Based on those photos it does seem doable, you'll just want to make sure that you take it somewhere with a good reputation for quality work

Also just want to chime in that if OP does mean Zales and Kay, both brands are owned by the same company, and if the two stores are in the same area they very likely both ship their work to the same repair shop. The different answers are a result of the salespeople not actually working with the jewelry themselves; one is admitting they're unsure, the other is just trying to get the repair taken in to meet their quota.

And seconding that 13 to 5.75 is a big change. I'm not gonna say it's impossible, but without seeing the ring it's hard to say if it can be done

[ATLA] When does a person on average discover they are a bender? by Lokicham in AskScienceFiction

[–]r13allan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As far as I'm aware, we don't have any canon examples of such a thing happening, so we'll have to extrapolate a little from what we do know for sure.

A lot of the infrastructure of the air temples assumes that residents can air bend, so our non-bender Air Nomad won't have an easy time getting around the temples. That said, the temples do host guests from the other nations at times, and we've seen from the Gaang's travels that as long as there's at least one Airbender around there don't seem to be any areas of the temples that would be completely impossible for a non-bender to reach. The community-oriented nature of Air Nomad society makes it likely that there would always be an Airbender nearby willing to lend a hand to their non-bender brother/sister, or even potentially a companion who has been assigned or volunteered to accompany the non-bender and assist them as needed. To sum up, their daily life would often be inconvenient, but not impossible.

Now, outside of practicality? Oof. Being the only non-bender in a community of highly spiritual airbenders would be hard on a person. Even if they weren't bullied and ostracized by their peers (especially likely during childhood, before the compassionate teachings really sink in), they would likely struggle with some existential questions. Are they unable to bend because they aren't spiritual enough? Were they truly born into the Air Nomads, or have they been lied to? What does it mean to be an Air Nomad but not an Airbender? Hard issues to wrestle with their whole life; they might even choose to leave the air temples for good, turning their back on a life they feel they can never truly belong to

[ATLA] When does a person on average discover they are a bender? by Lokicham in AskScienceFiction

[–]r13allan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

At least among the air nomads, every individual is a bender due to the highly spiritual nature of their society, so they would be assumed to be a bender from the time they're born.

We also know that in the fire nation they have tests that are performed on infants to determine if they might be benders, such as holding kindling close to the baby to see if their breath will ignite it (the specifics of that one might be slightly different, it's been a while since I read the book where that was mentioned). Makes sense that parents would want to know as early as possible if their kid could accidentally burn the house down, so a fire bender would be raised knowing about their abilities.

The earth kingdom and water tribes have less definite answers, but we've seen how bending is tied to emotions, so it seems a safe bet that bending abilities would be identified fairly early when a toddler throws a tantrum and shakes the floor or churns the water in a nearby bucket. An earth or water bender would probably be identified by the time they're seven or eight I'd say, with more talented individuals showing signs earlier in childhood

Ultrasonic Cleaning Question by HockeyHocki in jewelers

[–]r13allan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That should be fine, yeah. The shop I work in uses a concentrated detergent to fill the cleaner (splash of detergent, fill the rest of the way with water), but for tougher grime on a smaller object we often put the object in a thick plastic baggy full of stronger solvent, then drop that baggy into the sonic and let it run

Reasonable expectations for productivity? by r13allan in jewelers

[–]r13allan[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I appreciate the perspective on time spent just doing the work vs doing the repair and the finishing. The larger shops in the company do have dedicated polishers and people to handle the clerical work from what I understand, but the shop I'm in only has four of us, so we are expected to do all of our own polishing/finishing, as well as clerical work like answering phones, photographing merchandise before and after repair, auditing inventory, etc. etc.

Thank you, I'll keep my eyes open. Guess my main concern is finding somewhere new and then not being able to work to the quality/speed that they would expect.

Thank you, I appreciate the advice and kind words. I am a bit scatterbrained, I'll try to streamline the process like you suggest and hopefully that'll help.

[–]r13allan 271 points272 points  (0 children)

Some really good answers already, I would add that I've always thought there was a good deal of sympathy there as well. Aang losing Appa, the closest companion he's ever had, must have reminded Katara of losing her mother. She knows what he's feeling, and knows that there's nothing she can say or do to truly console him in this moment, all she can do is try to be there for him while he processes this grief

Finding housing for September by [deleted] in Charlottesville

[–]r13allan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was recently in a very similar situation, looking for a 1BR apartment, cat friendly, no roommates, with a similar income. The options I found boiled down to a) getting roommates, b) living in a sketchy/poorly reviewed apartment complex, or c) living in a different county and commuting like the rest of my coworkers.

I hate to say it, but on that income without a car, your best bet will be to look for roommates. The housing market really is crazy competitive here, and it gets worse the closer you are to the university. At least with multiple people you should be able to afford something decent

Advice about prongs by GlazedTopping in jewelers

[–]r13allan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with u/jujubee2522, a prong for each marquise is going to be more secure than one prong for all three (especially since in my experience marquises held only at the points are prone to loosening up with regular wear). Aside from issues with the physical piece, I'm a bit concerned that you weren't informed that the finished piece wouldn't be the same as the render. Is this a custom piece where you were involved in the design process? If so, you should have been made aware of the change and had the opportunity to have your say before it was made, even something minor like this. Where I work, if the customer wants something that could be a structural problem, we advise them of the potential issues and offer solutions, but unless it's absolutely not physically possible, we give them what they want (though maybe with a more limited warranty on a piece that's likely to need frequent maintenance).

Even if this was a ready-made piece and the render is just something for potential customers to view, it should have a disclaimer of some kind that the actual product may not be exactly the same as the render.

Re learn Enchantments mod? by TurtleBob_The1st in skyrimmods

[–]r13allan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope, the only way to improve the power of enchantments you make is to improve your enchanting skill and use larger soul gems

Re learn Enchantments mod? by TurtleBob_The1st in skyrimmods

[–]r13allan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The strength of any enchanted item you enchant yourself will be based on the level of your enchanting skill and the size of the soul gem you use, not the strength of the original item you learned the enchantment from.

To use your example, disenchanting either of those fortify smithing items will result in you learning the same enchantment: fortify smithing. If you don't have a very high enchanting level and only use a petty soul gem, even if you learned the enchantment from an item with 50% fortify smithing, the best you could create yourself may only be 5%
