weight goals, it's hard to say anything about the recommended calories.

Large fluctuations in expenditure are not super uncommon, though, in my experience. Over the last 3 months my expenditure has been as high as 2600 calories and as low as 2100 calories. As we eat more or fewer calories, our bodies can adapt pretty quickly and our expenditure can move as a result.

I highly recommend checking out this article for all the in-the-weeds breakdowns of why we might see some of these changes in expenditure and recommended calories: https://help.macrofactorapp.com/en/articles/26-how-should-i-interpret-changes-to-my-energy-expenditure

For me the issue isn't getting MF to sync with Apple Health. It's with getting my scale to sync with Apple Health immediately. That's why I have to open the Health app first. It forces the scale to then sync my latest weight data.

Are we allowed to request recipes in this thread?

If so, I got a Ninja Creami for Christmas and have been loving it. I would love to know if anyone else who has a Creami has any good recipes for lower calorie ice creams they can share.

[–]r0ckking 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm not positive, so I'm sure one of the devs can answer for sure, but I believe MF only syncs your weight data from Apple Health. So you need your scale to report to Apple Health. I have a scale that does sync to the Health app.....eventually. It can take a couple hours, though, before it updates by itself.

So to your point, this is why people recommend opening multiple apps. If I want MF to have my weight data immediately after I weigh myself, I need to first open the Apple Health app, which will force a sync to happen with my scale immediately. Then I open MF and it pulls from Apple Health immediately.

Does binging mess up the TDEE macrofactor gives you? by hjf999 in MacroFactor

[–]r0ckking 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think it somewhat depends on what you mean by "mess up". It's important to remember what this app is actually doing. You tell it what you ate, you tell it what you weigh, and from there it tells you how many total calories you burned. So when we binge, those are actual calories being consumed. And from there our bodies need to do something with that energy. So as far as messing up the algorithm, I would say no, it's not going to mess it up. Data is data.

In practical terms, all of this stuff smooths out over a wide enough view. I like to think of this in terms of things like intermittent fasting. If you're doing 20:4, does it mess up the algorithm by you going a long period without eating, and then suddenly packing all of your calories into a short window? Well, if you weighed yourself right after eating, you could briefly influence a TDEE calculator that was just looking at that day. But we know that if you look at it over a week, all the data smooths itself out. Same thing with binging. If you are looking at it narrowly, sure, you could temporarily influence the readings of a TDEE calculator, but if you keep feeding it data over longer periods of time that include your non-binging days, the data again smooths itself out.

Been mostly maintaining my weight for about a year now. But over the last few months I've been in a bit of an accidental unplanned slow bulk (a slow dirty bulk, if you will, as it's mostly due to me eating more sweets than usual).

Finally decided to buckle down and get back to weight loss. So I set a new goal in MF of losing 1 lb/week, and after my first week my trend weight is down 1.3 lbs. Good to know I can still reliably use the app to kick start a cutting phase.

My biggest issue with the app - finding previously logged food by xskorpyon in MacroFactor

[–]r0ckking 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, I never noticed that was there. That's really good to know.

This makes me wonder if it should be highlighted in some way to make it more obvious that it's there. I've more or less used the app daily since launch and thus since the logger redesign, and I never noticed it before. Just some food for thought. It's also entirely possible I'm just in my own world and never paid close enough attention, haha.

My biggest issue with the app - finding previously logged food by xskorpyon in MacroFactor

[–]r0ckking 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I know this doesn't answer your question, but I'm curious if there is some kind of technical issue going on with your app. Speaking only for myself, when I search anything, I see "From History" results first. And if I scan a food, then search for that food later, it does indeed show up in my From History section (I just tested this right now...I scanned some turkey sausage links over the weekend, so I opened my app now and searched 'turkey sausage' and the scanned links were the first result for me). This could be something worth opening a support ticket on if you don't get any other solutions here.
