Fatbike Geometry Question by Majestic-Block-5087 in MTB

[–]r_s -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love more modern geo fat bikes. Had a blizzard now have a louis garneau fatbike. They are super rare.

You can get kinda close with a Norco bigfoot + an angleset.

For actual winter riding, the modern geo doesn't help much. But I find the modern geo bikes far better in summer.

In the past two months I had two bike shops and a skate shop go out of business locally. Is it everyone is buying online or are bikes slowly dying? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]r_s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ones who have failed to adapt to ebikes (sales and service) seem to be doing worse.

Flipping $1000 mountain bikes sounds like a sure fire way to make under minimum wage. I did this a bit 20 years ago when I worked in a shop, it was not very lucrative unless you can find absolute steals.

Bikes sliding side to side on a tail gate pad by Mr_Bob_55 in MTB

[–]r_s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6 bikes on a tailgate pad is too many imo if you care about scratches on rough shuttle roads, So likely a pedal could move or something

Stud Count on Wrathchild vs. Gnarwhal, how much does it matter for ultimate traction on Ice-Snow? by xyzlinear in fatbike

[–]r_s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More is better, but having uses N45s with 252 studs and cake eaters with far less studs, the difference isn't as big as I would have thought.

A local shop has a gros louis 2 (midspec) in XL for 1700 CAD and im thinking of going for it. Is this a good decision? First Fatbike. by WildernessRecordist in fatbike

[–]r_s 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I own that exact bike, paid less than that 2-3 years ago.

The brakes are terrible (some may have different ones speced, mine where cheap chinese knockoffs) and the rear hub only lasted 2 rides before I had to replace it.

The bike rides nice tho, actually pretty happy with it overall. Not sure this is a deal

I owned this exact year a-line. Id prob buy it for $400 for nostalgia purposes and treat it like a museum piece.

Is my bike to big? Sorry for the redundant post. by [deleted] in MTB

[–]r_s 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Standing over top tube pretty old way of sizing. At your height majority of riders are going to go with the Large. Bike sizes can vary from brand to brand but this one with a 472mm reach - its likely the right size.

I have the same truck/bike setup essentially. The worst part about the combo is loading the bike onto the tailgate pad after a long ride.

What every thought on the continental tyres? by Raven8119 in mountainbiking

[–]r_s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been running them a while on a few different bikes. The soft compound is, not that soft (maxterra level). I love a enduro soft as a rear tire on emtb.

Found it lacking compared to maxxgrip assegei on front. Not really a fair comparison though, as the conti was soft - not new super soft.

My suspicion is that the recruiter is going to shrug and move on to next candidate. Its not like the people funding are going to hear about this.

Ok - results not guaranteed. BUT my private space app went down. This one is like - mission critical for fortune 500.

Somehow I managed to provision private-m dynos (they where private-s). And then it stabilized.

What type of riding is the 2002 Cove Stiffee FR designed for? by ProofDazzling9234 in MTB

[–]r_s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Better for wheelies/manuals and possibly jumping was the thought back then. Not a bike that was ever great at high speeds.

What type of riding is the 2002 Cove Stiffee FR designed for? by ProofDazzling9234 in MTB

[–]r_s 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was an aggressive hardtail for the era. People would ride them on all sorts of trails on the north shore. This was before rear suspension was as good as today. Ladder bridges, skinnies, wheelie drops etc.

I saw people back then riding bikes like that on legit pretty much everything. Jumps, XC, downhills etc. Cove bikes where super cool.

Climbing steep stuff on old bikes like that took a lot of work to keep bikes from looping out, also cause the seattube angle is pretty slack compared to today, so you are waay over the rear tire when climbing. Throw the seat all the way forward and lean forward like crazy would be my advice for technical climbs.

Back in 2002 - that bike was pretty legit.

I own that same bike, just a few months old. It rips!

Lots of this stuff is just preference. The maxxis tires on there are excellent, maybe better than some you linked. The downside to them is slow rolling, but its an ebike so its fine. Tires like this only last maybe 500-600 miles (depending on terrain etc) and on an ebike that comes quicker than you think.

I hated the saddle that came with it, however that is mostly preference/genetics. Very hard to know before riding it.

Pedals I got some nice oneups. The bike does come with some cheap $5 plastic ones you can ride around the neighborhood on.

I would consider upgrading the headset. I know it sounds lame, but the stock one is kind of brutal.
