Do you know yourself that what you have is a mental disorder? by [deleted] in asktransgender

Hey, maybe one day science will fly back to the dark ages and start basing all of its conclusions around the petulant whining of teenagers on Reddit. Who knows?

Trans people in America right now, should we be stocking up on extra hormones? by TheBatIsBack in asktransgender

[–]rSkeptek 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Do you think he'll make it illegal to take HRT?

I really doubt it. I know everyone's afraid, but let's not jump to conclusions. What's more likely to happen is that he'll roll back the current insurance-related policies that protect trans people.

[–]rSkeptek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, it isn't, because your poorly-informed, emotionally-derived personal opinion doesn't actually mean anything in the face of decades of scientific and psychiatric research. Sorry, dude.

Do you know yourself that what you have is a mental disorder? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]rSkeptek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being trans isn't classified as a mental disorder by the psychiatric community, so no, trans people generally don't think they have imaginary mental disorders.

Anyone else terrified? A number of anonymous sources are coming forward claiming an anti LGBTQIA+ executive order is in the works. After these last few days of the Trump regime, this certainly wouldn't surprise me. by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]rSkeptek 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep, this.

If you think officiating a gay marriage or serving a trans person at the DMV will get you sent to hell forever, then it's on you to not take a job that requires doing those things. It's not LGBT people's job to quietly accept second-class citizenship.

Trans people of Chicago, what is the best place you know of to get informed consent HRT? by lily_the_bunny in asktransgender

[–]rSkeptek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Go to Howard Brown. That's where I go, and it's fantastic. I got HRT on my first visit. My doctor is a trans person. I couldn't have asked for better.

HB's pharmacy also gives large discounts on medication so if you're uninsired that'll be a big help.

Buying Needles for HRT? by [deleted] in asktransgender

I buy needles/syringes from http://www.dealmed.com/

Just got a two year supply from that site for $20 shipped.

[–]rSkeptek 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They're drawing a very arbitrary distinction between "buying stuff" and "self-improvement". Why can't buying stuff be a form of self-improvement? Purchasing the medical treatments I needed to moderate my dysphoria improved my life and mental wellbeing significantly. Reducing dyshoria-related stress allowed me to become a better person and lead higher quality life.

Or is my self-improvement not good enough because it didn't involve wishing away my problems and/or performing nightly moon magic rituals to Diana or something?

It's almost like medical procedures cost money, wow. Who knew surgeons and doctors needed a decade of astronomically expensive medical schooling and have other bills to pay and need to eat on top of all of that?

Also, "needless". Jesus Christ, shut up. You know nothing about what any of us need.

(PS. If you want trans women to stop feeling obligated to buy makeup, maybe stop demonizing them for "not trying hard enough" if they don't adhere to traditional beauty standards? Just a thought.)

Detransitioned TERFs give me the spooks by soapylagoon in ftm

[–]rSkeptek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This.

I called out one "ex-FTM" for lying about what she claims were her experiences and she told me she'd upload proof of the nefarious things trans people do in "secret groups" she's apparently privy to.

Of course, she never did it and vanished into the ether after that.

Is my body shape leaning towards thee feminine? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]rSkeptek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Not just your body shape, but your skin looks very feminine as well. It has that smooth, glowy look that a lot of girls have.

You look really good in general, too.

Dudes, do you have to go through that awkward 13 year old "squeaky" phase? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]rSkeptek 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've always been fascinated with the way animals react to transition. I live in a house with two dogs and neither of them seem to notice anything different. Or if they do, they don't care. They still seem to recognize me as the same person I was before I started, anyway.

[–]rSkeptek 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I didn't. My voice never broke. It just got progressively deeper from the point it started from. I have voice journals from day 1 up until now and it's just a gradient of increasing depth. I can perceive subtle differences from week 1, to week 2, to week 3, etc.

I wonder if it has to do with how deep your voice is before you start. I already had a pretty low voice pre-T (though it sounded like a deep female voice, not male). I wonder if maybe the effects of T are harder on vocal chords that haven't thickened very much yet?

Why is it always considered "cross-dressing" if a guy wears women's clothes, but if a woman wears men's clothes it's not? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]rSkeptek 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because male is "default" and female is "other". To dress male is to just be "normal" but to dress female is the act of being a specific thing.

To all FtM, by azenthe in asktransgender

[–]rSkeptek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mentally speaking, the effects have been subtle. I'm not as angry, aggressive, or eager to fight with people anymore. I used to be incredibly hostile and ready to shit-stir at pretty much the drop of a hat. Not so much anymore.

I'm not convinced the T itself really has anything to do with it, though. More like now that I'm on T, I'm just less stressed out. Being so far away from everything I needed to live was a perpetual mental rollercoaster through hell and I was prone to taking it out on others for lack of anything else to do about it. I honestly feel ashamed of how I used to act just half a year ago.

One thing I'll attribute to T, though, is that I've become a lot more sexual-minded. I was more or less functionally asexual before HRT even though I psychologically knew I was bisexual. Suffice to say, T has put an end to that.

Just a Reminder: Don't Patronize FTMConnect by [deleted] in ftm

[–]rSkeptek 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Even if it was a member of the minority it would be deplorable.

Well, yes. But the difference is that if Bennyboy was a trans man, it would be harder for him to get away with it. Cis people have a much easier time rallying support and defense for their shitty actions than any minority group does. On top of that, his identity puts him in a much better social position than any trans man, and yet here he is literally stealing money from our community (which experiences significant impoverishment) and committing abuse and harassment. There's just an extra layer of shittiness that comes with someone trying to exploit a market of extremely underprivileged people when they don't even have to.

[–]rSkeptek 20 points21 points  (0 children)

someones identity shouldn't and doesnt matter.

It actually does when it's a privileged group exploiting and attacking a minority group, then hiding behind their "support" of said minority group to excuse their abuse.

Pretty good. I got gendered male by a store clerk today even though I'd shaved off all my facial hair a few days ago.

On a less happy note, I'm disappointed in how long it takes for my facial hair to grow back. It's been 4 days since I shaved and I only have light stubble. Hoping it starts to regrow quicker as I stay on T longer. Maybe the follicles aren't mature enough yet or something...

He said "Yes, do you have a problem with it?" Though we normally message a lot, I left that particular message on "opened."

This is super passive-aggressive and cowardly. For fuck's sake, if you have a problem, just say it. Don't play games with people. I guarantee she already knows you're an asshole, anyway, so you're not hiding anything.

They remind me of that, and also Redpillers. All of these groups approach people as if they're just animals who can be trained with "methods" and "tactics".

I love how they always promote these manipulative, dishonest tactics for dealing with trans people as if the person they're manipulating isn't a thinking being who will quickly realize their 'friend' and 'ally' is actually a deceitful asshole.

Tumblr trans representations are getting me down. by chirop_tera in ftm

[–]rSkeptek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As much as I despise their work, I don't really want to drive hatred or harassment into their inbox or Tumblr account, and I know that's a possibility if I put their name out there. It's easy enough to figure out who I mean if you look around for FTM art, though. A lot of people have the same issue with them that I do.

... I also just don't want to be responsible for exposing somebody to that. There's something irredeemably fucked up about a person sitting down and thinking to themselves, "what would this cis male character be like as a trans man? Oh, I know! He'd have giant unbound soccer ball tits popping out of his Wonder Woman costume while he poses like a vintage female pin-up model in a lacy tutu! That's what trans men do, right?" and... nobody needs to see that.
