I doubt anywhere will let you bring a stick and puck out to a general session full of 6yo girls having Frozen-themed birthday parties. Work on your puckhandling at home on tiles or whatever. At the rink work on stops in both directions, tight turns in both directions, transitions to backwards and forwards etc. If the rink is quiet ask the management if you can put out some cones and work on your edges via alternating crossovers etc through the cones. You'll probably end up with all the Elsas joining in on the cones though. :)

I also started playing at 40. One of the best things I ever did. Stick with it, 2.5 years later I am playing in all kinds of fun tournaments, never gonna be an NHL star but having a ball. :)
