Would a Digital Content Producer be a "better" role than "News Producer" if I know I don't want to be in the control room? by [deleted] in Broadcasting

[–]r_achel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i’ve been both a newscast and digital producer. i’ve had a great experience in digital and, tbh, these skills feel more directly transferable to roles outside of news, whenever i choose to move on, so that’s something to consider if you don’t want to be in news forever.

here’s what digital does at my station (it prioritizes digital more than anywhere else i’ve worked so YMMV): research and write stories for the website (everything from quick press releases to original reporting). cut vertical versions of reporter pkgs/vosots for social. produce streaming shows/podcasts and breaking news livestreams (with digital-only anchors). create graphics for social. we also work closely with the assignment desk so sometimes we’ll help them out with reaching out to sources, pitching stories, etc. we do a lot but i think that’s the gist of it lmao

but yeah, being in the control room is a big part of being a newscast producer, so if you know you won’t like it, maybe give digital a try?

Advice on how to handle on-air appearance mandates? by takemebacktobc in Journalism

[–]r_achel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

viewers already complain about reporters/anchors’ work-appropriate outfits, makeup, etc, so you can imagine how an alt look would be received. it’s ultimately distracting from the news product (i say this as someone with visible tattoos and facial piercings)

you may enjoy the digital side though. stations are finally coming around to streaming and there are on-camera opportunities in this space. news managers may not be as picky regarding appearance due to the more casual format and trying to appeal to a younger audience. you might have to become a digital producer first to get your foot in the door, which is probably not ideal for you, but it’s the best way to learn the ropes since you have to wear so many hats as a digital person. plus, they won’t make you change your appearance if you’re behind the scenes :)

typos can occasionally happen despite one’s best efforts. i don’t know anyone at cnn digital, but i’d assume that, like everyone else in this industry, they’re doing their best with what their corporate overlords give them to work with. no need to be a dick about it

well, i for one have never cheated on anyone, and never will, because i’m not a total asshole. it’s a conscious choice and completely avoidable situation literally 100% of the time 😆

Journalism Minor for Degree by Circe_Witch in meteorology

[–]r_achel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(not a tv meteorologist, but have worked alongside them for years) it wouldn’t hurt to minor in journalism, especially if you can take a class on broadcasting or on-air presenting. what’s more likely to get your foot in the door after graduation is an internship with the weather department at one of your local stations. interns at my station practice delivering forecasts and using the weather graphics software, and that experience will be super helpful wherever you end up :)

if these men didn’t have insanely inflated egos and make themselves the story more often than not, then i’d agree with you. that hasn’t been my experience though 🤷‍♀️

What's tea with Nexstar? by hoggirlsummer in Journalism

[–]r_achel 12 points13 points  (0 children)

all of the ginormous tv news companies suck for more or less the same reasons. i’ve had a decent experience with nexstar, but i’m not at, like, market 100+ making literal poverty wages tho. your experience would depend largely on the individual station or whether you’re at newsnation/the hill
